Training for a half marathon-anyone else?

Happierwithouthim · 24/05/2024 21:17

This weekend I'll be running 10k/6 miles. Plan is to increase by 1 mile a week.

It has been years since I ran a half marathon.

My half also done! 2.23, I was aiming for under 2.30. It was quite hilly in some parts so I’m so pleased with myself. My first one too and I’ve caught the bug 😂

weareallqueens · 06/10/2024 17:18

@Christmaspiggyjack Was it the Great Scottish Run? It was bloody hilly.

Christmaspiggyjack · 06/10/2024 17:25

It was!!! Was that yours too? I loved it but pollock park and the long bit up dumbreck road killed me!!

Happierwithouthim · 06/10/2024 17:58

Well done you guys sorry I wasn't on to wish ye good luck yesterday great times!

I watched from my hotel room window people doing a very wet and windy 10k/half/full which involved many laps of same course yesterday

Just back from 4 miles & it was ok, I think I need to have something booked in order to put in the effort

That's some impressive times. I have a week to go and if I can finish under 3 hours I'll be happy. Going to make the next few days all about healthy eating, carbs and resting (small runs aside)

Yes, it was. The middle section was murder. The last section was mainly (vaguely) downhill but I'd lost the will to live long before. The 11 mile sign was the best because I knew at that point I'd definitely make it. Grin

Christmaspiggyjack · 06/10/2024 20:26

Totally agree! I didn’t think I’d find certain bits as hard - and was surprised at the bits I found easy such as breezing up St Vincent’s Street!

Well done you for a cracking time! What’s the chances we were doing the same race!

Im definitely doing Edinburgh next year, seeing as its flatter, to get a better time 😂

weareallqueens · 06/10/2024 21:01

I've been vaguely thinking about Edinburgh too, as all you hear is how flat it is. Grin

broccolienthusiast · 07/10/2024 06:51

I also ran Glasgow yesterday :) great route!
As for Edinburgh, I ran the full not the half a few years ago and it was the most boring route I’ve ever run 😴

Whiskeyandkittens · 08/10/2024 23:33

Well done everyone who ran this weekend! My legs have finally recovered and I've done a couple of nice easy runs (a 5 miler and a 7 miler).
I wasn't going to enter again next year but then they went and sent me a finishers discount for £10 off, and I was still buzzing.... so it's on again!

Happierwithouthim · 09/10/2024 20:04

@Whiskeyandkittens you're bitten by the bug Grin

@Whiskeyandkittens the same thing happened to me! Windsor Half Marathon 2025 here I come!

Pickingmyselfup · 10/10/2024 16:51

My race is this Sunday!!!! Got an easy 6km to do tonight then a 3 or a 5km Saturday depending if I'm doing a parkrun. I suspect not just because I don't want to have to get up early.

In the carb loading phase right now trying to get as many as I can into me which is actually surprisingly hard!

Aiming for a 2:45-3.00 finish which is realistic for my pace and the hilly route.

This will be the longest run I've ever done, I've done 16.5km on the same route and a 20km on a different flat route so I'm pretty much there but it's still nerve wracking but I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Christmaspiggyjack · 10/10/2024 18:54

Just been out for my first run since my Hm on Sunday. It was just a 5km but felt good!

I’ve also been bitten by the bug and am currently scouting for my next HM!

@Pickingmyselfup have a fantastic time this weekend and enjoy yourself!

Happierwithouthim · 10/10/2024 22:12

Best of luck picking sounds like you're well sorted for it

How did it go?

I did a double start today, 10k followed an hour later by a half marathon at the same event. I'm quite chuffed I managed to keep my pace constant and ran the last 3km of the half in a faster pace overall.

Time to lie on the sofa whilst my husband puts the roast in the oven and chops the veg. 😀

Happierwithouthim · 13/10/2024 14:25

Wow no knit that's a lot!
I climbed a local mountain today last did it 12 years ago from the other side, did it today, fell 3 times coming down, had a sopping wet arse after so I'm in the bath with Epsom salts while bf cooks dinner!

I wanted to do this & weather looked good today crisp and clear

@Pickingmyselfup how did you get on?

2.28 finish time despite wanting to die with a couple of miles to go. I was going so well but suddenly hit a wall and it was a huge struggle to keep going.

Luckily we avoided the big hill I've been going up during training which was such a relief.

I have a 10 mile planned in November but that will be a walk in the park, I did the first 10 miles of this feeling great!

Planning on easing off for a bit after that but not too much, have another half in April in London and I'm aiming for 2.25 so need to keep up the training.

Happierwithouthim · 13/10/2024 17:27

Fantastic, the ten miler will be no trouble to you now. Enjoy the elation today

Well done all! A double header is just unthinkable to me so well done to @NoKnit! I have no idea how you pull that off.

Pickingmyselfup · 14/10/2024 07:46

Ah the dreaded day after when everything hurts 😭

bally100 · 14/10/2024 14:08

Make sure you don't overlook a decent sports bra- both from support and chafing perspective- Runderwear Power bra is my absolute fav.

bigger bust sports bra from runderwear

To be honest I don't know either 🤣 I'm happy with my splits and started very defensively I finished the 10k in 54 mins and the half in 1:56. I think the key is long slow runs, I do quite a lot of them. I do at least one a week (minimum 90 minutes) Running faster in training doesn't necessarily make me faster in a race.

I don't really have aches today but I am pretty shattered and don't want to leave the sofa very much.

Yes decent sports bra essential definitely not the kit to scrimp on. I've always used shock absorber but recently got one from decathlon that was also OK and a brooks run bra.
