Our long running parkrun thread has gotten very quiet, so with the last 2019 results processed thought it was a good time to refresh ready for 2020

Parkrun is a force for good. Run, walk or volunteer. All are equally welcome. Saturdays 9am 5k.

So if you are a newbie first timer, a volunteer, a local regular or a challenge chasing tourist come join us here. Ask questions, share stories and let’s encourage each other in 2020

I smashed my park run PB yesterday knocking almost a minute of my previous best that's stood since last summer!!

Helped massively by a pacer shouting at me and a friend hanging back to sprint finish me over the line Grin

DeepfriedPizza · 24/02/2020 10:01

Well done on your PB! Dh is going to come with me on Saturday so he can get me a sub 30 on this course. It's really frustrating as my PB on a flat course is 26.17 but I can't get sub 30 on this one!

SegregateMumBev · 29/02/2020 13:03

Brrrrr that was a cold one! Had a very interesting experience doing my first parkrun inside a prison. it's so good to see this initiative for physical and mental health, as well as giving inmates something to look forward to when they get out.

AuntieStella · 29/02/2020 19:11

How does one arrange to do a prison parkrun? I thought it was only ambassadors and those connected with the institution who were invited in?

Very wet today - despite a once in 48 years opportunity to parkrun on a Leap Day, our numbers were well down. The puddles got larger during the run - second lap has a short section completely covered by water. Splish splash splosh!

BuddhaAtSea · 29/02/2020 19:24

Mine got cancelled :(

SegregateMumBev · 29/02/2020 21:41

Each prison is different, but there’s usually someone you have to contact personally. They may need to check your ID, or have someone vouch for you. Some of them have a waiting list that you can apply to be on.

BuddhaAtSea · 29/02/2020 21:55

How does that work @SegregateMumBev ?
I’ve ever only seen prisons in movies. How many laps of what to make 5k?
And was it a men prison or a female one?
I’m really sorry if I’m asking stupid questions, I just can’t picture it at all.

SegregateMumBev · 01/03/2020 07:33

This is an all male prison, but some of the staff are female.
6 laps of the central area!
No mobile phones.

CalmConfident · 01/03/2020 08:35

We did our course in reverse yesterday, and despite some grim weather we had record breaking attendance! Over 720 folk... likely due to multiple other cancellations but it was so busy especially with the unusual route Grin

I'm hoping someone can advise me! My son ran his 10th parkrun on Saturday (he'd not been for a while, but decided he wanted to do 29th February!) He is now eligible for his 10 T-Shirt, I've not had an email with a link to claim the T-Shirt. Do I need to do anything? Does it make any difference that we were not at our "home" run? I don't know what the timescale for these things is! Thank you wise parkrunners!

SegregateMumBev · 02/03/2020 11:51

Congratulations to your son!

If he goes into his "parkrun profile" and checks "club progress" you can see how far along the T shirt process is. For a while it was quite delayed, but I think they've sorted that out now.

Doesn't matter which one you ran at.

Gnome134 · 02/03/2020 13:10

Thank you. It is currently saying "you will be able to claim your T-Shirt soon". I'll await further developments!

DeepfriedPizza · 05/03/2020 13:50

Well done to your son. My daughter is at 6, fell out of love with running after 50 junior runs but is getting back into it.

I posted that I was trying to get sub 30 on a tricky course...smashed it at 28.56 Grin swore at my husband a lot but I am delighted

CalmConfident · 06/03/2020 23:57

Anyone running for international women’s day tomorrow ?

OP posts:
BuddhaAtSea · 07/03/2020 07:23

No, :(, I’m working today.

SegregateMumBev · 07/03/2020 14:35

Family duties today, but will be volunteering at juniors tomorrow.

CalmConfident · 07/03/2020 16:39

It was a nice morning, quite a few first timers...but I was slow :(

runningpink · 07/03/2020 21:12

I ran today but we as a core team chose not to do anything for IWD and to just keep it simple. A few folk had purple on though.

One of my worst runs time wise but really enjoyable as went round chatting to a friend at a comfortable pace.

BuddhaAtSea · 07/03/2020 21:36

I’m running next week with a friend and that’s exactly what I’m hoping for: a run at a comfortable pace so I can chat to her :)
I took my dog for a run today, she’s only got little legs, but she did 3k without stopping bless her, I might have shattered her though 😂. I’m going to take her for a 2.5k run every morning this week :)

BuddhaAtSea · 07/03/2020 21:40

Oh, and my mum is really old, she sounds like my grandmother now. She was sharing from the wisdom of a woman who has never run in her life, and she’s pushing 70: oh, they say excess running is really not good for you, you know!
Yes mother.
Well, she goes, I don’t know how it works, but I’m very envious you’re looking so much better than me.
It works when you run to excess, mother.

She drives me nuts sometimes.

moonbells · 07/03/2020 21:41

Ours had a lot fewer people turn up - almost back to pre-Christmas levels. I ran feeling like my legs had turned into lumps of lead. Bleargh. Came in with exactly the same time as two Parkruns ago, and I'd thought that time was rubbish.
Onward and upward...

megletthesecond · 07/03/2020 21:48

It didn't rain today Grin.
I do hope this weather is turning a corner.

BuddhaAtSea · 07/03/2020 22:20

@moonbells do you do other exercise apart from running? I do body pump and spinning and the strength in my legs is now formidable, I can run for hours and not feel a thing. My mind, however, gives up at the 4K mark 😂

@megletthesecond hear hear! I bloody had enough of running through mud!!!

FrangipaniBlue · 07/03/2020 22:36

Park run Sandwich for me today and LOADS of people in purple for IWD!

moonbells · 08/03/2020 15:21

@BuddhaAtSea I do elliptical, rowing, leg machines, spin bikes etc at gym. Walk a lot (c 18k steps a day) and a year ago my pb was just under 30 - now it's 5 mins slower!

Mind you I also weigh a stone more... makes quite a difference though that's being worked on! Got a place in an autumn '20 half marathon so I've started working out my training plan. Lot more time this year - last year I ran in the Oxford half with only 3 months to get from 10k to 21k and jiggered my knee the day before (!) which meant the race was painful and I didn't run for weeks after it - might have something to do with my current fitness levels!

Going to start with getting those parkrun times back down again.
