I WILL NOT nesh out again like I did last time.

DP has even bought me an iPod Shuffle to run with so that I don't have to lug my big iPod around (oh the inconvenience).

this is what I'm talking about and here's the podcasts I run to.

I'm not starting today though, got about 3 hours sleep last night.

that's exactly what I do. I especially avoid the school mums and dads . Yes stamina my problem. Can you swim or cycle? I find I'm better suited to those.

Do you have my email policy because I had a computer death and I'm not sure I've still got yours. Would you mind emailing me your email addy and I can email you back?

BrownSuga · 09/01/2009 23:21

W1 R3 Just got back in. It's -12C plus windchill factor, brrrrrr. I've added a route with a small incline to make it a little more challenging.

Policy/fox, I know what you mean by stamina. I was doing the gym and built up running on treadmill, but it's not practical here for me to go. So took the free option. I'm determined to finish it for fitness and sanity really. Work off some steam. I'll let you know if when I complete it.

policywonk · 10/01/2009 13:10

Thanks BrownSuga. -12 I feel pretty motivated at the moment - but then it's easy to feel motivated in early January isn't it? It's mid-April that's the problem (for me at least).

Foxy - only just saw this, went to bed at 8.30 last night! Will email (pretty sure I still have it).

lexcat · 11/01/2009 17:16

Progess report.
Just been out (5th time since New year).Progess is slow and found it hellish today. Been feeling a bit rough the last few day so put off going out but was didn't want that to stop me. One good thing is my knees are not hurting as much (been problematic for years) and I can get me breath back much faster then the first run.
Though the 5km seems so far away I am feeling pleased with the very small steps I've made.
Mind the cold has been hell and I look fowards to the warm weather.
How's everyone else doing.

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 12/01/2009 13:10

Progress Report - have just done W2 Run 2. Found it much easier than Run 1. No longer freezing, but wet wet wet! Wind in my face on the outward run, and again on the return .

policywonk · 12/01/2009 22:27

Did Run 3 of Week 1 today. Not sure how the step up to Week 2 is going to go... am actually quite grateful to be running in the dark as I probably look completely ridiculous. Hopefully I'll look as though I know what I'm doing by the time the clocks go forward.

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 13/01/2009 10:04

Policywonk - I found the W2 R1 really really hard, and it made me question whether I was right to move, but then found R2 a doddle (relatively speaking). Good luck.

BrownSuga · 13/01/2009 13:16

W2 R1 last night, yes it was hard! It seemed like the 90sec run took FORever and the 2min walk whizzed by. But on the bright side it was only -5C, it felt positively warm.

policywonk · 13/01/2009 19:54

Thanks for the forewarning! I think I'll be embarking on it on Thursday.

Anyone else spend the second half of their run (still feel fraudulent using that word) readjusting the hoody that they've had to take off and tie around their waist?

giddykipper · 13/01/2009 19:55

Still haven't been out for w1 run 2 yet

DS is ill, awake half the night, I just don't have the energy to go out, I come home from work, get him to bed and want to go to bed myself.

OP posts:
BrownSuga · 14/01/2009 14:16

you'll get there giddy. keep plugging away.

Can't say I have policy. Mind you it's -23C today, so what are my chances of getting out tonight for a run . I'll just have to add more layers. And then some more.

lexcat · 14/01/2009 14:54

Feeling really positve now, like I said before the progress is very slow and still not really much on from week 1 but I'm going with what I can manage. I had one bad run followed by a hellish run (what I had managed twice before I struggled to do). All I wanted to do was give up. Felt better having posted here and managed to find the positve.
Been walking between runs and can climb the hills with out stopping for breath. Went out yesterday running (6th run) and the 1st min run was easy (that's a first). It did get harder every min run after that and the last run was tough but was on a high by then so didn't matter.
For the first time I got a real buzz from running I really hope it continues and that I'm not the only one.
Anyone had a bad day or finding it tough hope this may inspire you.

