New thread needed! All runners welcome, whatever your pace or distance.
Cold icy run for me this morning, couple of exciting sliding episodes! Not a fan of the ice...

Recovery week continues. Nice short run with DS yesterday and a 7km today.

Did a lovely 9miler yesterday, did 6miles+ today...my new Fitbit sense is v easily paused by accident and it's annoying, didn't realise I was on pause for ages. I'm absolutely knackered tonight. Absolutely need a rest day tomorrow

emummy · 16/01/2021 10:33

Welcome @Borisjohnsonshairbrush! So annoying when the watch does that; I have a habit of pausing mine for something and then forgetting to restart, then I get very cross with myself!
@Spudlet that was a seriously impressive puddle!
We were forecast to have snow overnight but instead it rains and today temperatures have soared to 4 degrees. So most of the ice is gone, it’s just hanging on around off road areas where it has been polished to glass. So had a nice relaxed run this morning with only one bit of skating.

Well, the last few weeks have been rather different running wise - with homeschooling and work taking up all daylight hours I've ended up having to run in the evenings which is a bit boring (I miss the scenery and softness underfoot of my favourite trails) and limits me to about 1 hour max which is messing up my HM training. Plus it's freezing! Luckily I have various lights and bits of high viz kit, and the streets are pretty empty.

I'm trying to fit in lots of hill work to keep building fitness even if I can't increase distance, plus I'm doing a strava challenge with my local running club which is helping to motivate me. I'm making slower progress on my virtual LeJog and I don't think I'll complete it by my target of end Feb but as long as I can do it by my C25k anniversary in June I'll be happy.

I wasn't thinking I'd have much to contribute miles wise but I have run a total of 29.5 miles since I last posted on 3 Jan so

Lots of snow here but got out in it with trail shoes it was fine. Bit chilly with the wind but so picturesque and a good workout.

Are these miles in here life time running miles or based on a countdown etc?

Iamblossom · 16/01/2021 16:08

Took my prosecco hangover on a 12km run this morning and it was great, my best for ages, thigh didn't hurt at all!

Pleased with my 3 runs totalling 32km this week.

Iamblossom · 16/01/2021 16:10

@Borisjohnsonshairbrush we add the miles we do to the number on the last post in thread, a running total for the thread (if you will excuse the pun)

dubyalass · 16/01/2021 17:44

Managed 7k today! Completely done in now.

Amaura · 16/01/2021 18:07

Tested out new trail shoes today on a hilly 10 miler (also Prosecco fuelled). Struggled with asthma today actually which was annoying. Bits of snow scattered around but not picture worthy

Hello all,
Can I join this thread please

Have been walking a lot, 5-7km every single day, over the last year. Really want to start running again!
I used to run, a decade back, before DD was born. 5k was my limit back then; ran a race4life etc

I have done couch-to-5k on and off in the last 3 years; never got to the end though!

I want to start running again, but, I have a problem that I haven't had before; pain in the arch of my right foot. It shoots to the lower calf. Any ideas on why this might be, anyone? TIA

I walk most days wearing a hiking ankle boot, to keep warm and to have better grip.

I have a old NewBalance shoe that I bought from a running shop, after having a gait analysis and unsurprisingly, it was one for overpronation WinkGrin Having read this thread, I realise that I need neutral, cushioned shoes. Looking to buy the Nike pegasus as it seems to be highly recommended as a starter shoe for pavement running?

Ralphiesaurus · 16/01/2021 21:00

Just checking in to say I've done my first week of consolidation runs post-c25k. I've done 3 x 30 mins. The most amazing thing about this for me has been that I've actually wanted to get out there each time - which is brilliant! So I'm going to do a second week of this and introduce some gentle strength training on alternate days this week.

WhatILoved · 17/01/2021 09:56

Loving all these pics of squelching mud. The last family walk we did before this lockdown started was sooo muddy in Kent. Well done Raphie
And well done on twelve km blossom

I managed 8km without stopping today so that's a best for me.

Houserefurb, could be your posterior tibial tendon which is associated with overpronation - I found this video helpful:
If it is that my podiatrist advised to keep wearing the insoles and to ensure I was mid rather than forefoot striking.

emummy · 17/01/2021 10:45

Well done @dubyalass, that’s great!
Really good to hear how much you’re enjoying your running @Ralphiesaurus.
Great work @WhatILoved.
Welcome @houseRefurb. Not sur about that pain. If it’s possible you could ask a sports physio for some advice.
Not a lot of squelchy mud here just now, it’s all frozen! Lovely cold sunny run today, with a 2 mile stretch of road where I just had to choose which bit was the least slippy to run on!

