Training for a half marathon-anyone else?

This weekend I'll be running 10k/6 miles. Plan is to increase by 1 mile a week.

It has been years since I ran a half marathon.

Oh can I join? My spaniel and I are running a trail half in 11th October. I’m a returning runner - used to do a lot of half marathons before getting horrifically fat. Now I’m 8 stone lighter (with thanks to MJ and a fuck ton of hard work alongside) and I’ve been back running since Jan. I’ve never been fast - used to run half’s in about 2:30 hrs - and just aiming for a completion as there isn’t a time limit.
training going well! Just been out tonight for 4 miles. Actually pretty swift for me - averaging 10 mins 50 a mile. The spaniel likes to remind me he’s MUCH quicker 😂

Happierwithouthim · 21/08/2025 16:39

Course you can join in the more the merrier. I lost four stone with the help of ozempic and hard work, just had appointment with endocrinologist and plan is to wean off it now. I’d like to lose another half stone but I’m ok with it not happening fast. 4st took 33 months, I’m 43 in six months if I was there for then I’d be happy.

you run faster than I do!

I'm hoping to run my September half in lots that 2.5 hours and I thought that was fast!

Happierwithouthim · 21/08/2025 19:03

Well I’m only judging my races I’ve done and the athletics club I’m in I’m the slowest by far. But they’re very inclusive

I just did 5k in long leggings 23 degrees it took 38 mins I was doing it in 32.6 I think before injury. I’m a morning runner usually but tomorrow doesn’t suit.

The half I did last Sept and pulled out of for next month has a cut off of 2.5hours

I’ve just been out for four miles, really pleased at 10:29 m/mile. Felt okay too! It’s mad how fast you gotten once you starting increasing miles I find. I struggle to mentally get out sometimes - I’ve got a physical job (I’ve been combining all day today!) which coupled with early starts and stress takes its toll. But the more I run the more I value it to just take me out of all that for a while. It’s just time where I think about nothing else but breathing, footfall, the spaniel and the scenery around me. Just clear headspace and it’s so simple.
I’ve got another half booked for November at dalby forest, and I think I might book the 5 miles at Thoresby the week before the October half.
great stuff everyone!

I'm not really a fan of mornings, but I started doing an early Pilates session on Saturdays before work. I love it. It sets my day up nicely. I've recently added a morning gym session into my week as well. I'm currently on my way to the gym but it's just "light activation and mobility" today rather than a hard session.

In my last post I meant that my goal was less than 2.5 hours. I don't think there's a cut off time - I completed it last year in 3.5 hours but I walked most of the way - but they do reopen the roads after a while.

DuckWithOneWing · 24/08/2025 13:15

OMG it was amazing! My time was 1:06:16 which I'm so impressed with - my target was 64 to 66 minutes which did not feel achievable at all but I did it!

My pacing strategy was spot on and it worked. I'd set myself targets for how fast I wanted to run, and I never thought I'd do it because it seemed far too fast. Last week I did a parkrun and went too fast in the beginning and wore myself out too early so I was conscious of trying not to do that even though I kept getting overtaken!

Event review: not enough toilets, the course wasn't a consistent width which was really annoying as some bits suddenly got really narrow, and it seemed like there were too many people even though it was nowhere near the stated capacity. I got pushed over at one point. Oh and there was a gong bath at 3km which went on for about 1.5km and was awful - I got my fastest time at this point as I was trying to get away from it!

I've put running on hold until after Christmas, my niggles are still niggling and I'm not enjoying running because of it.

I hope I'll be back, mentally and physically in the near future but for now I'm focussing on strength and flexibility and getting my cardio another way. Might help for if/when I do pick up running again.

Hawkerslife · 24/08/2025 20:31

I'm joining again after a 6 mile run today and then a gym session this evening. I'm in full training mode for the Great South and also planning on a half mid November. Really looking forward to clocking those longer distances again.

Happierwithouthim · 25/08/2025 19:59

Met a member of my athletics club this morning, local shopkeeper and he said you’re not running lately. I said about calf injury and that I was only back running a few weeks and had cancelled my races. He said if I was up to 9 miles prior to injury and it’s resolved I should be able to increase mileage quickly enough now.
I needed that encouragement went out and did my fastest 5k since before injury and included the half mile uphill from my house and last half mile was against the wind.

