15 mile race from me yest, kept it steady as was testing injury, everything held up though! There was a massive hill in the last mile, WHY?!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/01/2019 13:14

That is very mean!
Well done though :)

Topsyturvey10 · 21/01/2019 22:20

In a moment of madness I have entered a trail/fell half marathon. It is my first trail run of that distance and in around 4 months.

Has anyone one here used any hilly half marathon training programs that they would recommend? Ideally 3-4 runs a week as I would struggle to do more. Thanks very much

Alex3101 · 21/01/2019 22:55

I've just done a Trail half with 670 metres of climbing in Snowdonia and I've got a similar one in South Wales in 3 weeks time.
I run 3-4 times a week, I pretty much follow the same thing for a normal half but I make one a hill session. That can either be a specific hill session or my longer run could be a hilly one. I do one session about 3 weeks out in a multi storey car park running up and down the stairs.
That does include downhill running, that can really punish your legs if they aren't used to it.
I also do a strength session once a week, that makes a massive difference. You really need strong glutes, quads, hamstrings.

emummy · 21/01/2019 23:04

A regular programme done on hilly routes would be ok; I do my intervals & long runs in hilly routes. If no hills stairs as Alex suggests. If you can get some practice running downhill on trail. If you investigate what sort of surfaces you'll be on you can try & get some practice on similar to give you confidence on the day. Trail running magazine & website may have some useful info too. Good luck!

Tempo run today in beautiful sunshine, slightly less chilly - maybe above freezing for a change!

Thank you emummy and Alex3101 for the advice. I will have a look for a plan later on. I am usually shy of hills but I know I must embrace them now. The half marathon trail run has a 2 mile hill, I only discovered this after entering🙄

I've got a basket at Sportshoes waiting to checkout and have decided to go with Inov8 Roclite 305. The reviews seem ok and Nicky Spinks has them in her collection. I am umming and aaahhing about an Ultimate Direction race vest in Wiggle too for drinks, food and layers.

I also found a few companies that do either a day or weekend introduction to trail running which might be worth me going to.

Alex3101 · 22/01/2019 16:27

I've got a couple of different size Ultimate Direction vests/packs. They really are the best ones I've used hence I've got 2 now, they are light fit well and they are really well laid out. I use a race vest for half's or summer marathons and then I've got a pack for marathon distance and further.

Alex3101 · 22/01/2019 18:12

I'm not sure where you are but if you want a weekend away trail running this is a fantastic place to head.
Coed y Brenin has way marked running trails from 5km up to 1/2 distance. There is a trail running shop there that has a massive selection of Salomon trail shoes you can try out. Check out

www.runcoedybrenin.com
Also we've stayed here a few times and the cottages are great
www.coedybrenincottages.com
Salomon also did some how to trail run weekends last year so it maybe worth checking and seeing if they are doing anymore this year.

Tempo run for me too in slightly icy snowy weather. Was very pleased with my time 5k - 29 mins 15. My second sub 30 5k and in less optimal conditions.

You'll be getting into warmer weather by the race Topsy
The snowdonia half sounds rather tough!

The other thing I forgot to mention with the strength work is a really great site called Kinetic Revolution.
If you find them on Facebook they have a 30 day free challenge which is a programme of stretching and strength exercises. He also does some free training programmes as well.

Topsyturvey10 · 23/01/2019 22:14

Thanks for those recommendations, I'll have a look at the strength training. The coed brenin place in Wales looks great. I might try and persuade DH he would like to do some biking while I run. I was looking at the Keswick mountain festival in May but Wales could be an alternative.

I have spent most of the evening (again) looking at gear - Garmins mainly. Unfortunately it's too icy here to run safely. Some runners at the local club have recommended their models of watch so I checked each one out. I am none the wiser now and need to do more research before I make a decision. I'm not sure whether to get one from EBay to begin with and if it goes well I could upgrade in future🤔 Realistically I won't be going off on my own and am either in a group or doing a signposted organised run so its time/pace/ text and call notifications that I need. And compatibility with Strava, after all if it's not on Strava it didn't happen😂

Alex3101 · 23/01/2019 23:11

The one that the vast majority of people I run with or the most popular at the running club I'm in is the Forerunner 235. It does everything you want it to do and a bit more, you can create and download training workouts like intervals etc. It's got built in heart rate (it works with a chest strap as well) it is connected and has live tracking.

