Couch to 5K - Run 1 done...

I did my first 'run' today. Think I'm going to need help to go all the way to week 9 but determined to do it before I hit the big 50. Anyone else started this week? Fancy a support thread? Couldn't see an active recent one.

6/3 done and it was hard. I’m tired today, really weary and didn’t feel up to it at all this morning. Pushed through and finished it but it wasn’t easy at all. That was the last of the interval sessions. Week 7 onwards is just solid runs. In some ways I’ll be glad to get on with it but after today’s iffy run, I’m a bit trepidatious.

Best of luck to anyone with their weekend run still outstanding.

RonBurgundyspanpipe · 17/05/2020 18:09

Going to post then go back and reread posts.

Completed the dreaded w8r1 and it was a dream. Much easier in the cool weather and my running belt was ace. I only recorded my running sections as the belt made it easier to faff with my phone. Hit loads of pbs, (love strava), fastest mile, km etc... and average pace has jumped to 7m43s/km. Happy with that, the extra rest day seems to have done the trick.

RonBurgundyspanpipe · 17/05/2020 18:18

@JonHammIsMyJamm well done for doing it even when you didn't feel up to it. Every run counts towards your fitness and the next one will be better.

@cannonball8726 I think PF can take a long time to heal. I wouldn't recommend running on it at all but there are some expensive but amazing insoles online that may offer some pain relief.

I did read the stuff on watches but I'm lost and have no clue what is what.

BookShop · 17/05/2020 18:42

Came in quickly to say I’m still running. 1hr today! 1 hour. 😁 managed to do 8.5kms I finished on a hill and am aching now but it’s amazing to think that at the beginning of April I couldn’t run for 45 seconds yet today I’ve done an hour. I’m so pleased with my progress. It’s been tough and I have cried, been achey, cut a run or two short but I’m running nearly every day and today I ran for an hour.

It’s hard but worth it. I’m still hoping to get to a 10km by the end of May.

imaflutteringkite · 17/05/2020 19:25

Gutted, my knees are aching so I think I'm going to need another rest day tomorrow. I was so looking forward to going out as well. I'm about 3 stone overweight so I daren't push my knees too far or I'll have to start from the beginning again.

Glitterbubbles · 17/05/2020 19:41

W3D3 done, onto week 4! Ankles are a bit sore. I’m on night shift for the next few nights so won’t be running, will give my ankles a rest.

Glitterbubbles · 17/05/2020 19:41

@BookShop that is incredible!! Well done! Very inspiring Smile

TryingToBeBold · 17/05/2020 19:54

@RonBurgundyspanpipe excellent news about the extra days rest! To me it makes all the difference in finishing the week. Run 2is always hard so an extra day is amazing.

@BookShop that's fantastic! How did you progress from 5k to longer? Did you just.. keep going when you felt like you could?

BookShop · 17/05/2020 22:53

@TryingToBeBold I think every run has a purpose. Even the bad ones where we feel as though we are getting nowhere. Keep at them and they are slowly but surely improving either speed, distance, mindset etc. For me I’m just stubborn and persevere. After every run I try to do a little bit extra so that I know tomorrow is do-able. I’ve tried the C10k app but needed variation so moved onto the NRC instead. I’m just pleased to get developing a habit and trying to push myself a little more each day.

I do think I need to incorporate strength training now I’m moving up because I’m getting a little achey afterwards. I don’t want to cause any damage.

GuyFawkesDay · 18/05/2020 07:56

Meep!! I just conquered W5R3!! Gorgeous morning to be out for a run.

Feel like I can officially start recording them now can run 20 minutes

GuyFawkesDay · 18/05/2020 07:57

@BookShop that's amazing. An hour seems impossible right now!!!

titsbumfannythelot · 18/05/2020 08:13

Well done @GuyFawkesDay, great way to start the week.

rarathenoisylioness · 18/05/2020 08:35

W5r1 done today. Found it much easier than all of w4. I'm hoping I have turned a corner!

