Hi lovelies! I was just about to join the running thread and saw it was almost full and couldn’t find another
I’ve copied below from the last thread and I hope you don’t mind me joining you all!

This is the 12th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 10.2 for September

Best wishes

Should just add- this is in training not racing. I'm not sure what I'll do for my actual race.

emummy · 15/01/2019 12:11

Tempo run today, not brilliant but was on a hilly route so trying to be proud of the effort and not look at the numbers!
I hope you get a chance to practice nutrition before your race bear - you might find you're better without it! Always a good idea to have a go in training & see what your tummy will tolerate. And what works - I tried dried cranberries once & nearly inhaled one when trying to eat & breathe at the same time!

Emummy for me it's the dreaded stitch. If I eat beforehand, even several hours beforehand, I will have a stitch within a hundred yards. It makes running such a miserable chore, so I almost never eat before now. Sugar is a natural pain reliever so maybe the sucking a jelly baby every half hour or so has other properties other than fuel? I listened to a very interesting podcast by Run to the Top, it was with South African marathon runner Tim Noakes who challenged the high carb diet for athletes and recommends a keto diet (too extreme for me, but I do low carb)- and he has done done interesting research on using glucose drinks while running/before running.

BusterTheBulldog · 15/01/2019 12:40

16 miles since my last post. Did a lot of driving yesterday and my sciatica has flared up which is annoying. Lots of stretching / rolling today and then a steady club run later.

I can’t have anything chewy daisydoesnt when running so no jelly babies for me! If I’m doing a race, I’ll use sis gels and take one about every 4 miles. I’ll also have a caffeine bullet before the start. For longer training runs, I’ll have a gel at about mile 5 and mile 10, definitely try a few though as they can affect your tummy!

Hope the sciatica settles down Buster.
Run to & from boot camp today. Wind & rain forecast but we got bright sunshine instead! Now to see if we get the snow tonight...

I’m still managing to keep up the running everyday but short ones for me since the weekend.
Definitely trial food and energy supplements daisydoesnt and averagebear on practice runs before a race. I can’t take the gels as I end up with flashing lights in my eyes for about 15 minutes - which was not a good discovery during a half marathon. I take dextrose tablets or energy bars for 10 miles or over. I do take jelly babies or chocolate buttons but I don’t actually think they do anything apart from a treat to get me to the next mile marker.
I’m so impressed with your stamina and distance fate I think my body would reject me if I tried those distances. But I’m getting old Grin
Hope the sciatica is better buster
Let us know if you get snow emummy just grey, cold drizzle here

Also if anyone is interested, Jasmin Paris presently on course to become the first woman to win the Spin Race outright! This is a 268 mile race along the Penine Way; she's 8 miles ahead of the first man with 20 miles to go and may even break the course record! She is an amazing woman. Fingers crossed for her.

emummy · 16/01/2019 11:34

Aargh, that should of course say Spine Race, although I'm sure she's very good at spin races too!

BusterTheBulldog · 16/01/2019 14:12

Thanks for the good wishes, it is literally a pain in the bum!

Wow, thanks for the tip off emummy, what a woman she is! Love the fact she’s beating men too!

8miles at club last night, intervals later 😬

Added my last run in and hoping to go out this evening too. I am braving a new local club as an desperate to get a bit quicker and more running/intervals will be the only way.

Has anyone seen Nicky Spinks. I watched a YouTube film of her running a double round in he Lake District. It was epic and she did really well, didn't even look tired. It's a an interesting watch and inspired me to actually do a trail/fell run instead of just talking about it.

Has anyone on here done any, if so which ones and how did you find it?

emummy · 16/01/2019 16:49

Nicky Spinks is my hero! I have done 3 trail races, 2 were half marathons & one was 15 miles - at night, in winter, with 2 humongous hills! It depends what races you do, my favourite of the 3 was the GlenCoe half, which was beautiful but very tough. I haven't done any straight up a hill & back down races. If you sign up for a hilly trail race, practice running downhill, it's an art!

Topsyturvey10 · 16/01/2019 18:57

emummy thanks for the advice, those downhills look 😱 and I haven't done anything like it before. I found a company who do Ladies only trail running weekends which I thought I might try in spring.

