I'm in absolutely no way qualified to start this thread but I couldn't see another one!

So after nearly 2 weeks of not running with plantar fasciitis issues, I've just done W6R1! I thought I'd go back a bit a build up gradually but it was actually ok considering I haven't run in so long. I haven't lost it completely as actually felt a bit like a runner! 🥳 We'll see how my heels are later today...

And I got back home just before the hail hit!

Hope anybody else running this morning is enjoying the crazy weather!

Hi ladies, I'm just sat out in the sun before we pack up the caravan to go home 😔
We've had a lovely weekend nice site and weather's been great. Done lots of cycling and walking but no running! Was intending to go this morning but I think my legs have probably done enough the last two days. So rest day today for me
Yes definitely a different experience running when it's warmer. Even going quite early in the morning uou can still feel the difference. I never normally take water with me but now I'm wondering about a camelbak or similar. Thinking it would be handy for walking/ cycling and maybe even horse riding too. Anyone got any recommendations?

randomsabreuse · 31/05/2021 21:49

The Decathlon own brand running bag has a camelback with it. I've never used it but the bag is great - gets way more stuff in than you'd think. You can also get soft flasks for it.

I tried to go for a run today but it was just too hot. My plan was 3 x 18 minutes, but I found I just couldn’t run up the hills in the heat and stopped about halfway to rest and drink some water before running home. I don’t think I’m going to make much progress while it’s still hot as I’m not good with hot weather at the best of times

EmilyDickinson · 02/06/2021 17:22
  • before walking home I mean
purplesequins · 02/06/2021 18:40

it's not the heat I find difficult but the sudden change in weather.

anyway, I had my covid jab on sunday and feel very tired still.
I hope to be back out at the weekend.

emilyjeff · 02/06/2021 18:53

Was thinking how quiet it was on here and that it must be the heat putting everyone off running!
I didn't go this morning as had to drop DH at work at 8am and already felt quite warm when I got home. My weather app reckons rain at 9pm tonight so I may well head out for a run then! I also have my new camelbak to try out 🙂

GoingGently · 02/06/2021 21:12

Just did my first run in weeks! Went back and did R4W3. Feel better for it...just need to get some consistency going!

Cavagirl · 02/06/2021 21:36

I know! I'm considering braving it early doors tomorrow morning but I know it will take a herculean effort to not roll over for an extra 45 minutes in bed!!

emilyjeff · 02/06/2021 21:37

Well I've been! Did intervals as per my garmin plan. It was hard work mainly because I had curry and chips for dinner at about 7pm, did think I might be sick at one point but powered through!
Felt good to be back out, sadly no rain but didn't feel too hot. Think I'll stick to early morning runs in future though, or leave longer between dinner and running.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 02/06/2021 22:09

I managed to drag myself out of bed this morning to do W4R2. I was a beautiful morning, not too hot, but the session felt quite hard. I was quite puffed, but not enough to make me need to stop. It was my legs which found it hard going - I wasn't sure if I'd be able to keep them moving for the whole of each run. I did manage it, mainly by using a tip I read somewhere last week, which suggested aiming to just reach the next lamppost/tree/other landmark, and then once you reach that aim to reach the next one. I found it did help, I wasn't wondering how much longer was left, or checking my watch, I was just concentrating on "get to that car, get to that lamppost, get to that tree" and when I reached whatever it was, I felt pleased to have succeeded and aimed for the next thing.

I'm a bit behind at the moment so week 6 run1 - this is the week with 3 x 25 minute runs. I get a bit nervous about it because 12.5 minutes takes me what seems a long way from home and I struggle believe it is possible for me to run that far, though I can, although totally knackered on the return which is all up hill until very near end. It was so lovely out at 5am today, lots of birdsong, very cool. On Sunday I will drive down to the next village where it is flatter for my run, just so I don't have to obsess about the bloody hill.

randomsabreuse · 04/06/2021 15:34

I'm ok running 10 miles and I still try to game the hill that leads back to my house on every run! I've added in random loops and turned back to run the last minute or two away from home to avoid that hill at anything other than a warm up/cool down or possibly an easy pace! I think everyone has a nemesis hill!

