Tapering is always nice to give that wee bit of extra energy as kitten says. 5 or 6 k sounds good, maybe less or none on Friday and none on Saturday. Recovery is up to you. You've been running that distance regularly but you might push harder in your race, so either taking an extra day off the following week or running shorter distance at slower pace might be good. Really up to you though, maybe just see how you feel. And good luck!

TriSkiRun99 · 14/02/2019 08:52

I ran 5k on the Thursday then nothing until Sunday of my half and I was twitching to get my legs running Smile but I did have a good half hr walk on the Saturday plus a swim Friday so I didn’t do nothing but felt rested for a long run. Good luck hope it goes well and the weather is kind to you. My legs & body have felt very tight and achy since Sunday, even with a massage, swim and couple of short walks since the weekend. I think for me running just that bit faster pace and tight shoulders holding tension due to the headwind and the cold weather plus that “race” feeling left me exhausted Grin I feel twitchy to run today but I can’t fit it in so Friday I plan to run now.

BusterTheBulldog · 14/02/2019 10:09

Oh Crickey OYBK, resting is rubbish. If it’s any consolation I’m always sceptical about the physio exercises but they always, always work so fingers crossed you are back before you know it!

For half’s and under I tend to do my normal routine the week before but just take things slightly easier. I don’t run Fridays anyway, and The sat before I normally just do a 2 mile trot around the block with 3 sets of strides thrown in at the end.

How exciting thenew, are you all ready?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/02/2019 10:29

Thanks everyone. Buster I feel ready for the running part (I think) but if I'm honest it's the 'race etiquette' I'm nervous about. The chip timing and registering and getting there on time and people/spectators etc. Which is why I'm doing it really as I have a half M in April so I wanted to experience it first. Annoyingly I have a slight pinch in my knee today which is probably a result of increasing my distances recently, so I will definitely be taking it easy next week now.

emummy · 14/02/2019 11:47

Lovely easy run in the forest today, mild enough for t shirt & capris.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2019 11:52

The good think about races is everyone is nervous and wondering where to go. My obsessive worry seemed to be around toilets.

That's really good to hear Buster. Have you found things get worse before they get better? I'm doing exactly as I'm told it struggling to walk even more now. I think I might phone them up and ask if I should carry on with the exercises.

BusterTheBulldog · 14/02/2019 16:04

I worry about toilets! My race on sun starts 5 mins walk from my house so hoping I’ll be ok for that!

Hmm, yes I’ve found generally at first that everything is painful and I’ve had to adapt exercises, eg holding onto things etc, but then a definite turning point. I would definitely call them though! When is your half again OYBK?

Lunch intervals for me, went a bit faster than when I did the same session recently which is pleasing!

Hi - I've been stalking this thread for a while and finally feel like things are going well enough for me to join, if that is OK? I've had a few false starts returning to running after DD (she's 3.5, so need to stop using her has an excuseSmile), including a very long break due to injury. I'm finally back and enjoying myself - mostly limited to around 5k due to time constraints, but I'm toying with entering a 10k in May to give myself something to work towards. I’m not speedy, and never will be, but I’m hoping to get back to what passes for form for me this year.

Last night’s biggest challenge was getting out of the door. My knees protested for the first 1.5km, so much so that I nearly got on a bus and went home, but I pressed on and ended up having a great run – each km progressively faster, 5.5km done in total, at a decent pace for me and ended feeling like I could have gone further.

Hi Quantum!

Sounds like you are doing well! I quite often start a run with niggles (so much so I have a 1 mike round the block loop that I use to test things just in case I really do need to go home) and 9 times out of 10 they do settle once I’ve found my stride. I like to have things booked in too, until they get close and then I worry Grin

Your run yesterday sounds perfect, I almost always mess up trying to get negative splits so well done!

emummy · 14/02/2019 17:13

Welcome Quantum! Go for it with the 10k in May - I'm doing one then too, not thinking about it yet!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/02/2019 17:37

Toilets at the race should be ok, it's at a local park and is 3 5km loops of the same course, so in theory I have 2 mid race opportunities for a stop! I am
Hoping to not need to though. It's a bit of an experiment to see how long I can last.

I have just been to tkmaxx and bought myself some nice new running tights, they are a kind of Suede-y feeling fabric inside and quite thick because my legs are freezing in the mornings. While my body quickly warms up, my legs don't so I thought I'd treat myself. I'm having real trouble st the moment with some of the cheaper kit I've bought recently, they just feel like they are falling down wild I'm running and Even Though they probably aren't I'm constantly hoiking them up, it's very distracting. TK have some really nice stuff in, I could have bought loads.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2019 21:22

5 weeks Buster. I did call them and they dropped one of the exercises and introduced another.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 14/02/2019 22:50

Thank you for the welcomeSmile! I've done it - I've entered the Vitality 10000 in May. This is actually the last 10k I ran before I got pregnant, and I really enjoyed it. I've heard it isn't as well organised as it used to be, but it's still a lovely route. My goal all the time I was injured was just to get round a parkrun again, and I was so focused on that for so long that I've felt a bit aimless since I managed that a couple of months ago. This should help give me a bit more focus.

