London Marathon 2024 Ballot Results

Entered the ballot for the 9th year in a row and fully expecting to be unsuccessful, but still excited to hopefully find out the results in the next week or so! It seems to be dragging, although I remember when you had to wait for the result by post in October! Anybody else excitedly/anxiously awaiting an email?

DH didn't get a place and I felt so confident he would! He'd already signed up upto do Manchester again next year, you get it cheaper for a few weeks after you've run it so worth baring in mind for next year.

StillWantingADog · 06/07/2023 22:01

Well done to all of those who got in.
i’ll keep trying every year.

No for me too.

Can anyone recommend a nice flat marathon course in the South? I did the Southampton half a couple of years ago and crossing the bridges so early on was not nice!

Not particularly south but Chester will be flat

Im still waiting for an email !

Flat marathons?

Can you cope with laps? If so then Battersea Park (annual, October).

Laps, but fewer of them and not quite as flat, Goodwood or Bedford Autodrome

Also Dorney Lake, pretty damned flat, not as many laps as Battersea

I could not think of anything worse then running a marathon distance in laps format. I would die of boredom

AuntieStella · 07/07/2023 09:25

If you want to find out which marathons are certified by UKA, then it might be worth emailing some of the larger race organisers and asking (try RunThrough - they have events across the country, including both marathons and half marathons)

Half marathon times can now only be used if you ran the Virtual London Marathon in GFA time. I think I could get the Half time (I'm only seconds outside it, and I think I could do it again and better) but didn't do the virtual. But I expect I'd find it hard to run the GFA pace outside an actual event (I do think I'm close to doing it)

My friend ran last year but didn't make the ballot this year - she's gutted. She is keeping up and doing parkruns but not as motivating as a marathon!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 07/07/2023 11:21

You can only get in on GFA on a half time if you also ran the virtual (you need to have done both).
You can get in on a half time for the championship without having run a full but it’s a pretty sharp time.

I did it during lockdown with a bunch of friends as pacemakers when everything was cancelled. It is to date my marathon pb. The most fun I have had running a marathon 😂

Another no here.

Just been comparing the cost of other various spring marathons. Not just the race, but things like accommodation and travel expenses. It was only a quick search, nothing too deep. Edinburgh seemed to be the most expensive with Boston UK the cheapest. Middle races were ones like Madrid, Geneva, Riga and Belfast.

However, I think I'm going to go to Manchester. DH will be staying at home due to DC's (we can't afford us all to go) and he would like join me when I do the European ones. Not to run, he'll be at the pub while I do the running so they will wait for another couple of years (the youngest DC is 12)

@Lastqueenofscotland2 I did Boston UK in April for my first one this year.

About 18 miles in I longed for a small incline. Something, anything 😂 however it was superbly run and it was flat enough it got me a championship entry to London.

So I'd do it again when I've got my marathon experience under my belt.

I did Boston a while back and I get what you mean. It was almost disorienting how flat it was 😂

I can’t believe I’ve got a ballot place finally after 15 years!
is there a “training” thread or anything on the site?

xsquared · 08/07/2023 08:55

Congratulations! @LoudSnoringDog and we'll done for sticking it out for so long. Have you ever done any other marathon event before?

Anyway, there will be training plans online, but there is a thread here

Not in. I'm considering doing a charity place. Just not sure I know enough people to get the required £2,500. I'm sure there must be smaller ones as well.
