Training for a half marathon-anyone else?

This weekend I'll be running 10k/6 miles. Plan is to increase by 1 mile a week.

It has been years since I ran a half marathon.

Next half in seven weeks, did 6 miles weekend before last, had a tummy bug last weekend so no long run. 7 this weekend and add a mile a week will have me on track but tried this morning and hadn’t energy period due too so I did three miles and walked another one, will try again tomorrow

You've got plenty of time to build things up and even if you don't get as close as you want it's surprising how far you can get on race day.

Pre my half in April the longest run I had done was 12K yet I made it to 21.1K on race day (by the skin of my teeth!)

20 miler in 3 weeks and my longest run to date is 21.8km which was last week. Tried and failed to go further today, ended up walking loads after 16km and only got to 20.8km. I have one more long run left, not sure how I'll get on next week but what happens happens. I think I'll probably walk a good chunk of it but it's likely my last race of the year because I'm taking a break for a bit. It's an opportunity to have a couple of nights away, change of scenery and just enjoy the race, I've got nothing else to do that day so if it takes me ages it doesn't matter.

Happierwithouthim · 18/05/2025 08:28

I know, just I had hoped after the rest to have a good run not what yesterday was. I can’t go out early today so hoping it won’t be as hot as yesterday

You’ve got a great attitude to this, I know I can walk what I can’t run but I’ve done that in the past and want to run this one

Ran 7 miles last night.
Mentally struggled at 3.5 miles for about a mile and the rest went well.
delighted

Ran 8.5 miles yesterday after being sick all week 102 minutes, just glad to get it done. Really struggled on mile 4, seems to catch me every time!

9.2miles used hydration backpack with tailwind & cliff bloks.
found it very tough
I need to improve my sleep and my food and hydration during the week.

That will definitely help, I find lack of sleep a killer and then it impacts my diet too.

I'm going right back to basics with everything in an effort to build a really strong base before going back to long distance. My leg was feeling a bit niggly during my first run back after 2 weeks off but it's calmed down so fingers crossed it will behave itself!

Happierwithouthim · 10/06/2025 21:01

I’ve had two lots of dry needling on my twingy calf, need to work on strengthening that too.

sacked off athletics club training in favour of doing my normal 4 mile route with the dog, watched tv for two hours first and lost any hydration I had so stopped running at exactly 5k, back down under 11 min average pace for first time in weeks. 1 mile cool down walk.

Let me know how you get on with your training

OP posts:
Pickingmyselfup · 11/06/2025 16:56

So I did gym Monday, squats, single RDLs and other stuff and I have noticed my ankle is niggly after squats but it's only a recent change like the last 6 months if that. I've been doing weights for years in the same shoes so it's puzzling me.

I had a run yesterday, 1 minute run intervals with walking, all fine but my dodgy muscle in my calf is playing up so I tested out some hopping on my left leg and whilst it was ok during the 3 hops I did, my shin was feeling niggly right after.

Really don't know what's going on, every time I have my gait analysis done I'm not pronating in either direction massively with shoes on but I do without shoes on.

I miss having a goal to train for despite being fed up of the goal and the training!

If I can't gym and I can't run I'll just end up being a total couch potato.

Happierwithouthim · 12/06/2025 12:01

I was given exercises for calf, heel drops and standing on my tiptoes and also do plank and cross feet at ankles to stretch out the muscle too.

I’m like that have to have a race to train for because it’s too easy not to bother going if I don’t!

Three weeks out from my next half marathon, went to a concert last night and tore my calf. Will see what physio says but I doubt I’ll be able to do it Confused

OP posts:
Happierwithouthim · 21/06/2025 11:52

Physio says I can run the half marathon in thirteen weeks, only short walks on flat ground allowed right now Sad

Oh no that's rubbish! Can you get a refund/defer?

