Parkrunners Assemble - reviving the thread that will remind you "do not forget you barcode"

Hi everyone,
it's been a while since we've had a thread for Parkrunners to share how their run went. So if you ran today , which event were you at, how did you go and if you have the 5K app, did you get any new achievements?

I'm in Australia, so we are at the start of our summer and it was a sunny morning in the low 20s so great for a run. I was at Mosman (Sydney) with my son, it's a 3 lap, out and back course with a short steep hill at the turnaround , that seems longer and steeper each lap.
I came about half-way and the only 5K app achievement I got was for Date Bingo.

Hope everyone else had a good day too

It was trying to rain in Cambridge this morning.

Mysterian · 12/10/2024 13:22

I'm still quite new to running but I'm getting the hang of it. A new PB by over a minute 😁

Wondering what I'll need to do for the cold weather over winter. My legs never get cold but I wore gloves and a running coat for the first half. Do people wear hats and jumpers or something?

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 12/10/2024 13:28

Cold and misty and a bit damp at Pavilion gardens this morning but still lovely - highly recommend this one.

Tail walked and got position bingo too - must have. Even a day for it 👍

@Mysterian layers are the key ... a hat if especially cold. I prefer a long sleeve with thumb holes or mitts built in to gloves, and very occasionally full length legs but not often even in wintertime.

Anawi · 12/10/2024 13:39

@pputthehamsterbackinitscage Pavilion Gardens is on my list to try soon 😊

Well done on your PB 😊
I personally always get too hot to wear too much. I'm the depths of winter I wear leggings. A t shirt or vest layer and I have some long sleeved running tops from decathlon that I layer over when it's really cold. I still usually end up peeling the top layer off 🥵 I think you just have to experiment and see what is comfortable for you. I couldn't stand a hat but lots of people do.

SouthCountryGirl · 12/10/2024 14:05

I don't like hats. A buff is fine. At least if it's too hot I can then just pull it down and wear it around my neck

AuntieStella · 12/10/2024 19:52

Spot of nearby tourism for me, and added to position bingo.

In cold weather, I start by adding a buff as a headband and gloves (warm ears and hands make a huge difference to me), also arm sleeves, and move from shorts to capris. And I've been upgrading the leggings to ones with thigh pockets (so I've got somewhere I can stuff gloves/sleeves when I take them off)

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 13/10/2024 08:53

Morning all!

I tail walked at home yesterday after a long tourist streak. Was nice to catch up with friends and it was a lovely morning to be in the park. Date bingo for me, and another one towards my double-ton.

@Mysterian layers are your friend - either a top you can take off or a long sleeved top wiith a vet or teeshirt on top to keep you middle warm. A jacket if it is damp and a hat and gloves if it is frosty. And something warm and dry to put on afterwards when you are cold and sweaty!

@AuntieStella thanks for the reminder about sleeves, I forgot I had a pair - will dig them out!

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 13/10/2024 10:22

DH’s birthday yesterday so his choice and went to a flat seafront parkrun. Great running conditions and beautiful. DD got her parkrun PB, lots of people there that we knew. I felt a bit held back at the beginning as it was quite busy but my time was ok ish. Zero achievements on the app which is almost an achievement in itself.

SouthCountryGirl · 19/10/2024 14:23

And a pb for me

(But the last time I did that one, it was the second run of a new year's day double)

miked99 · 26/10/2024 00:31

I volunteered as Park Walker today, chatting to other people walking the route. It was great , talked to a few families, got to pat a few dogs and even timed it to get Stopwatch bingo.
I had an injury a couple of weeks ago and am trying not to overdo it while I recover, so I think I'll volunteer for it again next week.

I got my fastest time of the year at my home parkrun yesterday - and I stopped to take a photo. Beautiful morning.

I forgot my barcode!

And my spare barcode. Luckily I had an emergency back up barcode because I know what I'm like.
After 5 Parkruns at my local common I got adventurous and went to Reading to do the imaginatively titled Reading Parkrun. My first time doing a multi lap course. The first stretch was along the Thames through a large grass field. No real path as such so easy to keep out of people's way. Then it was basically twice round the hard paths of a mini nature reserve and back to the start across the big field again.
I was unable to run the whole way so walked a bit. A couple of minutes slower than my best but I reminded myself that I had only tested negative for my last bout of Covid 8 days previously.
The Co-op had a stall giving out apples and water bottles to everybody, which was nice.
A nice experience and I will definitely be trying some more nearby Parkruns.

You can get your barcode scanned on your phone now

My daughter and I were in Copenhagen over the weekend and we went to Amager Strandpark parkrun. It made for an early start and rapid adjustment to the metro system after a late arrival the night before but I'm so glad we bothered. A beautiful parkrun along the waterfront. We definitely didn't break any records after a large buffet breakfast (no time to get back before breakfast finished) but it was just lovely to participate. My daughters first parkrun abroad.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 09/11/2024 18:07

A course PB at my home parkrun! Last one in 2020. I am so happy.

miked99 · 09/11/2024 21:58

@SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun congratulations on the PB. 4 years is a big gap, hope you keep improving

I got a course PB today 32.46 minutes. Back in 2021 it took me a whole 10 minutes more to run that course and I am so pleased with how I've stuck with it and the time has gradually come down, as has my weight!

isthismylifenow · 16/11/2024 15:08

I had a DNF today 🙈

I usually take my ddog (we are walkers not runners) but he had been really ill with oestomylitis so he hasn't been for a while.

He came with me today and started to limp less than 1km in. I was at a point where we were able to turn around and head back to the start.

I have to commend our Marshalls who were a bit concerned as to why I was headed back with a limpy boy and came to meet us.

He got a treat, then I got some coffee and watched all the front runners coming in.

Our parkrun is on a trail so I think he isn't quite ready for the terrain as yet.

I hope he will be able to join me again in a few weeks.

It was my 30th today so I will get my challenge for the year next time.

Oh no. Hope your dog feels better soon

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 16/11/2024 17:54

Aww poor dog. Sounds like you did the right thing.

another course PB for me today. 🎉🎉

miked99 · 30/11/2024 07:55

We're currently on holiday in Cape Town, and ran at Zandvlei this morning.
It's a flat course mostly round a lagoon but is on uneven ground and this morning it was very windy, so hard going on some stretches.
Still I got a 'Z' and a World Tourist and a few other tourist related challenges so am inordinately pleased with myself.
Have a good run or volunteer everyone

@miked99 that sounds amazing. I was volunteer coordinator this week - a bit stressful but we got everyone we needed and I was able to run it. DD ran with me me which was really lovely. Last week we had a storm here and my home parkrun was cancelled but I ran in the rain nearby and got a course PB there.

SouthCountryGirl · 30/11/2024 16:55

At last I appear to be getting somewhere with my running. After 2 weeks of enforced walking at parkrun plus last week's cancellation, I finally ran and was only a few minutes off my fastest time this year. (And about 5 minutes slower on that course)
