Judged my run/rest day badly, decided to rest today and go long tomorrow, and then checked the weather. Snow forecast tonight! So the ground could be icy tomorrow morning, if not under a thick layer of snow. I'm stuck in with Ds all day now so I'm going to take this opportunity to dust off the treadmill and do some speed intervals/sprints today in case I can't get out tomorrow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/01/2019 14:30

argh on the snow forecast!
Bit of an icy/muddy run this morning. I stayed off road and went up hill and down dale Grin. I'm really pleased with myself for managing it, considering how sore and stiff my joints are. It's beginning to feel like a flare. It needs to sod off. 7 mile run in 1hr 13.

No ice or snow, here but brrrr the wind is so cold!

Today was my long run and as an experiment I took half a dozen jelly beans with me to chew. I only did 14k, so I know not really long enough to need food, but I am glad to report they didn't upset my stomach and I actually finished the run with a good-ish amount of energy. Very heartening.

Happy weekend running one & all!

just to add a PS - I've just looked it up and jelly beans have about 6 calories each, so surely 24 calories cannot have actually made any difference to my legs at all?! Must all be psychosomatic. Ho hum.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/01/2019 18:13

Daisy did you hear/read recent studies that said swilling your mouth with glucose drinks and spitting them out had the same effect on performance as actually drinking them? Something to do with your body's response to the sweetness rather than the sugar itself. So maybe the same applies with the tiny amount of glucose in a JB?

Daisydoesnt · 18/01/2019 19:20

Newaveragebear thank you so much for your post - I had no idea about that!! I have just read a couple of articles online and yes that appears to be a well known affect.

This is referring to a study carried out by the University of Birmingham: "Sugar in the mouth is detected by specific receptors (specialised cells that can detect changes in the environment) which stimulates an area of the brain involved in motivation." Which is why if you are feeling really weary or a bit lightheaded, a bite of chocolate makes you instantly perk up, long before the sugar can hit your bloodstream. This effect is apparent in exercise up to 1hr duration.

This is why you see athletes swilling their mouths with a sports drink and spitting it out - you don't need to swallow it to gain the benefit over short/ medium length exertions.

So sounds like it might be worth taking a few sweeties for say a 10k race as well? Even if it's just for the "motivation" factor, not because the glycogen in your muscles is depleted?

Thanks ever so much for flagging that up, really interesting stuff.

PS I do not have a science-y brain so apologies if I have totally misrepresented this all!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/01/2019 19:31

No worries, it's quite interesting isn't it? I suppose partly because sugar is so ingrained in our culture as a 'reward' and a 'treat' and also because it does have some pain relieving properties as well. Distraction helps too so having a few in your pocket as a back up could be extra motivating!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/01/2019 20:10

That is interesting. I tried some deliciously ella energy balls on my run today. They weren't for me. I decided I don't like chewing when running and the nutty bits hung around forever. I need to try something different. Is there anything dissolvable? If not, jelly tots sound appealing.

Daisydoesnt · 18/01/2019 20:26

Ohyoubadkitten I don't like the idea of chewing either, so I just held the jelly beans in my mouth till they more or less dissolved, then swallowed them. Worked for me!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/01/2019 20:37

What about a love heart or a refresher (the crunchy ones not the sticky ones!)? Although I dread to think of the state of my teeth if I held a love heart on my gums for a half marathon!

emummy · 18/01/2019 20:42

I used to halve jelly babies so I didn't have to chew. The clif shot bloks dissolve if you don't chew them, although they take a while!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/01/2019 23:06

I need to hit the confectionary aisle clearly Grin I'll try all those and report back.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/01/2019 09:18

Kitten it's good of you to take the responsibility of eating all the sweets finding the best one. I'm going sugar free til Easter (really badly, but I'm trying) so I will enviously read the results of your experiments!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/01/2019 10:00

It's a noble thing I do... Grin

TriSkiRun99 · 19/01/2019 11:13

I bought an emergency finger of fudge on a long run when I was crashing and it tasted heavenly melted in my mouth and I finished my run ok Grin but alas I couldn’t carry one of those as it would be a gloopy mess in my back pocket! I’ve been taking a sugary Lidls snack bar with me an apple bite thing that melts quickly with minimal chew needed and has worked on 10-13m runs for me. I eat it at the 10km mark. Plus I use 5-6 jelly babies too.