Garmin dictated a short tempo run yesterday. Wasn't feeling the love but careful route choice (canal tow path) got me through at the required pace. Week and a half to my half marathon so cutting back mileage for the "taper" period.

Really enjoyed the running club track session which was 200m run (10k pace), 200m walk. Did 15 repeats and felt like I could have done more. Running on a track is a total luxury, it's nice and springy, soft enough not to be jarring but takes less energy to go fast! It's the main reason I joined the slightly less local running club - access to a better track!

purplesequins · 04/06/2021 16:21

hills are my nemesis as well.
most of my routes are very flat, but the most interesting ones require some serious legs and lungs.

I'm still not quitd there after my jab, still feel exhausted. going for walk and cycles until I'm better.

purplesequins · 04/06/2021 16:24

random I wish 'my' hill would have a running track surface! I love at track but it gets so boring if not doing some interval work.

constance go for it. you can absolutely do it. good luck!

emilyjeff · 04/06/2021 17:39

Did my 20 min easy run this morning. Took the camelbak out with me just to give it a try and it was pretty good. I got one with a 1.5l reservoir so not too big and bulky. Started off at way too fast pace and the water was sloshing around quite a lot but when I got into my rhythm of easy pace it wasn't too bad at all.

emilyjeff · 04/06/2021 17:41

Just looking at my next planned session expecting a long run on Sunday. Instead it has time trial- 1 mile at race pace so should be interesting 🤔

EmilyDickinson · 05/06/2021 15:32

After having to abandon my planned run halfway through due to the heat I was pleased to tick off that run today. This time I chose a flatter, more shady route on a cooler day and although it was still warm and I was breathing hard I got through the 3 x 18 minutes. It was hard to motivate myself for this run having “failed” at the last attempt but I feel better now I’m back on track

emilyjeff · 06/06/2021 08:38

Well done @EmilyDickinson the heat makes so much difference doesnt it.
I've been out to do my mile time trial. Left home about 7.30am and it felt quite cool until I started running! Completed it anyway, and got a new garmin record for fastest mile 🙂 Not sure if I ran too fast tho- dont think I'd be able to keep up that pace for 3 miles/ 5k but my watch didn't give me any pace guidance so I just went for it

EmilyDickinson · 06/06/2021 11:43

Heat and hills are tough emilyjeff. Now that I have few runs under my belt I’m noticing the difference they make. Well done with your fastest mile. It’s so nice when you have an achievement like that. I’m a big fan of Strava now, all their little medals are very motivating. A bit like the well done stickers they give out in primary school

EmilyDickinson · 06/06/2021 11:47

Also kudos for getting out for a run at 7.30am! I’m never able to get going that early. I do so much faffing about before going running: sunscreen, key, mask in case I stop on the way back, setting up podcasts, setting up Strava, stretching etc

emilyjeff · 06/06/2021 12:23

@EmilyDickinson I wouldn't normally be out so early on a Sunday but DH got up for work at 6.30am so thought I may aswell get my run done early

Cavagirl · 06/06/2021 13:00

Well done emilyjeff for your fastest mile!!!

I went out today - first time in a week 😬 it's been too hot - it started to rain after the first km and stayed lightly raining for the whole of the rest of the run - perfect! Never thought I'd be saying that! And yet I'm still a giant beetroot by the time I get home.... sigh

EmilyDickinson · 06/06/2021 14:37

Did you see the photo of Michael Gove running recently? At least none of us have the press taking photos of us as we run. I’m in blissful ignorance of what I look like running and I’ll try and keep it that way for as long as possible. I’m sure it’s not pretty!

TwoLeftElbows · 07/06/2021 23:01

Hi, can I join? I was on the thread last year (different user name) but got ill and never quite managed to graduate. This time round I've just finished W4, but I know it's about to get a whole lot tougher and being v overweight only makes it harder.

Still, even though I didn't graduate, and I'm still soooo much a beginner still, I know the pre-running me would be proud for completing week 4! Baby steps.

purplesequins · 08/06/2021 06:17

welcome elbows and well done for completing week 4!
you've done the hardest part with starting and sticking to it until now.
