Our long running parkrun thread has gotten very quiet, so with the last 2019 results processed thought it was a good time to refresh ready for 2020

Parkrun is a force for good. Run, walk or volunteer. All are equally welcome. Saturdays 9am 5k.

So if you are a newbie first timer, a volunteer, a local regular or a challenge chasing tourist come join us here. Ask questions, share stories and let’s encourage each other in 2020

No running yesterday as have hurt my ankle. Volunteered at junior PR today, doing bar code scanning, really enjoyed that and got a beautifully sunny (and icy) cycle to and from the park.

Runningonempty84 · 19/01/2020 17:48

Wow, Running, 22 mins is a much slowed down time, AND you were chatting

I used to be a LOT slower. I've done parkruns of 32 and 33 mins that felt much tougher than 22 did yesterday! I've just done a lot of training since then Smile

iwonttaketheeasyroad · 19/01/2020 19:19

I overslept yesterday so missed parkrun so did
5k on my own in 33 mins, which I was very happy with.

Hopefully I will make it next week

eenymeenyminyme · 19/01/2020 19:24

Both of my local ones were cancelled so I did my own 5k route and was less than a minute slower than my PB which I was quite happy with!

Incidentally, did anyone see why the Bradford parkrun was cancelled? Grin

parkrun 2020 - all welcome !
CalmConfident · 19/01/2020 20:29

That has made me chortle !

😆 where did you find that?!

CalmConfident · 20/01/2020 00:13

It was posted on the parkrun tourists Facebook page - think it is a screen grab from the stuff the parkrun EDS can see .

Can I join in? I did some touristing at the weekend - best my previous PB by over a minute although still haven’t gone sub-30 yet - did it in 31.10. Pleased anyway though as I tweaked a hip flexor earlier in the week and had jogged 2k to get to the Parkrun, so under the circumstances I think I did ok. Also, when you add in the jog there, that makes Saturday my longest day since I started running again.

Still want to get under 30 minutes one day though! DH has started running again as well now, so if I don’t get my time down before he does I will be properly annoyed Grin

Dreamer1989 · 24/01/2020 10:20

I am doing my first stint volunteering as Tail Walker in 2 weeks, pretty nervous as I am around 44 mins normally. I dont have to run to keep up with the last person, do I?

eenymeenyminyme · 24/01/2020 10:31

Dreamer1989 Have a look at the parkrun website for last week's results of where you're tail walking and scroll to the bottom of the results page to see the slowest time.
I'd be surprised if it's faster than 44 minutes...

SegregateMumBev · 24/01/2020 11:21

I'll be tail-walking this week. Looking at the event's previous few weeks results the tail-walker time and that immediately before it were:

51.08 - 49.58
56.57 - 56.41
49.31 - 49.31
57.20 - 57.20
49.36 - 49.36

So mostly yes, the tail-walker is just behind the last runner. But you don't have to be. From a safety perspective, you're there to make sure no-one gets into difficulties, and you should have a phone and a contact number in the unlikely event that this happens. And keep the last group in your sights.

Some people will want to chat, others will want to do their own thing, listen to music etc. You may find if it's a multi-lap course that you'll get some drop outs, and so might have to hurry up to catch the pack.

I sometimes offer to lift the cones and arrow signs on my last trip round, which will make the time slower, but saves the rest of the volunteer crew from a trip.

thebeatofthedrum · 25/01/2020 10:50

I did my second parkrun this morning with both my daughters. Well, I say 'with' but they were both miles ahead of me. I did a walk/run/walk/walk/walk/run etc today. My walking pace was probably slower than last time but I ran an awful lot more! And both my girls cheered me on at the end and ran the last 100 yards with me :)

rivierliedje · 26/01/2020 08:21

I ran again yesterday, which felt difficult bceause I haven't run for two weeks because of my ankle, I had to walk on the hills again because of my dodgy ankle not liking the angle. But I actually managed to be slightly quicker than two weeks ago. So I was happy with that.

