I did my first 'run' today. Think I'm going to need help to go all the way to week 9 but determined to do it before I hit the big 50. Anyone else started this week? Fancy a support thread? Couldn't see an active recent one.

For people wanting to plot a route..
Sign up to strava and if you use
www.strava.com/routes/new (web not app) you can plot route and see distance and elevation.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 15/05/2020 09:20

6/2 done (for me that’s 10r/3w/10r)

Again, found the first 5 mins of running hard and actually considered abandoning it and redoing it later or tomorrow. I stuck with it though and it got better. The endorphins kicked in at about 9mins and then I had a walk break, which wasn’t ideal. I did briefly think about running straight through and ignoring the walk break. I followed the plan though and did the walk break. The second 10mins felt great. Next run is 15min run, 5min walk, 5min run. Ramping up now.

GuyFawkesDay · 15/05/2020 09:24

It's really interesting to know that as you get into running further you don't enjoy/want the walking breaks so much.

I'm dreading running 20 minutes and wondering whether I'll cope!!

Will have a look at Strava. Won't be posting my crapness to Facebook though!!

JonHammIsMyJamm · 15/05/2020 09:30

@GuyFawkesDay, it’s more that it disturbs my flow. I find that I’m just getting into a rhythm with my breathing and footwork. and then the walking break bong goes off and I have to reset again.

TryingToBeBold · 15/05/2020 14:45

The great thing with Strava (app) is that it tells you your PBs. And believe me when you start breaking them.. that's one hell of a motivational kick start!

I've shaved 24 seconds off my 1k time in 2 weeks!

TryingToBeBold · 15/05/2020 14:49

@GuyFawkesDay its exactly that.
Running from 8 mins (and feeling like dying) to running for 20..is different. Your pace. Your breathing. Relax your shoulders. 10-14 mins was lovely and I didnt think I'd day that.

Going to intervals on week 6 was harder than week 5 20 mins.

MissOrMs · 15/05/2020 16:49

Love reading this thread and seeing that people find running 20mins easier than the intervals! Just did w5r2 today and really struggled, so much so that I stopped about 4 minutes into the second 8 minute run but then ran the last minute and continued a few minutes into the cool down!!

Feeling really annoyed with myself for stopping and now I’m debating whether to repeat it or just give w5r3 a go on Sunday. I kind of feel like what’s the worst that can happen? If I feel I have to, I’ll just walk for a bit!!

choc27 · 15/05/2020 17:37

I've book marked strava too, thanks!

ChanklyBore · 15/05/2020 18:03

Just do it MissorMs, It might feel better to run for longer!

I have my PBs on my Fitbit app.

My fastest km is 6 minutes 56 seconds so far.

Just going out for week 7 Run 1. Wish me luck.

RonBurgundyspanpipe · 15/05/2020 19:04

@ChanklyBore that's a good 1km time, my best is a good 45 seconds behind you. Love the strava stats though.

Think I'm going to have a second rest day Tomorrow, my legs are killing more than they have since week 1. This will be my first double rest day since about week 3 so I think it's needed. Nothing to do with week 8 terror.

RonBurgundyspanpipe · 15/05/2020 19:14

On another plus my running belt has just arrived, looking forward to trying it out.

Okki · 15/05/2020 19:25

What a lovely thread to find. Well done all of you. I've just done the first run of Week 1 and reading this has really made me feel positive. Thank you.

ChanklyBore · 15/05/2020 19:28

Thanks Ron. I spoke too soon because Fitbit tells me just did a 6.36s followed by a 6.44s, so I beat it twice

Possibly because I saw other runners who I slightly know and they were out running with their children who are about 10 and I was way too embarrassed to let them be faster than me, then had to keep up the pace until I was way ahead, in case they saw me slow down. Being British is complicated. But my face is a swollen beetroot and my left knee hurts. So probably, not wise Blush

ChanklyBore · 15/05/2020 19:32

I might have this weekend off too. It’s been a bastard week all round. Hope your legs perk up a bit and you’ll be raring to go after.

What running belt did you get? I still haven’t bought any gear. I like to go to real shops and online isn’t the same, especially for shoes. My trainers are knackered though. Now I’m running for longer I could do with something to hold my phone (I just hold it in my hand....)

Welcome Okki! Well done on w1r1, you will look back on it with nostalgia one day!

TryingToBeBold · 15/05/2020 20:03

@missorms I'll be honest.. week 4 I tried all 3 runs and one extra and managed it a grand total of once...
I failed so bad. And I just didnt want to cry over it anymore so I went to week 5..and am glad I did! Because I smashed week 5.

My current 1k time is 7:16. Just looking at investing in a sports watch so I can start timer after warm up and stop before cool down so it's more accurate to the running.

TryingToBeBold · 15/05/2020 20:04

@RonBurgundyspanpipe I always take a rest day between run 1 and 2 but then I take 2 days between run 2 and 3.. and then 1 day between run 3 and 1 of the next week.

RonBurgundyspanpipe · 15/05/2020 20:32

@TryingToBeBold good idea, this is the first time in a whole I've felt like I need to, I have to remember my basic fitness level at the start was low and is only just developing.

@ChanklyBore go you, being British is complicated. I constantly put myself down irl, like I've reached week 8 but I'm really slow, I'm on strava but my pbs are rubbish. Always a negative attached to every achievement.

The running belt if off Amazon, it only cost £7.99 so it may be annoying and spin around or bunch up. It's big enough for an iPhone and a key and bank card and has a hole for earphone wires. I've been using an arm band but it's a faff is my music goes wrong.

GuyFawkesDay · 15/05/2020 20:37

I bought running leggings with pockets

I will now refuse to wear anything else 😆

TryingToBeBold · 15/05/2020 20:45

@RonBurgundyspanpipe
I'm the same. Everytime I finish I'm just like.. how. But then I remember week one. I remember week 2. And then think.. hold on.. I ran for 20 minutes! (I still can't believe it!)

titsbumfannythelot · 15/05/2020 21:17

I bought running leggings with pockets from amazon, would recommend.

Have you looked on the run4it website for trainers?

TryingToBeBold · 15/05/2020 21:36

How tight are the pockets on running leggings? Will my phone slip out?

titsbumfannythelot · 15/05/2020 22:04

No, mine are very secure

GuyFawkesDay · 15/05/2020 22:06

Mine hold the phone brilliantly also from Amazon.

DivisionBelles · 16/05/2020 08:40

W4R3 done today. Onto the dreaded W5 on Monday. Eeeek! I've got leggings with pockets too. They're brilliant - phone on one side, keys on the other. Nothing falls out. These are the ones I bought - SugarPocket Womens Athletic Yoga Pants Workout Yoga Leggings Fitness Tights https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07PP58MM3/ref=cmswwrcpptai_0I5VEbHMN9MD6

titsbumfannythelot · 16/05/2020 10:10

You can do it @DivisionBelles

I've just completed week 5 run 3, managed to do the 20 minutes. I am a total quitter when it comes to exercise so feeling pleased that I managed it today.
