This weekend I'll be running 10k/6 miles. Plan is to increase by 1 mile a week.

It has been years since I ran a half marathon.

I would love to do a full, but for now I'm sticking to halves. I've got a 10k booked in August, then have two half marathons after that. I can't wait till the clocks change because I'm not really running at the moment.

@Pickingmyselfup your username is apt here! You'll just have to pick yourself up and carry on, and you'll be able to finish the half.

Happierwithouthim · 09/03/2025 17:35

Wow that's super, I'm a flat runner & next half has hills in it, I'm dreading that. So I joined an athletics club in August to improve my running

I'm a single parent so think that a full requires longer training times that I can fit in and I'm very slow. So I'll continue with the half's and be content with that.

I've two booked for this year, and if they go well I'll book three for next year.

I did a marathon and enjoyed the process, but what's put me off rushing into another is the disruption it caused to my running routines around the taper and recovery. The net outcome was similar milage to my usual HM training cycles where I need to spend less time recovering. I like doing 3 per year so I can go back to a 10k mid distance pace and pick up easily in between training phases.

Happierwithouthim · 15/03/2025 12:33

I just passed a load of runners out doing a 50k ultra,

I started garmin coaching plan this week and for benchmark run I pushed myself hard for the five minutes of running and took a minute off my average pace!

today is last run of week and I also did strength and conditioning class and going on a yoga & hike retreat with my friend tomorrow.

pick
disappointing but at least you can participate

Excellent work OP. When is your next race? I think you should concentrate on time on your feet rather than distance or pace. So run for 30 minutes, 45 minutes whatever. I don't know if it fits in with your plan but that is just my opinion, the next person will probably come and say something different.

I smashed a PB on the half marathon today, 1:44:30. Shattered now

Happierwithouthim · 16/03/2025 20:58

It’s on 5th July

I’m doing a garmin coach plan which has a finish date of week before that

Happierwithouthim · 16/03/2025 20:59

Wow noknit well done

i went to a yoga & hike retreat today with my friend, I’m exhausted but good tired

NoKnit · 17/03/2025 13:24

I trained for my first two marathons on the garmin plans but this was 20 years ago. But I think they are good.

I think 5th July is very in reach but I can't remember what you've said now have you been running regularly or not? I wouldn't worry about a plan too much just go out and run and you'll have to do your long runs on hills if it is a hilly half marathon

Happierwithouthim · 17/03/2025 17:38

I’ve not been running much for last three months due to personal reasons. Today at the walk part of the workout there was a hill so I pushed myself to run it. I’ll have to keep doing this

One more run left in second week of garmin coach plan today included intervals something I’ve never done, my aim this year is to improve my pace, I joined athletics club last august and attended weekly strength and conditioning classes over the winter season.

Intervals are great for improving pace, so is strength work.

I did a 12km run this morning, dodgy leg felt fine and I can still walk so I'm hopeful for the half 2 weeks tomorrow. I'll try push for 15km non stop and then see how I feel, can walk the rest if needs be.

Yesterday I was seriously debating taking a break after a couple of rubbish runs, it still might be necessary physically but mentally I feel much better about continuing. Maybe won't go ahead with the marathon and just stick to halves until next year.

Happierwithouthim · 23/03/2025 08:41

Week 2 of Garmin training plan. My mileage doubled. Last week 8m plus a strength & conditioning class, this week 16m plus a strength & conditioning class.

See how you go pickmyselfup
On Wed eve I’d a twinge in my calf which caused me to stop running and walk home that’s disappeared now. Yesterday a pallet fell on back on my other calf, deep bruising but didn’t affect my run today

Week 3 first run done. Stride intervals.

Week 4 done total distance 13.1 miles Grin

Half marathon complete in 2:20, 8 minutes quicker than my first one.

I feel dead.

xsquared · 06/04/2025 16:28

Well done on your race and the 8 minute pb @Pickingmyselfup .