Am off to Junior park run in a little bit. It's very wet and windy today, so the bike ride there won't be as nice as last week. Oh well. It feels so great to do.
I'm looking in to the Parkrun Practice initiative (for GP practices) which has recently started in this area.

BuddhaAtSea · 26/01/2020 09:00

I was at work yesterday. And I’m working again next Saturday. I’m busy most Saturdays in Feb it seems, but I’ve got to also volunteer at some point!!
I really like the winter course, the normal one is a bit of a trudgery.
I’ll do 5 k in a bit, I’ve got a bad cold and I’m feeling rough, but hopefully day nurse will kick in soon :)

ShinyGiratina · 26/01/2020 11:53

I walked my local parkrun yesterday. I was aiming to gently run around 35 mins as my RED run (I did 10miles a few days ago) but I ended up walking at a good steady pace chatting with a friend who's nursing an injury. I really enjoyed it!

Been tail walker at the juniors this morning. Another RED tick. It was a lovely morning for it. Fresh, fair weather and no painfully slow tiddlers shuffling along, just a nice steady walk. I like tailwalking on days like that! I'm guessing it's like that with the 5k, people are there of their own free-will and keep going.

The juniors can be a lottery if you have a little one in a changable mood/ motivation, or worse a pushy parent pushing them along when it's really time to concede that it's not the day and try again another time (especially if the weather is hard going that day). There was a horrid one last summer who kept nagging and cajoling and doing lots of pintrest motivational speaking, then got the go pro out to show daddy the video of how she was going and then stropped at the end of the lap because she'd quelled any bit of interest that the 4 year old had had at the start. Sad

Mine are old enough to do juniors on their own and do their own pace. I just ask that they go out and try what's right for them that day. Occasionally they're not feeling the love and stop after one lap. They dabble with 5k now (currently on a winter break). They're just asked if they accept 1 lap= no result, and they tend to be fine with that choice. There's plenty of other parkruns if today is not the day.

Hi all, ran well today -delighted to knock exactly a minute off last weeks time!

OP posts:
CalmConfident · 01/02/2020 16:26

How did everyone else get on today?

SegregateMumBev · 01/02/2020 16:35

Was at an event's 200th, so there was cake! And the lord mayor ran with us!

My Garmin's battery died, and I was walking a fair bit up all them hills, I'd expected a time of around 40, so I was veyr pleased with a 35.

AuntieStella · 02/02/2020 14:02

One runner in Cardiff had a spectacular 01/02!

Timeandtune · 02/02/2020 14:07

I volunteered yesterday then did my own 5k in the evening. I enjoy being a marshall but it was very wet and cold.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 02/02/2020 14:33

I got my purple shirt this week. I've only actually done 1 parkrun (which I walked rather than ran) then broke my foot but at determined to get back this year. I don't want to do one until I can run the whole thing so am working steadily through C25k at the moment in readiness.

RubySlippers77 · 03/02/2020 20:19

I still haven't made it to parkrun with the DC Blush combination of them being ill and the weather being rubbish. Hoping to persuade them soon as it looks like a lovely community to be a part of!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 03/02/2020 20:41

We had record attendance at our junior parkrun - 80 runners! My DH was RD which was fab. We'd done some promotion at the local school so that really helped.

Ran Maidenhead on Sat as a tourist - haven't actually run parkrun myself for donkeys years since fucking up my knee then starting up our junior event, so it was really nice to jog round with friends and get reminded of how great parkrun is Grin

thebeatofthedrum · 08/02/2020 23:12

Did my third one today at Hastings. It's an easy course, there and back along the seafront and although I'm still pretty much at the back I was over a minute faster than the last time I did it.

Just out of interest, how quickly did you all pick up speed?

DeepfriedPizza · 10/02/2020 14:59

Can I join in? I've done 76 runs and 73 volunteers. Trying to even them out so I can do number 100 for both on the same day as tailwalker. I was marshal on Saturday with DD (DD is 20 volunteers) then junior parkrun was cancelled yesterday so didn't get my volunteer credit...
