Our long running parkrun thread has gotten very quiet, so with the last 2019 results processed thought it was a good time to refresh ready for 2020

Parkrun is a force for good. Run, walk or volunteer. All are equally welcome. Saturdays 9am 5k.

So if you are a newbie first timer, a volunteer, a local regular or a challenge chasing tourist come join us here. Ask questions, share stories and let’s encourage each other in 2020

If you're in Ireland (or Scotland) it's a 9.30 start!

BuddhaAtSea · 01/01/2020 08:12

Morning park runners!
About to set off to my local (has a stupid gradient, it’s a killer). I can’t say I enjoy running up the hill, but I love it once it’s finished 😂.
I am aiming to get my 50 T-shirt this year, I’ve done 11 last year. I work some Saturdays, so I won’t be able to do 50 in 2020, but if 2020 gets be a red T-shirt, I’m happy, even if so count the previous ones :)

Please please please, anyone who is scared of park run, come give it a try, even if you walk it all, it doesn’t matter! We’re a friendly bunch, one of us will walk with you, you’re not slowing us down and would love to chat to you when you go at your own pace. See you there!

Morning folks and welcome to 2020!

Morning all. Was going to do the double but overslept slightly so now off to the later event! I love park run but refuse to set an alarm as up so early all week. My runs are normally after work or about 10 am at the weekends. Our nearest is also about 25 min drive so don't get there as often as I'd like.

I really do encourage new runners to take the plunge. The best thing about park run is it's inclusivity. Yes there are the athletes lunging at the front but a 45 min finish is to be embraced and celebrated as much.

daydreambeleiver · 01/01/2020 08:32

My New Years resolution is to not find excuses not to run! I did my best time ever last Saturday.

MotherOfSoupDragons · 01/01/2020 10:13

Have recently completed c25k at 57 and will be starting park run soon. I promise.

CalmConfident · 01/01/2020 11:18

Back from token / barcode scanning duty. It was great to see all the runners finish right from the speedy ones to the tailwalker. Nearly 600 people today Shock

Well done to everyone who got out and about this morning, here’s to a fab 2020

@bulletjournalbilly that's lovely if I've inspired you! I hope you get out and enjoy running.
Did my home run today, but wishing I'd attempted a double! Happy New year park runners!

megletthesecond · 01/01/2020 12:54

I was a tourist at an exceptionally busy parkrun in the south west. I did fairly well considering I was freezing for the first lap and it was packed.

SinglePringle · 01/01/2020 13:09

I did my first this morning! Used C25K (week 2) and whilst I definitely got lapped (lots!!) I didn’t finish last. Was at the back though! Don’t care, am just pleased I finished.

Now soaking in a magnesium bath!

user1471539385 · 01/01/2020 13:17

Hungover and dragging a tired LittleLegs around the course today for our slowest time ever! Still faster than everyone tucked up in bed though. Love parkrun, even when it’s not pretty! Looking forward to Saturday.

BuddhaAtSea · 01/01/2020 13:40

I got a PB!!! So chuffed! It really is a killer hill and I hate hills. Been on the same times for ages, I managed to shave just under 2 minutes off.

It was rather quiet though, nowhere near as many as we normally are. Didn’t do a double, went back to bed after a shower 😂.

And I think I was the only ‘redder’ too!

runningpink · 01/01/2020 13:52

I ended up doing the double run and also a volunteer double. Stepped in at the second event to scan as was so busy.

Both events got a record attendance. Good fun but I could do with a nap now!

Skatesbythesea · 01/01/2020 14:01

I' m doing it!. My local running club is amazing. I am joining them again next week. the plan is to complete the Couch to 5K and once I can reasonably run 5K I will go and do the local parkrun. And try a few.

wiltingflower · 01/01/2020 14:02

I started and restarted couch to 5k a few times now (currently on week 5) and did my first park run today- loved it! I managed it in 45 minutes without stopping or walking once which was amazing. I focused on making sure I kept going rather than speed so I'm really pleased with today.

ShinyGiratina · 01/01/2020 14:13

First parkrun of the year done. Volunteered for the juniors on Sunday too. I'm a RD with juniors and I always feel a bit torn when my 3 regular parkruns make their regular appeals for volunteers as I know the feeling of gaps on the roster, but I give most of my avaliable Sunday 9ams to the parkrun movement, whether my DCs make it out or not! I've still volunteered more than run.

Run #37 done this morning. Went touristing to a different one and met a friend. I suspect it was a lot busier than usual. I've been #500+ before, but not when running all! My home run has had 3-400 more than usual and smashed their 600 odd record! I've kind of got a new home run that opened in 2019 that relieved a hundred here and there off the surrounding runs.

I registered about 5 million A-numbers ago, but had a few years of children's activities on the same time slot, so this time last year had only about 7 under my belt. If I got a move on in the early days, I could have had a 10 t-shirt Grin DS2 has his 10, but the DCs are on their winter break until warmer weather comes.

Anyone lurking and wondering whether to go, go for it! I've varied between mid-pack and keeping the tailwalker company and it's always a great experience Smile

thismeansnothing · 01/01/2020 14:22

Just done my New Years doubles. parkruns 134 and 135 and different event 61 and 62. Drove an hour and did Skipton then a bit further down the road for Cliffe Castle. Superb way to start the year. Just annoying parkruns not something I can do consistently every weekend as DD1 has dance lessons on a Saturday morning 😭

Freshprincess · 01/01/2020 14:30

Double for me. Fortunately my local one is only a mile away so for both of them in easily.

Good to see how busy they both were.

CatherineCawood · 01/01/2020 14:35

Was all set to do the double which would have been no 149 and 150 but had weird stomach in night and wasnt sure I trusted it this morning Blush Annoying as I had all my clothes laid out! Argh.

Volunteering on saturday.

AuntieStella · 01/01/2020 16:28

I did my planned double - first one was the faster (wouid have been a PB for that course except I had to stop twice as each shoelace decided to untie itself). Second felt like hard work and was a poor time, but looking at Strava afterwards I ran negative splits so that was good, as well as the sense of achievement of doing two.

I'm volunteering this Saturday at my home run, where we're expecting high numbers (pretty typical for January). So if you're considering coming along because more activity is your New Year's resolution, please do. Because we're expecting this and all ready!

Kitkatforchristmasdinner · 01/01/2020 18:03

Thanks for all the volunteering info. I'm not quite fit enough to do 5k yet but might go and volunteer until I am ready to run.

Runningonempty84 · 01/01/2020 18:17

Where's this parkrun with a killer hill, @BuddhaAtSea? I love a hilly one.

I enjoyed today's NYD parkrun, though the mammoth attendance led to some timing confusion, and I haven't got an official result. Doesn't matter though, as I was v slow anyway, due to doing it as part of my long run.

Hoping most of those newbies boosting the attendance enjoyed themselves, and come back on Saturday .

TFthatsover · 01/01/2020 19:02

I finally did my first Parkrun this morning after having 4 months off running due to back problems. I kept the tail walker company for lots of it but the support was amazing so didn't feel like a total failure. Will go back next weekend for a slow trot and hopefully my fitness will return and I will get faster.

SinglePringle · 01/01/2020 20:15

Just got my time... 40 minutes. The fastest was 17 so more than double mine Grin. Still, there were 60-odd people after me so not too shabby for a newbie. Can only get better!
