Our long running parkrun thread has gotten very quiet, so with the last 2019 results processed thought it was a good time to refresh ready for 2020

Parkrun is a force for good. Run, walk or volunteer. All are equally welcome. Saturdays 9am 5k.

So if you are a newbie first timer, a volunteer, a local regular or a challenge chasing tourist come join us here. Ask questions, share stories and let’s encourage each other in 2020

Well done everyone! Pom-pom marshals sound fun Grin

I tried a new one this morning - on paper it should be fast and flat, but a combination of the wind and some very busy narrow sections meant it wasn't anywhere near a PB opportunity. Still, did it in a solid 21 mins, and haven't battered my legs before my long run tomorrow.

CalmConfident · 11/01/2020 17:06

21 mins...(faints!) Grin

Ha! It took me a while to go under 30! Then getting from sub 30 to sub 25 was fairly straightforward. 25 to sub 23 was tough. And going from sub 23 to 20 mins has been very, very hard!!

BuddhaAtSea · 11/01/2020 17:36

@runningonempty84 good god, how old are you?!! 21min?!!! That’s insane! But really really amazing!

Runningonempty84 · 11/01/2020 17:52

I'm 35... and my PB of 20 mins was this year. I'm getting faster with age Grin And I swear each of the DC has made me quicker (probably stress!!!)

runningpink · 11/01/2020 19:31

I was due to go to an inaugural event this morning. I had offered to volunteer but they were all good so planned to run and help afterwards if they needed an extra pair of experienced hands. (I had helped a little with training some of the team.)

Unfortunately they had to cancel due to the weather conditions. And all the other events that I would manage to get to were also cancelled.

Gym day instead and went a soggy run on the afternoon.

Salene · 11/01/2020 19:38

I volunteered with my 3/5 year old boys, we did bar code scanning. Well I scanned and they handed out sweeties 🥰

Tomorrow my 5 year old is doing junior parkrun so I'm helping there, I need to run with him still so I am warm up leader tomorrow so I can then run with him.

My husband works abroad so when he is away I volunteer as no one to watch the kids very much then when he is home I run them

thebeatofthedrum · 11/01/2020 20:23

Just a quick question (to which I think the answer is yes) but does the green leaf on the results page mean you're a first timer?

CalmConfident · 12/01/2020 04:00

@thebeatofthedrum I have no idea, but your logic sounds right! Anyone else know?

@Salene we are just in process of launching our junior parkrun

Salene · 12/01/2020 06:17

Aww that's fab about launching another Junior PR , our one is really great averages about 150/250 kids each week. Great to see so many active kids Smile

SegregateMumBev · 12/01/2020 06:56

Green leaf is first timer. If you click on the "detailed" option rather than "compact" it tells you a few more bits of info.

My son is visiting NI at the minute, so we are planning Portrush next week, which is run on the beach! I must check the tide times.

He'll then be working in London for a while, and hoping to visit Bushy for his 50th.

runningpink · 12/01/2020 08:23

Segregate
Portrush is a lovely parkrun. A group of us visited last year. Really friendly bunch.
You will probably get wet feet regardless of the tide unless you go over the wee bridge they put out if the estuary isn’t too big.

SegregateMumBev · 12/01/2020 08:25

I've run it a couple of times, my parents live near there.

(I've done all the NI ones, except for the prison one Smile)

rivierliedje · 13/01/2020 22:23

I did my first parkrun of 2020 on Saturday. Unfortunately it was my slowest parkrun ever. And even more unfortunately I have done something to my ankle and it is now vry swollen and painful. I was limping all day yesterday and it is only slightly better today.

CalmConfident · 18/01/2020 18:41

A cold one today! Anyone else manage to get out parkrunning or parkwalking ?

OP posts:
Timeandtune · 18/01/2020 18:48

Ours was cancelled today due to black ice. Went for a 5k this evening to compensate. Hopefully back to normal next week.

werekitty · 18/01/2020 19:00

My fastest time yet 25.43, on a very flat course rather than my normal hilly routes. I'm happy with that but going to try and get a pb of under 25 minutes this year...

CalmConfident · 18/01/2020 19:05

Ours had slippy patches, definitely not a day for PB attempts!

OP posts:
Timeandtune · 18/01/2020 19:46

I am aiming for 36. Current PB is 37. 35 after 4 months of Park Run and decades of inactivity.

BuddhaAtSea · 18/01/2020 20:18

I went, and got a PB. I have absolutely no idea how the hell I managed that, because my course was the worst it’s ever been, really muddy on the grass bit and icey on the tarmac bit.
Because it was a sunny beautiful morning, I enjoyed it immensely:)

SegregateMumBev · 18/01/2020 21:07

Son and I made it to Portush! I knew it was likely to be ice-resistant, but we got up early to defrost the car. Boy it's a character building one! Out and back - you jog along by the waves lapping in, and the after the turn you suddenly find YOU ARE RUNNING INTO THE WIND! And there's no handy "oh I'll just run to the next lampost/ tree/ corner" marker. And half way on the return leg the rain started. I was listnening to old Eurovision tracks and laughed out loud at "Feel like I could walk on water".

Running on a beach is deceptively difficult - there's no bounce from the surface so it saps your energy, and it's on a slope, so one knee is getting it harder than the other.

But it's my old stomping gorund, and I had a great chat with an old school chum and a former work colleague. And then the compulsory family visits, which included a goat giving birth!

Salene · 18/01/2020 21:18

Volunteering again for us today , handing out finish tokens with my boys

Junior PR tomorrow for my 5 year old.

Runningonempty84 · 19/01/2020 08:58

Ours was on, but lots of ice patches slowed me down a LOT. Still, ran a steady and chatty 22 mins, with a good group around me. Long run today.

SisterAgathaVanHelsing · 19/01/2020 12:22

Wow, Running, 22 mins is a much slowed down time, AND you were chatting. Not going to post my times Grin
