Hi all!
Was offline last week in the run up to race to the stones. Did the weekender - 50k on sat then 50k on sun. I don’t know why but I had given no thought to how running 2 big days consecutively would feel. Tiring it turns out!
Somehow hurt my ankle during the race but didn’t notice at the time so taking it super easy this week. Lots of swimming and some yoga. Might try a very short run tomorrow.

Have read back - glad to see you’re all well Smile

Wow @Purpleraindeer, well done! Definitely take it easy, hope the ankle recovers quickly.
Gorgeous run through Border hills this morning, no other humans around, and beautiful sunshine. Same elevation over 10 miles as my 50k will have so quite tough but really enjoyed it.

Hello everyone! Training for a marathon here.

I've always tried to run without water just as I don't like holding stuff, and I tried one of those hydration vests and HATED IT. What do you do water/drinks wise on your long runs? Do you have a belt or something? x

emummy · 15/07/2021 11:01

I’ve just bought a hydration vest for the first time; up till now I have used a belt. I have one from Innov8, which I fit 2 soft flasks in and it has room for phones and anything else. I never carry anything in my hand

OP posts:
ToastandPeanutButter · 15/07/2021 11:09

Oh that's interesting, thanks @emummy. The one I have has a straw etc. So I'll have a look at the ones that hold the soft flasks!

randomsabreuse · 15/07/2021 11:53

I hate camelbak/water pouches - more for how you drink out of them. I do have a hydration vest and put a "normal" bottle in the main compartment. Issue is the sloshing noise if it's half full!

I have a belt with holsters for bottles. They're ok but again sloshing sound plus if they leak (mine did) you get a wet arse. Better for accessing water on the run though - more useful for faster paced runs as I just walk to sort water on a steady run.

Biking0077 · 15/07/2021 13:25

Wow @Purpleraindeer that’s an epic run hope you recover well.
Lovely pictures @emummy looks a hell of a lot quieter than my neck of the woods at the moment. Think the country has descended on Devon & Cornwall in last few weeks! I can still nip out early to find quieter places but it’s been harder lately.

I usually run with a belt that holds one 500ml bottle which is normally enough as I reduce my running a lot in summer. But I’ve just bought a vest that holds two 500ml soft flasks from harrierrunfree.co.uk/ as I e got big boobs I wanted one that would fit women Grin I’ve not ran with it yet but tried it out round the house and it feels ok. Snug round chest as opposed to barely fitting/straining over boobs.. so hoping it will be ok. DH advised me to try soft flasks as you don’t get the sloshing when they are half empty. He does long trails too.

emummy · 17/07/2021 06:52

Last run at holiday cottage - although thankfully still have another week off at home. Wee set of hill reps on the rather steep little hill just down the road, very grateful for shade from the beautiful trees lining it!
Agree about the annoying sloshing with hydration vest; mine has 2 soft flasks which are much better. And elastic across the chest rather than straps so really comfy and easily adjustable.

Lovely puppy and run pictures! I find I don't get much sloshing with my hydration pack as long as I make sure I get all the water out first. I have some very convenient decathlon trail shorts that have a pocket that takes a 500ml soft bottle as well as 4 others for phone, keys and snacks - perfect for runs when I don't want to get the hydration pack out. I can't stand belts (tend to upset my stomach) but this works well for me.

I'm making progress with the club 5k plan - getting a little faster despite heat and the tiredness from all the training.

I've been listening to lots of podcasts on my runs and recently found the RunSmarter podcast which seems quite promising as a resource for avoiding injury and training more effectively. Particularly useful in explaining how, after a run that puts too much strain on your body, the maximum load your body can take is reduced, so just going back to what you were safely doing before can make you worse.

Sadly my phone had to be sent off to repair after my wet run a few weeks ago so fingers crossed I'll get it back soon...

Decathlon trail shorts

randomsabreuse · 17/07/2021 10:23

I don't do trail in shorts because I have a bit of a tendency to do trails that get narrow and nettly so prefer to trade coolness for leg protection.

Did an early morning 5k around local streets which was surprisingly hot for the time of day. Back to feeling normal post 2nd jab except I can't sleep on my left side because of sore arm. Need DH to pin down his weekend rota then will start a 10k plan leading to an actual race, probably...

9 miles across two runs to add. 6 this morning, God I run soo much faster without my friend and with no dogs

Purpleraindeer · 18/07/2021 09:07

Apols if you all know this already, but you can stop sloshing with soft flasks if you push all the air out before putting the top on. Same for bladders - turn them upside down and suck the air out. That was a total revelation to me. I have a harrier vest and also a Salomon one. Salomon is better in the warm weather as it is basically stretchy fabric.

Tried my short run. Still felt quite tired but worse - my foot really hurt for the whole day afterwards. So back to swimming and yoga again for a few days.

