I'm in absolutely no way qualified to start this thread but I couldn't see another one!

So after nearly 2 weeks of not running with plantar fasciitis issues, I've just done W6R1! I thought I'd go back a bit a build up gradually but it was actually ok considering I haven't run in so long. I haven't lost it completely as actually felt a bit like a runner! 🥳 We'll see how my heels are later today...

And I got back home just before the hail hit!

Hope anybody else running this morning is enjoying the crazy weather!

Hi! Been meaning to look for a thread for this.

Non- exerciser here, and I've just done W5R1. Made the mistake of checking out the rest of the week though 😁😱

At the minute I don't know if I'm at the stage that I get endorphins, or if I'm just happy to not have a toddler with me for 30 mins.

Talksunderwater · 16/05/2021 15:06

Welcome to all the newbies.
I have been AWOL from the is thread for a couple of weeks because I had a sore knee and was struggling to run more than 1km. However, I’ve managed to rest it and have been back out running my usual 5km route since Wed. Today I was thrilled to average under 7min per km (which I just couldn’t seem to do). Am not going to win any prizes at that pace, but am really pleased Grin I’d love one day to be able to run 5km in 30mins…

redcandlelight · 16/05/2021 15:16

welcome jockey
honestly, week 5 is not as bad as it looks. trust us graduates :o the programme is so graduated that most people can manage it.
and if you don't there is no shame in repeating a run.

back from a slow 6k.
tough run for me. maybe because I got too hot. I took my fleece as it's 11 degrees here. but the sun feels quite warm.

redcandlelight · 16/05/2021 15:19

nice to see you again talks.
I haven't cracked the 6min/k yet either. but as long as I get out there and keep running I'm happy with that atm.

LatinforTelly · 16/05/2021 15:49

Thanks for the sock recommendations, @emilyjeff, I will invest in a pair. Had a very sluggish 22 min run today because I had to rush to my jab appointment. Expecting to feel a bit rubbish in the next few days so might have a break if so.

BIWI, I feel similar to you. There's not much about the actual run that I enjoy, but I like feeling fitter generally when I'm not running!

BIWI · 16/05/2021 16:56

Session with PT yesterday wasn't as bad as I feared - can still plank for 1.5 minutes! But I'm really feeling it today - stiff in all sorts of places.

No run today but will go out tomorrow for another 30 minutes.

EmilyDickinson · 16/05/2021 17:31

Well done everyone. I waited around for a break in the rain, realised that wasn’t going to happen and went running in the rain! You get extra points for that, yes? I feel like I’m getting better but my current favourite run has a very long hill on the first leg which is really hard work. I do run up it but so slowly I’m barely moving!

RomanMum · 16/05/2021 22:56

@Cavagirl thanks! Mainly psychological I think. Got a set route and I know roughly what is 5 mins, 8 mins etc. so must try to go further next time...

BIWI · 17/05/2021 08:51

Definitely extra points for running in the rain @EmilyDickinson! I don't mind the running in the rain (as long as it's not too heavy) but it's the warm-up walk first that makes it harder,

redcandlelight · 17/05/2021 09:20

rain is a good thing.
I discovered that running just after or just before rain leaves you with extra protein due to the insects. some don't taste nice at all Envy Grin

ExConstance · 17/05/2021 09:24

Everyone was right about week 5 run 3. I decided to just get out of bed and go on Sunday, before I had time to think about it and before the rain had a chance to get started. It was fine. My regular route is downhill out and uphill, with one significant incline, on the way back. I've grown to quite like that little hill as i feel so good when I get to the top. I arrived home before DH had had breakfast, dripping sweat and very red indeed, yes, as everyone has said I felt very good indeed.

BIWI · 17/05/2021 09:36

But no carbs in insects @redcandlelight Grin

randomsabreuse · 17/05/2021 09:42

I'd have liked some rain yesterday - it was about 18 degrees where I live (just outside Glasgow) and I was baking/dripping on my run!

I managed to avert a near disaster as when I got my sports bra off the drying rack I found that one of the strap hook thingies was hanging on by about half its stitching, so I was very lucky it didn't fail mid run - would have been a very uncomfortable walk home with one strap on a non-wired sports bra. Will be inspecting them all regularly from now on!

LatinforTelly · 17/05/2021 10:04

Well done, ExConstance I found that run the biggest psychological step of the programme!