Had great morning ran to ParkRun 4K, did my fastest this year PR then ran a long loop home to make it upto 10m. Now utterly crashed heading for a salt bath before I have to take over mummy duties again this afternoon.

all I've done is put clothes on Grin

emummy · 19/01/2019 11:44

Cold & misty run/walks this morning - new parkrun trial done! So once round course setting it up then round again as tail walker. Went well, roll on the real thing!

Added my miles for 2 runs and I even managed to do a short one while it was snowing last night.

Watching all the comments on food with interest, I usually run out of steam after 7/8 miles if I haven't got food. Usually it's jelly babies or jelly beans I find easier to take as they don't melt. Saying that, I haven't managed that distance for quite some time...

TriSkiRun99 · 19/01/2019 13:36

Your comment made me giggle badkitten Grin hope you have gday though. I’m eating chocolate now yum....then I wonder why I can’t lose weight Hmm

IRun4Me · 19/01/2019 18:05

I’m eating all the Christmas chocolate!!
Still managing to get out every day. Did a 5 miler today and was really pleased managed to do the first 3 miles in 27 minutes and the whole thing in 46 mins. Was really impressed with myself. I think it’s because it started sleeting and I wanted to get back home

Easy 5 miles, parkrun then easy 2 miles home. My parkrun has pacers this week and I followed the 25 one round. Was actually pretty astonished that I could keep up as she was ahead of schedule - got that elusive runner's high I think. Was feeling good so made a break for the 24 pacer and finished just over. Delighted and so impressed with my body that has come so far from the abuses it went through (no exercise at all, BMI 41, etc, etc). I'm turning into one of those running evangelists Grin

Interesting talk about taking food out on long runs. I don't think it can all be psychosomatic. People who have diabetes sometimes get hypoglycaemia (hypos, low blood sugar) and that is classically treated with five jelly babies. That provides around 20g of carbohydrate and raises blood sugar from below 4mmol/l to around 5-6 in around ten minutes. A non-diabetic runner won't be hypoglycaemic but should still get a boost in their blood sugar. There is a definite physiological response to relativity small amounts of sugar.

New route today; dd was in her rehearsal in Aberdeen so I went for my long run there. Lovely cold sunny morning, nice being somewhere different.

DaffoDeffo · 20/01/2019 12:58

What a beautiful day

Did 10km (walk run). Not sure how much that is in miles - is it around 6? Have just added that on

602.3

Funnily enough I am far faster on the road than I am on the treadmill. Walked 5km out and ran it back and ran back in 35mins

emummy · 20/01/2019 13:50

Oops sorry, I pressed a wrong button entering my miles and messed up the total. Should be 512.5. Sorry!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2019 18:27

Grin Emu! That's rather funny!

I did some CT today - got out for a 20 mile bike ride, with some tough hills. Should have taken out my test sweets energy lozenges with me.

You know when you are cycling up a hill and all of a sudden your legs just feel really weird and can't provide any power, then after a few minutes something kicks in and it's all ok for the rest of the ride? Is that when muscles are switching from aerobic to anaerobic exercise?

Well done Otter that's an awesome time!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/01/2019 12:45

5k run, it felt much better and was nice and quick for me despite some short but tough hills. In the interests of research I tried fruit pastilles. No idea if they were helpful, but two chews then tucking into the side of my mouth resulted in a nice sugar hit, followed by nice mouthwatering tangy-ness. Definitely a contender.