A slightly faster run with a friend this morning, which is good for my mental health.
houseRefurb l wear Brooks trainers which I find very comfy for beach and road running.
We have also been on lots of muddy walks and getting fed up squelching through mud!

50FootWave · 17/01/2021 12:22

@houseRefurb your running history is very similar to mine, lots of flirting with running, and I used to run a lot when I was in my late teens, but I've got back into it in really, really big way since October, when I did C25K. I also used to wear New Balance.

As others say, not sure about your injury, but I also wear Brookes trainers and they are delightful. In real life I'm a size 7, but I had my gait analysed when I bought these, and I'm in an 8.5!

Might be worth looking into when shops reopen again?

Anyway - well done all all the distances and conditions this week! Glad to hear no thigh twinges, @lamblossom

I've run four times ths week - and this morning ran my first 10km in about a decade too.

It's amazing how quickly you build up the stamina.

Spudlet · 17/01/2021 13:41

Longest run ever for me today - 7.5 miles. The last half mile nearly ended me and I had to walk a few chunks of it anyway as the footing was so bad, plus I saw some neighbours that I haven’t seen in months and so stopped for a polite chat across a field! And the stream (which is normally a bone dry ditch with a vestigial bridge) was flooded so my feet got wet. But I am quite proud of myself.

Well done @Spudlet! More challenging conditions underfoot.
I’ve just put my name on the waiting list for an ultra in September, not sure how likely it is I’ll get in.

Thank you for the welcome and all the responses.

@UnaOfStormhold
Thank you for that link. Found it quite useful to experiment with a few things to see what would help

ha!! rushed to get my shoes out today; will keep the Brooks suggestion for next time.

I tried my Nike Pegasus today, with an insole and at least it didn't hurt while I was on the road; thats a good sign, I think.

@50FootWave
Great to hear your experience and very inspiring for me to keep going!

Purpleraindeer · 17/01/2021 18:56

@Spudlet we are run twins today - mine was mud skating and wading. Lots of walking as it wasn’t possible to run without slipping over. As usual for this time of year I contemplated buying some innov8 mud claws but I never do! Waterproof socks are your friend if the conditions are like that. I love mine!

@emummy hope you get into the ultra. I’ve optimistically entered 3 this year. Surely one will happen?! I have a deferred place in race to the stones which I’m really excited about.

I’m stressing a bit as I have some calf pain and a slight feel of plantar fasciitis. I have done loads of stretching and will have a rest day then 2x easy days. I really don’t want to get injured Sad

@emummy beautiful sunrise!
@Spudlet well done!
@Purpleraindeer hope it's just temporary twinges

Spudlet · 18/01/2021 08:10

As usual for this time of year I contemplated buying some innov8 mud claws but I never do!

@Purpleraindeer Haha, me too! This is the second year running that I’ve been halfway around a run and started thinking about getting something a bit spikier - I won’t though. The idea was that I’d treat myself when I went back to work... job hunting isn’t going terribly smoothly at the moment though. Still, more time for running at least!

Toomanynotes · 18/01/2021 08:46

Loving this pictures of the UK countryside. Makes me feel a bit homesick.

Three runs to add:

A very hot 10km road run last Thursday night. Temperature must have been in late 20s even at 7pm but good for getting acclimatised for my ultra which is likely to be very hot.

A long and hilly 28km trail run. My friend, who I'm training for the run with, took me up the local hills and we explored the area. Climbed over 1000m in total so legs were feeling it by the end! It had clouded over a bit so not too hot at least - a few stream crossings as well so feet got wet, and a jam sandwich and twix at the Trig point helped. Grin

And tonight a 8km trail run out and back. We would have gone further but were worried about the setting sun and impending dark as we were running in the bush!

So 28.5 miles to add if I've done my maths correctly!

Doublethecuddles · 18/01/2021 14:15

Lovely run at lunchtime today on quiet roads, woodland and track. Nearly slipped twice on black ice and slipped in the stream when crossing but fortunately only one foot got wet. Ran 7.12 miles, which is further than my usual and much hillier.
Purpleraindeer hope it is just twinges
Spudlet looks very challenging. Well done.
Toomanynotes congratulations on the 28km trail run and especially the hills. Piece of chocolate always gives me the energy boost to get home.