Spudlet · 18/07/2021 11:45

I am a new convert to M&S Goodmove shorts - really comfy, big pocket, don’t move. And not too expensive either. I had a Decathlon pair but was pretty horrified to get back from my first run in them to see that I looked as though I’d wet myself (they were black, but the sweat just didn’t wick) and that they were transparent! But to be fair to Decathlon, they did give me a full refund so that was good.

24 miles to add for me this week - one 4 miler with a friend around the woods, a 6 miler late on Thursday, and 14 this morning. I set off at 6.40am (Shock), but the trails were awful, I had a new route planned and the farmer had basically deliberately left the footpaths blocked, ploughed up and planted over, markers removed, bridges over ditches gone, electric fencing, the lot. (I was definitely in the right place too). So I was defeated and ended up doing loads on the road in my lovely trail shoes 😫 because I just could not get through. Going to need to rethink next week as I need a 15 mile route and I clearly can’t go from home, which is so annoying. I don’t mind a bit of overgrowth, but these paths had been deliberately obstructed and it made me really cross.

Tried to run trail with dog early this morning but flipping heck it was 20c+ at 7am then my knee/IT band started niggling 1m in so had to walk the rest of it. So frustrating as I’ve rested/ swam/ strength trained/ yoga this week but it obviously wasn’t enough. My DH is now self isolating as his whole company got pinged Saturday so I’ve got to do all the dog walking & kids taxi duties this week too. I’m relieved his PCR test is negative & my LF was too, but we watch & wait now. He’s normally out running 4-5d a week as training for a trail ultra in Sept so hoping he doesn’t get too miserable / frustrated as the week goes on. I Think the turbo trainer in the shed will be put back into use again to keep his sanity!

Sounds really frustrating @Spudlet can you anom report to local rights of way officer to take a look?

Spudlet · 18/07/2021 16:47

It really was @Biking0077 - mind you, yours sounds it too! I did take a photo of the worst obstruction (a massive pile of junk 12 feet high, with an electric fence) so I will report it - goodness knows if it will do much good but I feel I ought to really.

Doublethecuddles · 18/07/2021 20:27

A 10 mile run this morning before it got too hot. Think I am going to invest I a hydration vest as I get very thirsty.
Some great running everyone this week. emummy holiday runs looked lovely.

emummy · 20/07/2021 10:16

That's so frustrating, finding routes blocked like that.
Forest run for me this morning, quite overgrown on some of the paths but that's just standard for summer. Got stung by something and have a rash on my legs, maybe from the bushes. Nice run though! Cooler here today, just 16, which helped.

Oh spudlet that is annoying.
Hope your DH doesn’t get too frustrated binking. I had to self isolate a couple of times and really missed being able to go out.

A couple of runs to add. Busy end of term and then camping. Was going to go running but did lots of walking and swimming in the sea instead. Also got a massive bite on my foot which made it hard to bend my foot up. It’s gone down now, just very itchy.
Managed to get out earlyish this morning and it was still warm but so lovely.

That bite sounds nasty @IRun4Me, glad it’s getting better.
Sticky interval session this morning, really pleased with pace, absolutely horribly drenched in sweat after - 95% humidity! Thank god for cold showers.

A lovely 6 mile beach run this morning.

Am struggling to get out DC with DC on holiday.

@IRun4Me pleased your bite is getting better.

Glad you made it out @Doublethecuddles, it is a challenge with the children around! Mine are older now so it’s got a lot easier.
Sticky run for me yesterday evening but really enjoyed it, lovely sunset.

Forced myself out this evening after a distinct lack of motivation this week. Covid jab last week plus the weather plus my planned half being postponed meant I was VERY unmotivated to say the least. Did the Garmin "benchmark run" then 2 days later, race postponed. My only other planned race this year is dependent on all restrictions being gone by Aug 9th (Scotland) so I'm not holding my breath there. See also parkrun in Scotland...

I've done my two long term aims (sub 30 5k, sub 60 10k) and I'm not going to solo time trial a half marathon so I'm a bit lost for goals!

I'm sure there will be some options when DH gets his work patterns sorted but very meh.

Did warm 5k, and 1.5 miles as my benchmark run so

Tough tough run this morning; not that hot but up a steep hill then along the top, no shade, think I should have started drinking earlier, plus period started yesterday and I was feeling a bit off. Ended up walking a lot of it. Called Dh for moral support and the lovely man met me with a cold bottle of coke and some sweets at the end!
Parkrun supposed to start back up here on August 14th; I am meeting our other committee members next week to go through the new procedures and plan any changes to the set-up. So fingers crossed we don't get another delay.
I know what you mean about motivation @randomsabreuse, I find myself now with 3 races before the end of the year, that's definitely keeping me going!
