12 miles. 🙌🏻

My furthest ever. All the way I was thinking "I'll do an extra km to make it 20, no point stopping at 19" but was literally looking at my strava at the end to be able to stop as soon as I hit the 12 mile mark. I was only 3 minutes walk from home so that was OK. But yes, last 5 km was hard, no doubt about it.

So that's 5 weeks of the 16 week plan for marathon training done, with extra as I have done more runs than it suggests. But not sure I'll keep it up as the next long run is 15 miles and that seems unimaginable 🤯

Well done @Iamblossom! I bet you could do 15, but if you like you could just aim for 14 & see how that goes?

Well done lamblosson, I am sure you will breeze the 15 miles.

A short run yesterday and a hilly 9 miles today. Slightly hurt my ankle running yesterday, but am ignoring the swelling this evening hoping it will disappear!

Had a lovely run in the sunshine this morning Smile

An hour easy run then 10 minutes a bit faster and then 5 minutes faster still. Quite a bit was along by the river which was lovely.

Well done @Iamblossom. You can get to 15miles just go slower if necessary.

10 miles of trails in the sun. Lovely.

The last 5km is always hard when you’re upping distance. It’s annoying as you get through the ‘I feel amazing and this feels quite easy’ stage and then the final 5km hits you in the face.

You’ll be fine, that starts to get to the thinking about liquid and when to snack stage. Remember if you hit a high 2/3 to 3/4 the way round, stop and fuel before you crash.

Purpleraindeer · 19/04/2021 07:04

One long super hilly run and one short hilly run from me. We’re away for a few days and it has been amazing to be somewhere new!

I second the comment re snacks for long runs - I find I feel a bit spaced out and sleepy if I need to eat. That normally means I’ve left it too long.

Weather has been lovely here and I ran out of water yesterday. Need to get into the habit of taking a bit more with me I think

Hello, can I join you?

I usually do around 50 miles per month, I'm not training for anything - at the moment I'm just feeling happy that I've made it through the slog of winter road running and can get back out on some decent trail runs Grin

Iamblossom · 19/04/2021 07:51

Great advice thankyou.

Not sure i can go much slower, my average pace over the 15 miles was 6.11 minutes per km! Obviously I did start out faster and then slow down, maybe I should start really slow and see if that leaves me reserves for the final push?

And yes @amaura that was exactly how it felt.... 😊

I didn't have jelly babies so took American hard gums and ate two of them at 10km, WRONG choice of sweet, impossible to chew especially when you are trying to breathe!! 🤣. Got home and DH pointed the box full of gels he has for cycling, will take one of those next time.

emummy · 19/04/2021 12:00

Welcome @beela, the more the merrier! If you want to you can add your miles to the number in bold at the bottom of posts, it's the total all of us have run together for the month.

@Iamblossom the advice I was given for very long runs was to start slow and then taper off! I used to set my watch to buzz at me if I went too fast, this is no longer an issue though!

Start slow and get slower? This I can do.... Smile

Doublethecuddles · 19/04/2021 13:10

Lovely double run this morning with 2 groups of friends. Going to have to force myself to rest for a couple of days as my ankle resembles a golf ball. It’s not sore, more itchy where the skin is stretched.

I always runner faster in the middle then peter out by the end.

Your ankle definitely sounds like it needs a wee rest @Doublethecuddles. Hope it settles down soon.
Nice brisk run in the rain this morning with a detour to the shops for bananas!

The usual 3.5 trot along the seafront early this morning - there were people paddle boarding already!

Ooo, I fancy a banana now, @emummy with my breakfast!

Had a gorgeous long run on Friday, saw kites, buzzards, waterfowl, goldfinches and lots of pheasants. Took a hilly route and added 500m to my club challenge (still just hanging on in the top 10), running up and walking down to protect my knees.

Yesterday I finally worked out that my kneeling chair, while good for my hip flexors, was putting additional stress on my knees and causing some of the niggles I have had recently - I moved to standing or a different chair most of yesterday which seems to be helping. Looking forward to an evening trail run with the running club this evening.

Had a lovely run along into town and back by the river. I am properly slow but it means I can keep going and when I was running more quickly by my own standards a few months ago I ended up with shin splints.

On my half marathon training plan I’m meant to do between 7:21 and 7:58 for an easy run - I did end up about 6:45 today but it all felt fine so I think it’s all right.

Omg I have the worst DOMS from Sunday’s run. I presume it was the combo of steep ups and downs which has hammered my quads. Shuffled round my easy run today but the stairs are still causing me a challenge. Any tips to get rid of doms would be gratefully received!

Do a yoga session and wait 12 hrs for it to pass.

I’m taking an extra recovery day off running (heads not in the today). Did my workout though and will do rolling and stretching

Iamblossom · 21/04/2021 07:49

@mirandawest are those times per mile or per km?

UnaOfStormhold · 21/04/2021 08:23

Purpleraindeer, stretching and a massage roller can really help smooth out the knots - and it's generally pretty short lived so hang on in there and make a resolution to do a bit more post run prevention; cool down, stretching, protein and hydration do make a difference.

Lovely club run last night, discovered some new trails including a gorgeous bluebell wood. Knees still a little grumbly but they're so much better having ditched the kneeling chair, which gives me hope that stopping using it for a while will make them even better.

@Iamblossom per km - doubt I’ve ever done that sort of pace for a mile! Grin

Had another run this morning - did 45 min at just over 6:30/km. Went round the lake at the nearby university which was nice.

Not so nice is my t shirt rubbing against my inner arm. Think it’s a combination of sweat and maybe my arms have got a bit fatter Blush

Nice dog jog this morning.

IRun4Me · 21/04/2021 12:30

A couple of runs to add. Still plodding along - literally. Feeling very heavy legged. Even the dog was halfhearted about it all yesterday, until he realised I was taking him off road, then he perked up no end.

Thanks for the DOMS tips. I am still sore 3 days later and am struggling on the stairs Blush. Apparently lots of people have done what I did - got excited as lockdown released, rushed to the mountains to run despite not being used to it and then broke themselves!

Toughed it out on some intervals today. Kill or cure. Grin

Sorry to hear you’re dragging @IRun4Me