GuyFawkesDay · 18/05/2020 08:41

W5 I seem to have found a rhythm. I think it takes 5+ minutes to get into that breathing/running groove? The first 5 minutes are hard and then I seemed to find a bit of a groove? Didn't have to think about what I was doing do much.

Skykavin · 18/05/2020 09:12

Hi everybody, hope it's OK to join! It's amazing to read so many people's journeys on this thread Smile

I've just done W1R1 this morning (in the rain!). Somehow accidentally managed to do W2R1 by accident for my first actual run on Friday 🤦🏼‍♀️

It's really hilly round where I live so I'm finding planning a good route on quiet roads hard. Also might need to buy some new trainers but don't want to do that unless I stick at the running!

Looking forward to the next run and to reading about everyone else's progress on here, it's really motivational Smile

TryingToBeBold · 18/05/2020 09:46

@rarathenoisylioness

Week 4 was awful! I've just done week 6 and 25mins of running and I'd still prefer it over week 4.

mama4321 · 18/05/2020 10:54

I did W9R1 this morning. I thought I'd try running just on the road this time instead of tracks/through woods as well to see if I could up my pace and distance. Unfortunately I forgot to start Strava until about half way through so I don't know. Also thought I'd try running to music instead of a story for the same reasons, but for some reason the music stopped about 10 minutes in. But, I finished the run Grin, and in the end that's what matters. How was your run today @choc27 ? Happy running everyone

Musicalmistress · 18/05/2020 11:02

@GuyFawkesDay I'd agree, I always find the first bit of the run really difficult till I warm up a bit more & hit my breathing 'groove'.
I did W5R1 today and found it ok although I was tired towards the end of the last run. I was quite proud of myself as it was drizzly & miserable here this morning & its a holiday here today so would normally have a long lie but wanted to stick to my running routine & got up to run leaving the rest of the house snoring away!
I'm a bit anxious about R2 as it a abut if a jump but R3 is terrifying me. It doesn't help that I'm lugging 20 stone around with me!

titsbumfannythelot · 18/05/2020 11:18

But you are getting out and do it @Musicalmistress, so well done for that. Get a good playlist sorted and you'll be grand.

I did week 6 run 1 today and it was fine. I do have a bit of a swollen ankle though. Any ideas what could be causing it? I don't think I have banged it and I definitely haven't fallen.

TryingToBeBold · 18/05/2020 12:26

@mama4321 even though strava messed up, how did it feel doing the different track.
I did grass off road once and almost cried it was so hard. So I've stuck to roads and paths since but people assure me that its easier..Sad

@rarathenoisylioness sorry didnt mean to take away from you completing week 4. Week 4 is hard so even finishing it is amazing. Every new run you do is amazing!

Stopthehop · 18/05/2020 14:17

Can I join in with you? I started a couple of years ago, got up to the 20 minute run and kept chickening out and putting it off and stopped doing it so I've started again. I did wk1 run 2 this morning. I found the 1 minute runs a lot easier this time around.

choc27 · 18/05/2020 15:13

Well done @mama4321, how was the different route?! Easier? I didn't really do w9r2 today because my 9 year old was desperate to come on a run with me and I wasn't sure how long he'd last having not played his usually 3 x weekly football for 10 weeks! We did 25 mins though and a few more hills than I'd like 😳. So I'll do w9r2 tomorrow!

Thankssomuch · 18/05/2020 19:44

titsbumfanny I have just done Wk 6 Run 1 and found it very tough. Didn’t have to stop running though, so that’s something.

BekindStayhome · 18/05/2020 20:14

@Thankssomuch I just finished w6r1 too and it feels great to have done it but the last one seemed to last ages!

rarathenoisylioness · 18/05/2020 20:46

@TryingToBeBold no need to apologise! Week 4 was hideous. I thought I should have redone w4 but glad I didn't.
