Third year for me aiming to be as active as possible most days. So join me in setting a goal and keeping on track by logging on here Smile. I’ve set a 500mile run target this year to be realistic as I’ve nursed foot issues most of 2021 which really curtailed my running miles but sea swimming and trail running have developed into my passions. What’s your challenge this year?

Thanks for the ideas for motivation @LaLaLanded, I am committing to a long run tomorrow morning!!!

Wow @TheLongRider that must be hard as a cyclist to stay in such a small radius😬😬😬

TheLongRider · 05/02/2021 23:34

You can try it for yourself. Just allow the website to access your location and it'll show you!
2kmfromhome.com/

It could be worse, we were down to 2km in the first lockdown last March.

We were allowed to ride within our County last summer so I did this ride. strava.app.link/3W04ghxNDdb

(I'm not particularly worried about anonymity, it's a small country with a niche hobby and we're probably all related.)Grin

TheLongRider · 05/02/2021 23:36

I try and think of different ride titles or add pictures of random stuff I find on the ride. It's not Instagram worthy stuff, just a middle-aged woman going about her world.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/02/2021 23:56

Wow, great someone got that website up so quickly and that it's now being used all over the world!

TriSeaSwim2021 · 06/02/2021 06:58

Wow that’s a long ride my DH has done the odd long ride over a couple of days and was commuting 45m r/t to work. Makes my charity 100km ride in June seem tiny Grin but I know that will take 5-6hrs with quite a lot of hilly terrain and me a few months to build up cycle fitness to do it. How long have you been riding?

Run1000km2021 · 06/02/2021 07:47

Wow that’s quite the ride @TheLongRider!

TheLongRider · 06/02/2021 08:17

I've always cycled but only got into long-distance cycling eight years ago. I reckoned I wasn't getting any younger but I could still try new things. Women tend to be very good at endurance events, I never was a sprinter but I can ride all day.

The usual tips for increasing your mileage are that you can go faster or further but not both at the same time. Long-distance is as much about your head as your legs. You need to accept that it takes time in the saddle. Break a long ride into manageable chunks in your head, so it's 15 miles to the next town, that's an hour's cycling. Bring something nice to eat on the ride or plan a treat for afterwards. Usually if you can ride three quarters of the distance you can ride the full thing.

If you're worried about going further and not having the legs to get home, cycle your usual route but add an extra short lap near your house so that if you get tired you can get home easily. Build up the distance gradually and you'll gain the confidence.

Believe in yourself and be nice to yourself. If you are on the start line, you have just as much chance of completing the event as anyone else.

TheLongRider · 06/02/2021 08:23

Sorry for the essay. I'm off for a 90 minute turbo session.

TriSeaSwim2021 · 06/02/2021 11:16

That’s good advice TheLongRide & really similar to what I’ve used for running long distances I agree a huge amount is mental resilience after a certain point. The biggest restraint for me is usually time it just takes such a large chunk of the day Grin out. I’m still heavily restricted by childcare & work hours, & a dog now. But I’m looking forward to some longer cycles as the weather warms.

TheLongRider · 06/02/2021 11:27

I have a very supportive DH, he races, I do long-distance, DD does her own youth training, it's all go around here!

To carve out time, you have to be honest with your partner and they have to support you. Myself and himself usually sit down with our respective calendars and plan our main events allowing for work, chores and family time. Nothing builds resentment faster than selfishness or oneupmanship. You have to collaborate to get enough time for training. You also have to be honest about how much time you need to spend training to get results.

Anyway today's workout done, 90 minutes 36km. Onwards and out of this lockdown

Run1000km2021 · 06/02/2021 11:58

Really interesting post @TheLongRider, I couldn’t agree more!!! Long distances are all in the head. For me it’s a matter of mental preparation. I decide the night before and then in the morning I know what I have to do, no matter the weather or level of sleep deprivation!!!

THANK YOU @LaLaLanded for your wise words, I committed to a long run last night and did a Half Marathon this morning and LOVED IT! I even did it in a very reasonable time (well, for me! 2:23) despite telling myself I would go slow & easy.

Definitely got my mojo back🤩

197.2km down🤩

TriSeaSwim2021 · 06/02/2021 13:05

Ran 5.5k this morning and had seaswim dip after for 10mins but it was rather nippy this morning-2c scraping off the car. Arrh can’t see my totals I’ll have to copy them off n next post.

TriSeaSwim2021 · 06/02/2021 13:08

Updated totals

Running 132km
Swimming 4.7km
Cycling 93km

Run1000km2021 · 06/02/2021 15:19

@TriSeaSwim99 very impressive swimming in this weather!

ErrolTheDragon · 06/02/2021 17:09

It's just stopped raining here, now it's getting dusky.
5km on the rower,

175.7 walked
26.5 rowed

So over 200km total now.

Inniu · 06/02/2021 19:33

Two 7 km runs and lots of short dog walks over the last few days.

@TheLongRider You must have found the 2km restrictions very difficult last year. My DH cycles and was very frustrated. He has a 45km route within our 5km limit at the moment but really wants to get back up to the Dublin mountains on his bike

Walking 134km
Running 123/877

TriSeaSwim2021 · 06/02/2021 19:44

I’m in the SW and although it was cold it’s been a lovely sunny day today with no wind so a lovely calm sea. The strong winds return again tomorrow so the sea swell may pick up. Making the most of fab conditions especially in Feb.

TheLongRider · 06/02/2021 19:59

@Inniu I live at the foot of the Dublin Mountains and I have Ticknock, Kilmashogue, Cruagh Road and The Viewing Point in my 5km radius! I did a 40km ride with 1,000m of ascent in mid-January. I'd kill for a flat 100km spin into the flatlands of Kildare.

The 2km restrictions were shite but bearable because they were shorter. It'll probably be nearly 4 months before we're back to county boundaries.

Anyway, I'm capable of finding motivation in the small things and regular exercise is important to me.

drspouse · 07/02/2021 09:27

Only 2k yesterday with DD to the bakery and the library (to return heavy books but they were shut for a two hour lunch!).

TheLongRider · 07/02/2021 11:22

It all counts! 2km or 200km.

Another turbo session this morning 90 minutes, 38km. That makes 143km on the bike this week.

TriSeaSwim2021 · 07/02/2021 14:54

The calm sea state is still here so I cycled down for swim no5 this week.

Running 132km
Swimming 5km
Cycling 100km

ErrolTheDragon · 07/02/2021 15:25

Cold but dry here. 7.8km

183.5 walked
26.5 rowed

drspouse · 07/02/2021 16:26

Another couple of walks - 3k with the DCs and then after I came home and started feeling a bit under the weather, 2k to get a COVID test!

TheLongRider · 07/02/2021 16:34

I really hope you don't have it. We've been lucky so far...

drspouse · 07/02/2021 16:39

We have too, really really lucky as DH is CEV (though a new diagnosis over the summer and the recommendations were relaxed for CEV so he's been out for lots of walks thank GOODNESS). He had his vax on Weds so it would be RIDICULOUS if he caught it from me, now!