That's a remarkable achievement!

Happierwithouthim · 15/04/2025 12:14

That’s fantastic pickingmyselfup are you ecstatic? What’s next?

Well it turns out it wasn't quite a half marathon, they had to cut it short slightly. I probably did still beat my previous time but maybe only by 30 seconds to a minute but I'll take that considering all my issues.

Next on the agenda leg depending is a flat 10K purely to get a PB, aiming for under 1:04 which I completed on a hilly course so with decent training I stand a good chance.

Then a half marathon on the hilly course I got my 10K PB on, I know this will be tough but it's not until the end of August so if my training goes well I should finish it without walking. Not aiming for a good time but I would like to finish in 2:30 or less.

After that I'm not sure, I'm almost certain I'll be doing the Alton Towers 10K, was considering a half but I don't want to be too knackered to do the rides so I booked a spa day for then so I'm not tempted to change my mind!!

Currently just in the process of recovery, trying to strengthen and fix the dodgy leg and I have hired a second coach purely for weight lifting to get me sorted in the gym. I really want to end the year super fit, strong and skinny!

Hi all. I have a half coming up in June. Not too worried about it as have done 11 miles so far which was fine and I’ve got a few 10ks booked in as a warm up.

I have decided I’m going to do a full next year. I think I’m kind of mad as it’s so far but it’s something I’d like to achieve.

good luck everyone with your training.

I'm hoping to do one next year too. It was initially supposed to be this year, booked and everything but then things went tits up so I've had to pull out.

I think if we can get comfortable doing a half then we are good to start doing the training for a full.

That’s disappointing about your full marathon.

I wouldn’t have been ready to even consider it until now but have been upping my distances for a while before signing up to anything. I only did my first organised 10k a few weeks ago and was pleased with a personal best time on a hilly mixed terrain course. Hoping to improve on that time with next weeks if my knee holds up!! 🙈

Happierwithouthim · 19/04/2025 07:32

I got a sports massage on Tues with dry needling on my calf that was twinging a few weeks ago and cupping on my back. I ran 7.5k last Sunday and nothing since. Forgot to reschedule yesterdays run in my garmin coach and seems I can’t now so going to do a 5k and add it to my garmin coach as a workout afterwards

that’s annoying when they change run distances. My first ever official 5k I was disappointed in my time until I checked my app and discovered it was actually 6k we had run!

FeelinTwentySixPointTwo · 19/04/2025 07:46

If it was an "official" 5k and a popular event it's perhaps more likely that you ran more than the described distance because you were weaving around people and not following the exact race "line" rather than it being measured too long. It would seem very unlikely for an official 5k to be almost a km over - people would be up in arms!

That said, occasionally races are measured too long or short by mistake. I've had it on a few occasions and it's invariably where they've changed the course and not measured the "new" one properly. A few major marathons have fallen foul of this over the years.

Pickingmyselfup · 19/04/2025 13:41

On my way for my weekend long run and I'm feeling very unfit. I don't really understand how my fitness levels plummet so much, I did my half 3 weeks ago tomorrow, haven't run as much as I should after because of my injury but I've done a few and been on my bike a couple of times too.

Haven't decided how far I'm going today, going to keep it steady and hope to achieve 20km or more.. potentially a bit optimistic though.

Happierwithouthim · 19/04/2025 14:10

Feeling I guess when I say official I mean organised. It’s actually a local route to me so I’ve checked it on Google maps & driven it to check!

I’m a fair weather runner and have had a busy week, not run since last Sunday. I’ll get out tomorrow and I’m off work for a week so will use that as an opportunity to get it some miles and get back into it.

My half isn't until September but I really want to finish in under 2.5 hours so I'm training already. I did a tempo run today and found it really hard - I can never figure out how fast I'm going, and my Fitbit sometimes just seems to make numbers up. My overall time was where I needed it to be, but the first bit was too fast and the middle bit was too slow.