Delighted. Will go back to athletics club tomorrow eve for interval training.

Hawkerslife welcome back

Picking hope you get those niggles sorted

Duck fantastic going

Orlando I wish I got faster as I increase mileage Confused

I was far too chuffed with myself - got up at 5.30 on a bank holiday to fit a four miles in! Did 6 on sat, felt decent. Today I got my fastest mile at 9:30 m/mile, it was all downhill though… 😂

Well done on that 5k! I had an op in June and didnt run for about 6 weeks. It was a slog starting back. Im due a bigger op in Jan and likely wont be able to run for around 8 weeks - the fear of losing my fitness is definitely real!!

I'm planning on doing an easy slow 4 miles tonight. I also managed 2 gym strength training sessions over the weekend and suffering with some DOMs today!

Happierwithouthim · 26/08/2025 17:34

I need to find a strength and conditioning class that suits me for time.
athletics clubs in interval training tonight, I’m the slowest by a long shot anyway so tonight Ill be like a snail

I did my long run today! 16km, which is the furthest I've ever run. It started to rain heavily when I was about halfway through so I went home for a coffee break and an outfit change. I don't mind running in mild rain if I have to but this was something else!

Happierwithouthim · 01/09/2025 21:32

Well done duck I’m like that too mild rain is ok but only if it starts while I’m out, I won’t head out in it.

this eve it rained on my way home, I procrastinated over my run, decided to go and could see the sky had clouded over, shower came and went and then I headed out after an hours procrastination. Did 4.15 miles in 48 mins. I’m going to add a mile a week and see how I go. There’s a 10k locally weekend after next, if I do the 5 miles next weekend I’ll book it, medal looks awesome!

I just saw an email saying they were down to last 100 places and I was meant to be doing half marathon that weekend so I signed up!

I did my long run yesterday - 7 miles. It was bloody hard, I can tell very much that it’s been a shite weekend food wise due to my daughter’s birthday. Absolutely nothing left in the tank! However my new Salomon trainers are fab and it was lovely to be out.

Happierwithouthim · 03/09/2025 13:19

New trainers always good!

I did athletics club training yesterday on a commonage behind the sand dunes. I did two laps everyone else did three. My muscles hurt where I didn’t know I had them. 3 miles compared to 4 the eve before but my whole body is feeling it!

also found a strength and conditioning class locally starting in a couple of weeks so delighted with that

OrlandointheWilderness · 03/09/2025 18:22

Another 4 miles done tonight. Feeling a bit flat today again, I normally take a revvies strip before I run but I can’t think it makes that much difference! What I think probably has is that we are transitioning to mainly trail making use of the footpaths and tracks etc rather than the lanes and that is a whole different type of running for us. Definitely find it much harder! Average pace was 11:53 min/mile. Beautiful weather apart from the last 2 miles (half the run then 😂) when it hammered it down.
also carrying a hydration pack now to get acclimatised.
pic just because!

DuckWithOneWing · 04/09/2025 09:10

Oh no @OrlandointheWilderness I can't work in miles. They seem so far!

I am being tortured by the rain at the moment. This morning I went to the gym, and it started raining as soon as I left my house to walk there. Then when I arrived it stopped!

Happierwithouthim · 04/09/2025 13:56

Rain, carrying a hydration pack and adjusting to trail running all in one go yikes Shock

OP posts:
Happierwithouthim · 04/09/2025 13:57

I can’t do kilometres any more because there’s so many of them in a half marathon but I do say to myself when running only another one, two or three 5k’s left!

OP posts:
OrlandointheWilderness · 04/09/2025 21:28

😂 @HappierwithouthimI also got cross with myself because I was slower than normal! Honestly. I’ve done a lot of trail running before but have been on the lanes with dog on the verge most of the time. Now we are 90% off-road.
I can’t face how many KMs are in a half! 😂

Happierwithouthim · 04/09/2025 21:55

Too many!!
I’m doing 5 miles on Sat morn because there’s no way I’ll manage 10k the week after otherwise

OP posts:
OrlandointheWilderness · 05/09/2025 08:48

I’ve got 5 miles to do today then 8 on Sunday. Just had my all bran in an effort to have a bit of energy 😂