ExConstance · 18/05/2021 09:29

thank you, Latin, no rain here this morning so Week 6 run one, which was a bit of light relief after w5 run 3. The pace will heat up again though before the end of the week.

teaandbiscuitsforme · 18/05/2021 09:58

I haven't kept up with this thread at all - hope you're all ok!

My new Brooks arrived yesterday so I've just tried a run. I decided to stick with week 6 for now because I really need to find a way to run with PF which doesn't leave me in so much pain so I'm going to take it slow and just try to get out regularly. I've even decided to turn off Strava because I actually don't care how far or how fast at the moment! Keeping my fingers crossed that the new trainers make all the difference!

redcandlelight · 19/05/2021 16:18

hello all
back from a 5k midweek run. I was unexpectedly fast with 6.03/k but it was a very flat route.

redcandlelight · 19/05/2021 16:18

tea I hope your feet like your new shoes.

emilyjeff · 19/05/2021 17:23

Evening ladies, not been on for a few days
Did a 'steady state run' yesterday, only 10 mins of actual running but was supposed to keep the pace between 6.00 m/km and 6.13 m/km It was so hard! Watch kept buzzing too fast! Then too slow! Then too fast! So didn't really enjoy much tbh.
Planning to run before work tomorrow, think plan says 20 min easy pace so I'll just do one of my usual routes round here.
Agree the weather has been very changeable sunny one minute then heavy rain the next. Even had hail stones this afternoon

randomsabreuse · 19/05/2021 18:56

I ran twice yesterday. Not planned as I ran first thing then a friend messaged me and we did a late evening 5k which was fun. Going to take a couple of days off as had my Covid jab today.

@emilyjeff it's a pain on the small target windows, especially if GPS is a bit spotty! I always overcompensate for what it's saying too. I've got to know most of my usual routes' GPS vagaries.

It is handy learning different paces though...

When I was dealing with PF the main thing was only to run on the flat, minimise even walking up hills and really stay on top of calf stretches. I also got told to put heat gel on my calves before running so they were warm at the start and had to switch back to high drop shoes.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 19/05/2021 22:40

Hi all. I did w3r3 in the rain this morning. I did run 2 last Wednesday, and it resulted in the niggle /slight soreness in my ankle/heel that started after w3r1 coming back, so I decided to give it several days of not running. I've been stretching and attempting strengthening along with elevating when I can and some icing.

It's been feeling very nearly normal for a couple of days so decided to try run 3. I was slightly aware of my ankle during the running bits (hard to describe but some v slight soreness as if a bit bruised) but it felt fine during walking and still feels OK now. It definitely felt worse this time last Wednesday (and worse again Thursday) so keeping fingers crossed it will be OK tomorrow and I've rested it enough this last week. The run felt pretty good despite the rain and I was pleased I was still able to run the 3 mins non stop after the break.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 19/05/2021 22:42

tea hope your new shoes help you find a way to run with less pain.

EmilyDickinson · 20/05/2021 11:06

Sounds like you’re doing all the right things Richard well done. I sometimes find it hard to get the right balance between running regularly but not overdoing it and resting an injury but not using the odd twinge as an excuse not to run when motivation is lacking.

I have a couple of aching bits following a fall but neither are my legs (!) so I started the third week of the 10K training. It’s 3 x 17 minute runs with the usual warm up and cool down and 1 minute walking in between. I did make it easy for myself by running on a flat sandy running track and was pleased that my run had more of a steady rhythm and my breathing was quite easy till the last 17 minute run. I can see I’m making progress. I started C25k at the start of this year and can see how far I’ve come. I don’t run fast but I’m definitely fitter.

Is anyone else planning to go to Park Run when/if it restarts? I really hope they’re able to go ahead with it, it was a huge motivator for me pre pandemic.

emilyjeff · 20/05/2021 20:54

Hi didn't do my run this morning, got up late and didn't leave myself enough time so decided to leave it til tomorrow
@randomsabreuse yes I did wonder if poor GPS signal wasn't helping some of it was under trees which may have affected it. Think I'll try a flatter route with no trees next time, hopefully I'll get better at it!
@Emily I am planning on going to parkrun when it starts again. My two closest runs are not that great but I used to enjoy doing a bit of parkrun tourism when we're away for the weekend in the caravan.

redcandlelight · 20/05/2021 21:04

parkruns here will only start from september. but I'm ot keen.
I like running on my own.
plus my nearest park run is at 8am. I'm not getting up that early on a weekend!