BrownSuga · 14/01/2009 15:15

well done lexcat, and up hills too!

BrownSuga · 15/01/2009 13:33

W2 R2 last night. I made the mistake of taking off my glove to get my ipod in the right spot. With windchill it was -36C! After about 30sec my fingers went numb, then very painful, so I decided to run home and call it a night. They warmed up and got the feeling back just before I got to our street, so I continued on and only missed the 5min cool down walk at the end. I think I'll have to add another one of W2 before I start on W3.

Lesson learned, get myself organised before leaving the house.

How are you all doing?

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 15/01/2009 19:04

Wow BrownSuga - you really are dedicated to this aren't it. I'll stop snivelling about -5 now!!!

Am trying out W3 R1 tomorrow, but am a leetle bit nervous - it has lots of running !

policywonk · 15/01/2009 19:31

Right, have checked BrownSuga's profile and her meteorological information makes a bit more sense now I was thinking - where is she, Scotland?

Did W2R1 today - was not as bad as I'd feared, although I do feel as though I've smoked a few filterless Gauloises now.

BrownSuga · 15/01/2009 19:34

I find that I have to really get into a routine with exercise and not let anything get in the way. The locals must think I'm crazy though. There were a couple of other hardy souls out walking their dogs though, so I didn't look like a complete idiot

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 16/01/2009 10:32

Well done PolicyWonk (and I had to do the same for BrownSuga's profile too )

Did W3 R1 today. It's 90 sec run, 90 sec brisk walk, 3 min run , 3 min walk, then start again with 90 sec run.
It wasn't as bad as I thought - the first 3 min run way okay, but the second one was a bit tough.
A few things for those of you using Robert Ullrey's podcasts for week 3:

  1. for the 5 minute warmup he doesn't do a "you're halfway through your warmup" instead you get a "you have one minute left" 2)he doesn't say 'go' anymore (except maybe for the last one), so when he says "Ready" that's your cue to run
  2. On the second 3 minute run you don't hear his voice for ages, and then when he comes on you think: yes, it's finished! but it's only to tell you you have 1 minute left. Hope that helps....
BrownSuga · 16/01/2009 21:14

Gosh odette, that sounds like proper running!

I'm admitting defeat tonight. It's -29 with windchill, and I've been freezing all day, so I'm not going out. I'll go out tomorrow instead, forecast for -17 and snow, so it'll be MUCH warmer! .

I think I'll have to do another 2 of the W2 before committing to W3. Freeze factor permitting, I'll start that next Wednesday.

backintheUK · 17/01/2009 10:11

have just done W1 R3 so come on W2 - found this week 'quite' easy so slightly nervous of next week - Sorry can I join too.....!

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 17/01/2009 18:09

well done, backintheUK - good luck with W2.

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 17/01/2009 18:09

Brownsuga - stop being a wimp!

policywonk · 17/01/2009 23:01

Did W2R2 today - was fine. Don't like the sounds of W3 though. Three minutes is quite a big step up isn't it? Well done Odette.

babyinacorner · 18/01/2009 00:00

Hi Everyone -just read the whole thread and wanted to add some words of encouragement. I did this plan before christmas (think i started in october) and now can run non stop for 45mins and I was literally struggling at week one to run for a minute. So just to say it does work and you can all do it!

CuddlysBumLooksBigInThis · 18/01/2009 00:45

Hi! I have started running recently, last oct I started the Bupa 0-5k programme as seen on 'This is the new running thread' but I lurked on there as they are really pros in disguise.
I injured myself running in the ice in Dec so had to rest until this week. I thought I had damaged my achilles but apparently I have just strained the ligament thank goodness.
I have started a bit behind where I got to before so am on Week 3 R3 W3 x4 which I did today. Oh how my chest hurt!

I thought the steps were beyond me but I managed it ok and when I stopped in Dec I was doing Week 6 R8 W2 x3 and it really was ok so I know I can cope with it really.