I am thinking of doing the Wharfedale half in June so time yet to get to grips with it.

Can I ask what shoes you wear? I have been looking at Salomon Speedcross 4 but after the Nicky Spinks film I fancy Inov8 Roclite 305.

emummy · 16/01/2019 20:15

I wear Innov8 now. I did have a pair of the Salomons, but they really squashed my toes. Innov8 separate their shoes into standard and precision fit; the standard are lovely and wide at the toe - no black toenails in 2 years for me! I have had the roclires, which are brilliant. I currently have xclaws as they are more padded for my old feet on long runs. I wore the roclites for Glen Coe, they were fab.

Topsyturvey10 · 16/01/2019 20:37

Thanks emummy that's really helpful and made me decision for meSmile

AnotherOtter · 17/01/2019 11:09

47.8 miles for me since my last post just after the New Year which included an absolutely stunning 5 mile tempo run in the frosty winter sunrise and another in stormy showers that I just loved. Still not done any more fartlek, am slacking a bit there!

Congratulations to all the PBs and distance milestones. Everyone is doing very well.

The thread has moved on but just wanted to say thank you for your kind words, Daisy, and I think this Runner's World article about the effects of weight on running times is balanced and informative.

The Highway Code has advice on what to do if there is no pavement to use.

We have the snow kitten! Intervals in the snowy forest today, got caught in a blizzard for a bit then the sun came out.

Lovely picture! :) Thank you for sharing! It looks stunning.
It's possible that from next Tuesday it could be quite a big event for many. Bit of a knife edge though.

I've done two 5k runs. Yesterday I was bored so mixed up the run with some fartlek style sprints and walks. I dunno if it was that, or that my inflammatory arthritis is making an unwelcome return but both my knees started aching last night even when sitting and they've not stopped.
I might have to play my LR by ear tomorrow.

emummy · 17/01/2019 12:07

I hope your knees settle down soon. Do you have to run on roads or are there any softer surfaces you could go on?
The snow just now is perfect - enough to look pretty, not enough to cause trouble! Dd1 is in the middle of higher prelims, we don't want any school disruption.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/01/2019 13:58

Oh I hope we don't get any! I live on top of a hill and for some reason they never grit our road (ludicrous as there's two schools on the road!) last time we had snow it was knee deep and the pavements were lethal. Looks gorgeous though!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/01/2019 15:36

I am running off road mostly. It could be the cold getting to them maybe. Or I might be coming down with a virus, that often starts a flare. It's so odd to have gone from bounding up the stairs, back to heaving up like an old lady in one day.

The snow watch thread is active if you want to keep an eye on things. I'll get more specific about locations for potential over the weekend.

TriSkiRun99 · 17/01/2019 17:03

No snow forecast here we’ve at the other end of the country my kids would dearly love some though! It’s perfect running weather for me cold, bright, clear and lovely fresh feeling. I squeezed in a 20min run earlier as don’t think I’ll get a chance tom, but weather permitting really need to get a long run in on Saturday as it’s 4weeks to my half and I’ve only done 5ks in the last month due to illness & work/sick kids grrrr.

Daisydoesnt · 17/01/2019 17:18

Thanks for the tips everyone about taking food out on long runs - so many have commented and I have read them all avidly! I have my LR tomorrow of 14km, I know it's not really long enough to warrant snacks but in the name of experimentation I am going to take some jelly babies out with me and see what - if anything - happens!

AnotherOtter I remember our earlier posts about that elusive sub-60 10km and specifically the relationship between body weight and speed. Thank you for that Runners World article, very clear and interesting. Unfortunately, it tells me that I have pretty good body type to be a fast middle distance runner (shortish, lean, with skinny calves) so I can't blame my slowness on that! I think I just have to keep working hard and trust that it may come eventually Grin

DaffoDeffo · 17/01/2019 18:00

I have done 2 lots of 5km

430.6

I am painfully slow so am working on my speed now. Am still doing 5km in around 37mins but did do a 4km in 25mins so I'm starting to get quicker :)

I'm still really enjoying it though

BusterTheBulldog · 17/01/2019 22:53

intervals yest, a 4mike run today where I spectacularly cocked up trying to do 2 miles at marathon pace, and hills tonight.
