Training for a half marathon-anyone else?

This weekend I'll be running 10k/6 miles. Plan is to increase by 1 mile a week.

It has been years since I ran a half marathon.

I've booked a 10K race for next Saturday but now I'm having a wobble because I think I'll only be able to do 2 runs this week. I should be doing one tonight but I'm just not in the mood and I need some time at home to get life organised. I can't move it to tomorrow because I've arranged to meet a friend so it's Saturday but I'm supposed to be doing intervals Saturday. Won't be running Sunday because I'm away for dinner and cocktails Saturday night.

Will my fitness suffer from only doing one 6K and one 8K run this week?

NoKnit · 17/10/2024 16:41

Well I've only done a 6k run yesterday since Sunday's mamouth double and probably just a slow 60mins or so tomorrow.

If you've run a half marathon on Sunday and you ached then I think 2 runs to recover this week is plenty. Personally I wouldn't do intervalls so close after but it depends on the intensity. I don't think you need to worry about fitness levels. Rest for 2 days before the race is always my moto. But 8t depends on what you want from your 10k race. To finish or a fast time? Both are in reach obviously 😀

A faster time (30 seconds-a minute faster) than the last time, same race, same route. Need to stick to a pace of 7km which is definitely doable. Even if I'm only a few seconds faster it's still great progress especially since I did it in June and I've come so far since then.

NoKnit · 17/10/2024 20:24

What do you mean by 7km pace? Or do you mean a 7minute km? I can't remember what you ran the half in now (but thought it was faster than that) or what you normally run at. Do you mean 30secs/a minute faster per km or mile? Sorry if I'm being dim.

But yes even a bit faster is progressing that is good. I personally think lots of long slow runs is what makes you faster. But obviously that is over months. For a race next week I don't think 2 runs this week, 4 runs this week or no runs this week make a difference. You've already trained yourself up for the half

7 minute km (so running each km in 7 minutes)

I finished my half in 2hrs 28 so my pace was averaging 7.09 I think.

NoKnit · 18/10/2024 12:47

Yes I worked it out afterwards sorry rubbish at maths 😅

I'm sure over a shorter distance you cab run faster, that is my experience but everyone is different.

However whatever happens just enjoy the race and how fast you are doesn't matter in the end.

FeelinTwentySixPointTwo · 19/10/2024 13:21

Of course you should be a bit faster over a 10k than over a half. Race calculators are notoriously always a bit skewed, but if you put in a 2:28 half marathon time it predicts you a 1:07 10k and a 32 min 5k, which shouldn't be too far off what you're aiming for?

Hawkerslife · 19/10/2024 17:17

Did Royal Parks Half last weekend and it was fab in terms of support.

Was supposed to be doing the Great South tomorrow but cancelled due to the weather and I'm gutted. It's my favourite race of the year. Will be going to do a 10 mile run tomorrow on my own anyway now.

NoKnit · 20/10/2024 11:57

@Pickingmyselfup how did the 10k go?

Happy Sunday Runday everyone 🏃🏼‍♀️😁

It's next Saturday but I'm feeling like I can beat my time. I have given myself a range of pace to either beat my fastest 10K or beat the time for the same race back in June.

Only did 2 runs this week, the 6K and the 8K, I still have time to do the 3rd today but I've been away overnight and feel I need to get back to sort everything out for tomorrow.

It's only 3pm. Go out and do a 5k with a few stridestowards the end, to get a third run in for the week.
Even with shower time factored in, it's less than an hour out of your day surely?!

Yes but I don't really fancy it tbh. We've sat and watched a film and now it's blowing a gale outside so I'm not in the mood for intervals.

I think a week after running a half marathon I'm allowed to be a bit lazy and only do 2 runs not 3. Back to the weights finally tomorrow 💪

Well done you guys sorry I wasn't on to wish ye good luck yesterday great times!

I watched from my hotel room window people doing a very wet and windy 10k/half/full which involved many laps of same course yesterday

Just back from 4 miles & it was ok, I think I need to have something booked in order to put in the effort

Today was my next run after this
3.9 miles in 43 mins.
I think I need to book something in to keep me consistent.

Or make an effort to go to run club or park run. Actually come to think of it, I can do parkrun this Sat

Doing parkrun this morning
Saw yesterday that two cousins and one husband signed up for a half next July so I think I'm going to tag along!

Hope your park run goes ok, I wish they weren't so early!!

I have a 17K hilly run today, just enjoying a lazy morning before I have breakfast and head out.

I've signed up to the Yorkshire Marathon next October, I feel a bit overwhelmed but I'm already capable of doing a half and I will probably have done another 2 halves plus some even longer solo runs. After my 10 mile in a couple of weeks I'm planning on going along the canal to do a very minimum of 22km but I need to pick a nice sunny day for it.

Happierwithouthim · 04/11/2024 19:17

It was their first birthday so there was lots of cake at parkrun!
I felt my Thurs run in my legs from the second I started so I just concentrated on running every step & brought my pace per mile under 11 mins Grin

Signed up a half next July with family & it's a weekend away with bf too

How's everyone finding running since the time change?
I know I'm not getting out as much but I'm busy with life too.

I've been terrible! I was on holiday last week and I was scheduled to do an interval run, a 10K and a 14K. I did my interval (covered about 6K, I did 8.5K instead of 10 and the 14 was an absolute flop. I was tired having had a late night catching up with family who I haven't seen in years.

Then this week I've been really under the weather so haven't gone out once. Tomorrow I have a 3K planned then a 16K race Sunday which I may flop at but I'm only doing it to keep a friend company so it's not a personal goal to hit.

Happierwithouthim · 02/02/2025 14:19

I'm trying to get back into running, went out today ran 1.5 miles walked 2 my body was able but my heart wasn't in it.

17 weeks to my next half marathon
This year I've run very little
12-01-25 5 miles
02-02-25 1.5 miles
16-02-25 3 miles
08-03-25 1 miles
Attempted parkrun yesterday and did one lap of three.

In December I'd a major event in my personal life and running has taken a backseat. I've kept up my weekly strength & conditioning class and have now arranged to meet a friend weekly for a walk.

I'm going to go out today and do three miles with the dog.

OP posts:
FeelinTwentySixPointTwo · 09/03/2025 16:40

How did your three miles go, OP? And are you set to start a half marathon training plan soon?

Happierwithouthim · 09/03/2025 16:46

It was tough because my new runners started cutting my ankle so a mile in I called to an old colleagues door and got plasters. It's also time of the month and three weeks since I last ran. It was mentally tough.

I downloaded a garmin plan to start tomorrow for half and it suggested week before my half as a good completion time so I'm ok with that

Good username, have you done a full or training to do one?

OP posts:
FeelinTwentySixPointTwo · 09/03/2025 17:12

I've done lots of marathons, OP. Not sure how many. And I'm pretty much always in training for the next one!

Happierwithouthim · 09/03/2025 17:35

Wow that's super, I'm a flat runner & next half has hills in it, I'm dreading that. So I joined an athletics club in August to improve my running

I'm a single parent so think that a full requires longer training times that I can fit in and I'm very slow. So I'll continue with the half's and be content with that.

I've two booked for this year, and if they go well I'll book three for next year.

OP posts:
Pickingmyselfup · 10/03/2025 17:24

I have just under 4 weeks until my next half and training has been hit and miss thanks to a niggle. I've had the all clear to carry on running so training can resume and I'll just have to run/walk this race. Not what I planned initially but life likes to throw obstacles in our way!