Happierwithouthim · 23/06/2025 12:29

Luckily I was able to defer, the deferal date was gone but they allowed me due to the circumstances Grin

I was doing it with family members, but I don't know if they'll sign up again for next year. Will see how they get on this year first.

Physio will allow me to run 30 secs on 30 secs off x 10 three times a week that’s 15 mins running Confused but I want to fix this once only so I’ll do what I’m told

It's rubbish isn't it.

I haven't actually been told outright to keep my runs down but I think whilst I'm still battling whatever it is it's best to build up slowly even if it means stepping back a few stages. I have nothing major to train for, as long as I can get a 10K done in an hour and a half in November then I'm happy to plod along.

Really knuckling down on the eating too so if I can lose some weight that might help too. I don't think I'm overweight but every pound helps I guess with running.

I'm not giving up, one day I want to be stood at a marathon start line, doesn't matter when or where but I have to do at least one in my lifetime.

DuckWithOneWing · 11/07/2025 18:27

I'm joining the injury club too! I've currently got a sore quad muscle after being hit by a car. My physio has cleared me to do a slow short run tomorrow, with the hope that everything is fine and I can slowly start increasing my training again. But I've got another appointment booked for next week in case the run doesn't go as well as I want it to.

Happierwithouthim · 01/08/2025 23:48

Been MIA on mumsnet for ages.
@DuckWithOneWingyikes getting hit by a car, how are you feeling now? Have you continued running?

@Pickingmyselfupbeing lighter is definitely beneficial to running.

after getting the go ahead to go back training properly about ten days ago, my hamstring on same leg felt off last Fri , went to physio on Tues eve and have got the go ahead to go back running, it’s not as bad a tear as my calf was. Started with a four mile walk yesterday with my friend. I’m on holiday this week so will be more active and do some running.

I cancelled my other half marathon just don’t need the pressure of it. There’s one at end of October if I’m doing ok by end of Sept I’ll book that. I don’t like running in the rain so we will see

Happierwithouthim · 07/08/2025 22:03

Ran 2 miles on Sun 5k Tues and today.
Muscles feel dead in my left leg after running but fine while doing it.

took the runs very very slow

DuckWithOneWing · 09/08/2025 10:16

I have started running again! I'm a bit scared because I'm signed up for a 10k in 2 weeks which feels far too soon, but it's really close to my house so I don't want to cancel. I've never done a 10k race before. I'm doing 3 races this year to raise money for the air ambulance after they saved my partner's life a few months ago.

Hope your injury is healing @Happierwithouthim! It's a shame you got a new injury straight after the previous one healed.

Welcome @DuckWithOneWing .

Go in with no expectations and just enjoy your 10K race. The upside is, whatever time you get will be your 10K pb in a race, so a new goal to aim for afterwards.

Happierwithouthim · 17/08/2025 20:58

How are the nerves now duck?

Last week on my hols I ran 5k three times
, this week I walked on greenway with athletics club for 40 mins and today I walked for an hour.
next week I’ll try go more regularly

DuckWithOneWing · 18/08/2025 18:33

I'm terrified @Happierwithouthim ! Not of the actual race - I know I can run the distance fine. But I'm scared I'll get ill or injured this week, or that my train will be late on the day or that something will go wrong in a million different ways. I have just got a new running watch (it was supposed to come 2 weeks ago, but I don't recommend buying anything from Decathlon) so that's another thing that could go wrong.

I did a long run today. I'm not sure how far it was, as I wore both my new watch and my old one and they had different distances. Somehow when it uploaded to Strava (from the old watch) that had a third different distance! But I'm feeling really positive overall able my training now. My ultimate goal is to finish my half marathon at the end of September in under 2.5 hours and after today I think that is possible.

You must be recovering if you can run 5k @Happierwithouthim so that's good progress!

Happierwithouthim · 19/08/2025 20:54

I didn’t run since though!

that’s all normal anxiety to have, hopefully all will go well you’ve the work put in. Doesn’t matter what the watches say!