BusterTheBulldog · 24/01/2019 08:45

I have a 235 too, it’s good, does everything I need and is easy to use. I got it second hand off eBay about a year ago and it’s been great!

Also have an Apple Watch series 1 which is great, I only got the garmin as if I did longer runs (2+hours) sometimes my apple battery wouldn’t last dependent on when in day I did run.

Both sync to strava!

7mile club run on tues and 5 miles around intervals yesterday.

Topsyturvey10 · 24/01/2019 08:56

I had a look and I think I will try my luck with a Garmin 235. I might get one from eBay as there are plenty on there...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2019 09:03

I have a vivosport. I chose it primarily as I have tiny wrists and the screen is relatively small. The battery life is pretty good, though on a long days cycle I have to recharge it at lunchtime if I want to track my ride.

emummy · 24/01/2019 14:21

Lovely slow easy run through the sunny forest with the dog today; decided to change down from the planned interval session as feeling a bit tired. Feel great now!
I have recently got a forerunner 235, having previously had a Tomtom runner, which I loved. Liking the garmin so far, just getting used to its little ways!

FATEdestiny · 24/01/2019 15:23

I have the Fitbit Charge 3, previously had the Charge 2. I love them both and couldn't manage anything bigger on my wrists.

TMI alert - I have acquired myself a urine infection. Two consecutive runs (both 10km) where I've wet myself a bit while on a run Blush, thank goodness for black running tights.

This is despite running first thing, on only a cup of coffee and having a last wee before leaving the house. The first time I just thought it was an unfortunate accident (4 children, perimenoporsal), but yesterday it happened again and I was dashing to the loo all day.

So today I did my run in two halves - 5km each way to the pharmacy, picked up some of those sachets of powders for water infections. Also used their toilet while there. Give that three sachets for 2 days and if no better I'll try the GP.

Funny how you notice things more when they affect you. I seem to have read several posts on the Run Mummy Run about exactly the same issue with other running mum's. So good to know it's not just me.

FATEdestiny · 24/01/2019 15:28

112km since my last update.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/01/2019 16:14

Fate for me. any run above ten km must be via some sort of toileting facility, either a public loo (my 10 mile route today has one half way!) or a supermarket, or even McDonald's. I think knowing there isn't one is half of the problem! It's so much of an issue for me that I am having ongoing concerns regarding my upcoming races. The 15k in February is at a park with toilets (and it's laps so should be fine) but the Stratford half in April concerns me. I've had various advice from others, things like not drinking too much before hand, and wetting your mouth but not guzzling loads, but if it's a warm day I will definitely struggle.

And don't even get me started on bloody circuit training where the young handsome PT gives us old girls loads of skipping, box jumps, star jumps up do. However there i I think he'd be more mortified than me!

emummy · 24/01/2019 16:28

At my boot camp it's quite common for someone to do an alternative to the jumping & skipping! We're all in our 40s and 50s. I think our 27 yr old super fit female instructor finds us both amusing and alarming!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2019 17:23

I've found that as long as I run after 9am most of my toilet issues seem to have been resolved. So I'm really pleased that my half in March starts mid morning.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2019 17:23

massive sympathies on the infection though, they are bloody annoying.

AnotherOtter · 25/01/2019 07:16

Two steady 5 mile runs and a tempo 5 mile run (need to mix up distances a bit) which was in gorgeous winter sun with snow on the ground and snowdrops peeking through. Just beautiful.

Hope you feel better soon, FATE. UTIs are a goddamn nightmare. I have an overactive bladder (previously had urge incontinence) and take medication for it plus had some stress incontinence which has been helped hugely by regular and consistent pelvic floor exercises. Very much recommend the NHS Squeezy app. Our situations are different, of course, but I have found that my bladder irritation is worse if my urine is too concentrated, ie not drinking enough. Was also advised to avoid all caffeine as that increases urine production.

I'm another who absolutely has to have toilet facilities available. I can't restrict fluids as I'm on lithium (dangerous to become dehydrated as the level can quickly become toxic) so I plan around toilets. Thank goodness for google!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/01/2019 13:37

9 mile run this morning. It went really well, though my splits wildly veered between on pace and somewhat faster than on pace. I finished still with spare energy and was sad it was over. I think I can increase my target pace.

I do however have my first chafing issue. It's currently weeping. ow. On my bra band between my boobs. I've got a decent sports bra that I thought was holding things under control. I've bought some body glide which should arrive in a few days. Any other tips while it heals?
