That sounds lovely @Purpleraindeer!
long run in forest today on hilly route. Warm & sticky & legs felt tired but kept going. Trialling some new fuel bars and they seem to be working really well.

Finally made it back out for a run on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Chuffed with myself today as I managed 10 1/2 miles which is the longest in a long time.

Do you think fuel bars help emummy? I never normally eat but could probably do with a boost sometimes.

I usually eat for runs over 9 miles. Before I’ve used shot bloks, which I still like. But I find that for long races I get a bit fed up with the sweetness eventually. So I’m training for a 50k and thought I would start trying some different things. These ones are working well so far - no stomach upsets and a steadier energy level.
I think from what I’ve read you’ve got about 90 minutes worth of glycogen and if you’re running for longer it’s worth taking something. Different for everyone of course.

Thank you emummy I should try it on longer runs.

Social run along the beach this morning.

@Doublethecuddles - I was given a really helpful piece of advice re fuelling for runs which was to fuel for the run tomorrow not the one you’re doing now. So just by having something to eat during a 90min plus run you make yourself less tired at the end of the run and you feel better the next day. I was told you should aim for 1g of carbs per hour per kg of body weight. I never used to eat anything so I really felt a lot better when I tried fuelling on runs.
I use combos of gels, drinks (tailwind), bars and normal food.

emummy · 22/06/2021 07:44

Steady run in lovely sunshine by the river and the castle, felt really good.

Went down with a bad cold which wiped out running for much of the week. I do like recovery drinks for after long or particularly tough runs - tailwind chocolate is my current go-to.

Purpleraindeer · 22/06/2021 11:55

@UnaOfStormhold I think I will be trying one of those. Im doing race to the stones over 2 days in a few weeks time. I felt pretty rough after doing 1x 50k so am hoping a recovery drink immediately post the first will help. I think that might be clutching at straws though Grin

Back to normal running today which was great. Felt good after taking it super easy last week. Have a weird ache in my thigh/hip though - not painful, but definitely something not totally right. Am hoping it just passes.

Hello again everyone, lost you there for a bit.

Interesting info on fuelling - I currently take a baby flapjack bar (one of the ones you get for weaning babies) and nibble that on long runs as they’re always something we have in the house. Feel like I need to be more scientific about it though? It’s a bit of a mystery to me at the moment, I need an idiot’s guide I think Blush

Done a few runs since I last posted, managed to do 10 miles again on Sunday, on a slightly less overgrown route and a much cooler day, and did it 20 minutes faster than when it was really hot. Unbelievable how much difference the temperature made, I actually enjoyed it, which I certainly didn’t the first time. And I managed to squeeze a fourth run in last week, just a mile and a half down to DS’s school, but it all counts. Going to try and do that again this week.

The trouble with the fuelling science is a lot of it is based on research done on small groups of fit young men. I recommend Stacy Sims work and her book Roar for information on female physiology and hormonal effects etc.

IRun4Me · 23/06/2021 07:11

Something I found that works for me when fuelling is to fuel earlier in my run than I think I need to. I learnt the hard way that if I feel I need fuel it’s often too late and also sometimes I feel grot post run.
I only eat (can’t do gels) on runs of planned 12+ miles but I will start taking fuel at around mile 3 to 5 and then continue every 2 to 3 miles (depending on the length of run). If that makes sense.

UnaOfStormhold · 23/06/2021 07:19

I agree that ROAR is good though I did feel that the advice was aimed at much more serious athletes than me!

emummy · 23/06/2021 11:19

Yes I start at 4 miles with eating and then do it every 2 miles.
I know what you mean @UnaOfStormhold! The principles are the same though, and I found the exercises useful

OP posts:
Purpleraindeer · 23/06/2021 20:28

I think it’s more important to fuel properly for us less serious athletes as we will feel the after effects of not fuelling more. I’ve noticed I feel a lot less tired whilst running since I started eating more on runs.

3 easy miles today. Did some yoga last night to help my dodgy hip. Ended up with a dodgy hip, knee and shoulder this am so perhaps the yoga did more harm than good. Sad

Hopefully will ease off tomorrow.

Oh no purpleraindeer that’s not good.
Lovely run today. Tried a new off road route really close to home and it was really nice. Will definitely go there again

Very sticky sweaty run this morning through town

Yes it has suddenly got humid here too @emummy. I was wearing a long sleeved top and was a bit hot.

Long intervals today. Was very uncomfortable when I started and it almost felt as if my leg wouldn’t straighten but it eased off as I ran a bit. Took it easier than I would have normally and by mid way I was moving ok. Im planning lots of stretching and moving around today and I’m hoping things gradually improve.

Spudlet · 24/06/2021 11:46

Hope you feel better soon @Purpleraindeer! I love a bit of yoga, but you do have to be careful not to overstretch yourself or push yourself beyond where your body is happy on that day.

Thank you @emummy and @UnaOfStormhold for the book recommendation, I’ll have to look it up 👍 and for the advice @IRun4Me and Purpleraindeer!

9 miles to add for me so far this week, 4 on Tuesday and 5 today. Feels funny that a couple of months ago, 5 miles was my normal weekend longer run, and now it’s a midweek job! The trails were really overgrown (again) so my poor legs are a state now - need to dig out some cream for them. Summer running really isn’t my favourite, I have to say. Also, I went swimming yesterday as cross training and realised, as I bobbed up and down in the slow lane, that it was the first time I’d been swimming (without a small child or on holiday) since 2004 😱 I really enjoyed it actually, although I can only really remember how to do breaststroke Blush

Well it wasn't pretty and it was very slow, and I stopped half way for a lug on my new constant companion, an inhaler, but I ran 5.5km this morning, my first in over a month. Felt good to be back.

Well done @Iamblossom, fingers crossed you’re well on your way back to normal.
No run for me, big birthday today so Dh & I are off for a walk around Loch Muick, up by Lochnagar. We will not be climbing any hills!

Happy birthday @emummy

emummy · 27/06/2021 10:07

Thank you! Took one of the presents for a test run this morning, a hydration vest. It was very comfy, and has many pockets, which makes me happy! The new shoes will get a wee test next week.
Nice sunny run this morning, this week is a cut-back week on the plan, just as well considering how much I ate on Friday!

Happy birthday emummy and welcome to the club - it’s not that bad really Grin
Warm run this morning, I was expecting it to be a bit cooler.
Think I need to remember how to slow my pace down so I can do some longer runs again. I haven’t meant to have got faster it just sort of happened.

You all may have motivated me to go for a run.Smile Really been struggling to get off the couch and stop eating biscuits during lockdown. Albeit I know that if I get going, I’m normally back to an athletic better version of me within a couple of months.

Normally I prefer exercising in the morning, but some of the pics shared are making me want to go for it, and head out later this afternoon with a view that it does not matter what I do or how slow I go, as long as I keep going!

Let’s see how I get on.