I'm jealous of your new kit, thenew - I desperately need some, but can't really justify it at the moment - need to run off some more weight first!

emummy · 15/02/2019 10:59

Hill reps in the sunshine today. Managed 12 so well chuffed.

IRun4Me · 16/02/2019 11:53

I hope the hip exercises are starting to work BadKitten I wonder if you are doing the same Half as me, as mine is in 5 weeks. Is it in London?
Good luck next week AverageBear I always locate the toilets and join the queue early. Lots of people will be nervous I just end up chatting away to anyone before the start Grin
Welcome Quantam I still use my 11 year old as an excuse!!
Got back out there today. It was perfect weather, but felt like April not February. The ankle was ok, a slight niggle but nothing major. Got in to my zone after about a mile and just kept going and managed 9 miles so feeling much more confident again. The hip started to hurt after about 8 miles but that’s my longest distance for a while.

DaffoDeffo · 16/02/2019 12:08

Did a 10km today but walked 5 and ran 5. My aim for this year is to do a sub 30min 5km (I am v slow Grin and recovering from 3 hamstring tears last year). Did the running 5km in 33mins do reasonably happy with that! Lovely day, it is so mild outside

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 16/02/2019 12:42

Parkrun for me today. DD and DH came along to spectate, which was nice. We went for McDonalds breakfast afterward, which was even nicerGrin

The run itself went very well - I came in at a shade under 30 minutes, which is very good for me

Irun no, I'm doing the Stratford upon Avon one. It's on 28th April.

Tried my new running leggings, they were awful. I deduced eventually that they were too big, or at least the elastic wasn't tight enough at the waist, they kept slipping round so sort of pulled half a circle round at the crotch. Oh my days, it was infuriating while running. Eventually I took my jersey off, (thankfully was wearing a vest underneath) ties the sleeves as tight as I could, then folded the top over to fashion a sort of makeshift belt, then pulled them up as high as they'd go and that worked. This morning I've unpicked the stitching and threaded a new elastic through, a fair bit tighter, and hopefully they will be better. I'm contemplating a switch to traditional joggers with a drawstring (eg tracksuit style) as every pair of tights I buy ends up having some sort of annoyance and I resort to wearing my old seen better days ones from good old Lidl. If anyone hears of Aldi or Lidl having their sportswear events please please let me know!!

TriSkiRun99 · 16/02/2019 15:18

My Lidls ones are still good too bear Grin but I do have some M&S ones I bought after a recommendation on here I think and they are high waisted with good drawstring & big pocket in the waist band. The only thing that makes them not perfect is that they don’t have zips on the ankle.

Ran 5k Friday and ParkRun today with the kids.

TriSkiRun99 · 16/02/2019 15:40

Anyone tried these? They were in a “best” list and appear to tick my wish list. www.decathlon.co.uk/kiprun-womens-compress-tights-id_8505357.html

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 16/02/2019 17:31

I only get on with running tights if they're super-high waisted. Like, proper granny pants high. I've got some ASICS ones that are good and I was so excited I went and bought 4 more identical pairs. I'm not looking forward to when they start to go in holes. Which will be all within a week of each other as they were all bought at the same time!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/02/2019 18:12

Tri yes I have some M&S short ones that have drawstring and they are excellent. Just too cold for shorts! Maybe I will try again for some longer ones. I am tempted to try some bigger brand ones instead of the cheapies but I'm wary because every pair I've bought recently have had some issue that I haven't noticed until after I'm actually running in them. I can't afford to waste money, but I feel it's possible that it's a 'buy cheap, buy twice' scenario- although my Lidl ones disprove that as they were about £4!!

TriSkiRun99 · 17/02/2019 08:15

I agree quantum my wish list is bigbum high waisted, drawstring, waist band pocket which can hold phone size and zipped ankles. Surely it can’t be THAt hard to find them under £25?! Maybe I have unrealistic expectations Grin

emummy · 17/02/2019 10:27

Drawstring is essential, although I don't mind so much about the pocket. My 2XU compression ones don't have a pocket so I just wear a waist pack with them. Otherwise mine are all by Ronhill, most of my leggings/capris are 2-4 years old and going strong!
Long run today, seriously hilly but lovely along the river & through forest. Perfect running weather at the moment, hope it lasts!
