CalmConfident · 28/12/2019 14:17

Our long running parkrun thread has gotten very quiet, so with the last 2019 results processed thought it was a good time to refresh ready for 2020

Parkrun is a force for good. Run, walk or volunteer. All are equally welcome. Saturdays 9am 5k.

www.parkrun.org.uk/

So if you are a newbie first timer, a volunteer, a local regular or a challenge chasing tourist come join us here. Ask questions, share stories and let’s encourage each other in 2020

Anyone else's local park run Director speed read through the welcome this morning then just shout "right GO!!" so as the limit the time people were stood in a huddle?! Grin

AuntieStella · 14/03/2020 19:04

I was a tourist today, but the briefing was minimal (normal briefing for first timers, little more than rapid mandatory H&S, milestones and volunteer thanks in the main one)

But one comment stuck with me. That this might be the last parkrun for weeks/months, and people need to check for notifications

FrangipaniBlue · 14/03/2020 19:33

Ours also asked people to refrain from hugging and kissing each other but no mention of it being last one

It probably will have been mine though - DS was sent home from school yesterday with what look liked signs of maybe a tummy bug but by the time I got home from my run today he's got what I'd say are 90% of the Coronavirus symptoms so we're now all in isolation!

I'm banking on (if that is what he has) getting it given that I have asthma so I'm not holding out much hope of getting out of my house for the next 10-14 days by which time things like park run will probably all be off Sad

megletthesecond · 15/03/2020 09:26

We missed yesterday and numbers were down despite it .... not raining.

Has everyone else seen the Parkrun Freedom link on their profile? I'd never clicked it until now. You run the same course and pop in the date and time. It doesn't count towards milestone runs but it does keep a routine going. I think me and DS will do it this week after school when the weather is nice. The park should be safely busy, not packed but not isolated in the stretch between trees.

SegregateMumBev · 15/03/2020 11:23

Junior parkrun this morning had made some sensible modifications.

No water provided ( people were told to bring their own if required)
No high fives on the way round.
Disposable finish tokens ( genius!)
Gloves for finish token giver outers and scanners
No bunching up in any queues

But running events are being cancelled left right and centre.

AuntieStella · 15/03/2020 11:46

I think that running events that routinely attract over 500 will have to be paused soon. Which will mean all parkruns, as they've been clear it's all or nothing (and being an event that prides itself on inclsivity, it'll suspend anyhow when the over70/other vulnerable isolation comes in, if that's first)

Running clubs will probably continue to have group runs, but if they din't already, they will probably start to meet outdoors (only those who want to drop bags electing to go inside, or use cars for storage)

SegregateMumBev · 15/03/2020 18:08

Our runnng club has new routine:

No need for everyone to crowd into a small space to sign in out out.

No club warm up run - just go to your training specific group.

Keep distance

Watch this space, and keep hopeful

AuntieStella · 18/03/2020 09:29

I've just had the email cancelling UK parkruns, definitely for this month, and expect it to continue suspended after that.

With a plea not to just turn up at a parkrun course and run it at 9ish on a Saturday . If you're going to log freedom runs, do them a different time or day

BuddhaAtSea · 18/03/2020 10:15

My running club is cancelled as well. I totally understand why.
Luckily I have places to run, it’s not the same without my lovely parkrunner buddies, but needs must.
Stay safe everyone.

SegregateMumBev · 18/03/2020 10:22

I did cry when I read the email, even though it was not a surprise.

I've already got my 5k route planned for this weekend, not a parkrun route, and one well away from other people.

CalmConfident · 11/04/2020 22:15

How are all not parkrun runs going folks?

OP posts:
SegregateMumBev · 12/04/2020 07:56

I try to get out on a Sunday morning when it's quiet. And i've been working on upper body strength, and with resistance bands, indoors.

Taswama · 14/04/2020 20:49

DS (12) is missing parkruns. He had recently got his 10 milestone t-shirt. I was hoping to get my 50 this year. We didn't go every week but once or twice a month.
We didn't go to the last one as I was already avoiding big gatherings by then and it was was over 700 the previous week.

megletthesecond · 19/04/2020 09:21

How is everyone getting on? Me and 13yr old DS are getting out for a 5k around 5 times a week. Not getting any faster mind you Hmm. Getting in around 12k steps a day which should keel me ticking over.

We managed a parkrun freedom just before lockdown and might try one during the day this week. Not sure if the park will be quiet enough though. Everyone seems to have found the use of their legs lately.

SegregateMumBev · 19/04/2020 10:21

I'm restricitng myself to one outdoor run a week (but we have 2 dogs, and DH and I take them for a walk each day)

Enjoying my resistance band and weight daily workout!

reallyneedmoresleep · 20/04/2020 16:31

I am missing parkrun very much indeed.

CalmConfident · 21/04/2020 23:00

Me too....was supposed be the launch of our junior parkrun this coming weekend 😔

SegregateMumBev · 22/04/2020 08:20

Are you on any Facebook parkrun groups? There's some fun challenges on there, such as spelling out "parkrun" or the name of your local one using the street names that you are currently running around.

CalmConfident · 22/04/2020 12:38

I did the “spell parkrun in street signs” it made my run more of an explore and I got my town a-z out to find the elusive u.

Turned out more than 5k but I enjoyed my little adventure and took me to new parts of town.

How is everyone getting on without your weekly parkrun fix?

I’m not missing the running side of parkrun to much but I am really missing seeing my parkrun friends.
We are having weekly zoom catch ups which is good but not the same as actually being with one another.

rivierliedje · 26/10/2020 12:25

How is everyone getting on with (not)parkrun. I'm getting in to a sort of groove of adding one run a week, not finding it nearly as motivating though.

AuntieStella · 28/10/2020 12:11

I've logged quite a few, but I keep forgetting to do it! As you can't go back and add to previous weeks, then it looks pretty patchy!

Do any of the apps which scrape data to log progress against the weird and wonderful non-official challenges grab the (not)parkrun data? If so, then I might remember to add more often in a frenzy of badge-hunting!

With possible exception of Channel Islands, I can't see parkrun returung before spring at the earliest

CalmConfident · 29/10/2020 11:53

I am getting back to running in November so going to use weekly (not) parkrun to check on my 5k time progress. Need a bit of motivation through these winter months.

CalmConfident · 29/10/2020 11:55

I miss parkrun too...especially as we were ready to launch juniors :( I will try to enjoy my easy going weekends for now !

@CalmConfident Launching juniors sounds exciting. Hopefully 2021 will be the year.
