Hi lovelies! I was just about to join the running thread and saw it was almost full and couldn’t find another
I’ve copied below from the last thread and I hope you don’t mind me joining you all!

This is the 12th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 10.2 for September

Best wishes

Adding my plod round last night. Trying to keep up 3 times a week.

thenewaveragebear your new trainers sound 👌 I am coveting some Salomon trail shoes at the moment but can't bring myself to pull the trigger on the purchase after only just getting new road shoes before Christmas.

Is anyone doing their local Parkrun tomorrow? I am thinking of doing mine but can anyone clarify what you do with the barcode printed off. I have about 8 of them and not sure whether to slip it in my pocket or even how the whole system works...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/01/2019 19:35

Topsy you turn up with your barcode. At the end of the race they click the timer and give you a chip. You then take this chip and your barcode to be scanned and they then link the data (so they use the list of 'clicks' linked to the numbered chip, linked to your barcode) to tell you your time, playing etc (sent by email a few hours after the run)
Seriously, I was actually overawed by the wizardry of it at my first run, i couldn't work out how they knew.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/01/2019 19:38

That should say 'placing' not playing, sorry

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2019 22:18

Get in the funnel asap when you finish the park run cos not everyone obeys the staying in order bit.

I think I need some trail shoes. I run almost entirely off road and it gets a bit slippery when it's wet.

emummy · 12/01/2019 09:58

Definitely kitten, you can never have too many shoes...
Took dog with me to the hilly forest today for her first run since knee surgery last year. We did fartlek, she had a great time! Off for a warm shower now, she's having a well earned snooze

Ran 14.5k this morning, what's that about 9 miles? Anyway, reasonable overall time but smashed my 5km Pb for the second time this year (26.59), and my 10km Pb too (57.34). Felt it in the last 4K though, all uphill and hard work!

SkiMum99 · 12/01/2019 15:59

Family ParkRun this morning, took a lot of effort to make myself go and had a couple of cough splurts as still getting rid of this virus but glad I went. My youngest DD wanted to do it so she could colour in more of her 100k trainer than her older sister 😂love a bit of sibling rivalry to motivate Grin.

SkiMum99 · 12/01/2019 15:59

Fab time bear I only dream of being that fast.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/01/2019 17:10

Thanks skimum, I'm quite amazed myself really, I have been doing dry January and wonder if it's maybe the effect of that? I certainly haven't been doing any intensive training!

IRun4Me · 13/01/2019 12:34

A couple of good runs this weekend plus the shorter ones during the week . Still achieving on the run every day. It is really upping my overall fitness levels.
I’m not doing dry January averagebear but have cut down a lot since the Christmas festivities and think I notice the difference

Track session with club this morning, first proper track session and it was great. I wish I could run that fast on road Shock

Didn’t record it all but think it was about 3 miles in total

mmmgoats · 13/01/2019 16:55

I did 10km on Friday but haven’t been all weekend as I’m feeling a bit run down pardon the pun! 😩 hoping to get back to it tomorrow

Hope you’re all good sounds like people are making good progress!

cheminotte · 13/01/2019 17:07

Hi, can I join.?
I normally run once or twice a week.

emummy · 13/01/2019 17:22

Hi cheminotte, welcome!
Glad you enjoyed the track session Sirzy. Our local athletics track is grass, I would love to have a proper one.
Afternoon run for me today as dd2 had a dance audition in the city today. It was fine, bit windy with the odd shower, but my tummy definitely prefers me to run in the morning! Luckily no emergency stops but it was close! And the audition was successful so I now have to fit her 2 hour Sunday morning rehearsals into my running schedule for the next 3 months. Joy!

220.5 including my miles & mmmgoats'

I'm on fire this month! Running every day, upped my daily distance to try for 300km in RED January.

Itching for a long run, I did a 25km/15m run yesterday, my furthest run ever. Thought I'd be knackered today but managed a non stop 10km this morning plus an easy 5km tonight while the children were at swimming club.

Takes my total to 100 miles so far in January. I'm considering upping my target to 320km/200m in the month.

Thanks for the welcome emummy .

I’ve not been for a run since last weekend when I did park run and got a new PB. It was an anniversary one so they had pacers for every time from 20 to 35 mins. I ran with the guy who was 1 min below my PB and managed to knock 30 seconds off it (my PB that is). He was impressed and suggested I do more longer runs to improve my time.
So next week I’m taking DS (11) and I thought I could run there and back (about 2k). I’m expecting to be a lot slower with him but at least my distance will increase. Have started a separate thread for advice on running with dc, if anyone has any.

emummy · 14/01/2019 10:09

I have done some running with dd2 who is 13. I found it to be a mix of encouraging her to keep going balanced with easing off just before she'd had enough! Depends on your child of course, but mine doesn't do well if too much pressure is on, so I did a lot of cheering her on. A nice bit of cake afterwards was a good incentive too!

TriSkiRun99 · 14/01/2019 12:01

Jelly baby’s & lampposts is how my 7yr old runs ParkRun plus a bacon sandwich at the end Grin she has a jelly baby - I carry 3 - at certain points and we run /walk the lampposts as I’m struggling to get her to run at a steady pace as she prefers to sprint / walk which I find really tiring! My older DD we try to agree a goal time for ParkRun and I help pace her to it and try not to let her walk but just slow done when weary but still carry on. It’s interesting the older one does 6hrs of competitive sport a week training but finds ParkRun “the hardest thing ever!” Smile

Daisydoesnt · 14/01/2019 21:08

FATE where you get your stamina from I do not know - I cant believe you run those distances, and every day!!? If you have some stamina spare please could i have some Smile

A long run for me on Friday after my 5k race on Wednesday night. I think it must have taken more out of me than I'd realised because I felt weirdly out of puff the whole 13km (gee that was fun). But I did it, and I even included THE hill at the 10km mark, which I have never done before. So a tick in the box, but just not a whole lot of fun. Saturday was an easy 5k and then yoga, and Sunday and today I have had as rest days (been on a course). Very much looking forward to pulling on my trainers tomorrow.

My long run this week will be 14k - I am simply adding 1km each week to my long run between now and the end of March for my HM (I have built in a "recovery" week and also tapering at the end). When do you long runners start taking jelly babies with you to eat en route? I have bought some and will consider myself a runner when I take them running with me for the first time. Only partly joking Grin

Daisydoesnt · 14/01/2019 21:10

TriSkiRun99 sorry just seen you take jelly babies with you to motivate your daughter!!

emummy · 14/01/2019 21:42

I take food for runs longer than 10 miles, that's when I feel myself flagging a little. I use clif shot bloks, not a fan of jelly babies personally!

Daisydoesnt · 15/01/2019 07:15

Thanks emummy just looked them up - had no idea such a thing existed! If you were to take the packet in your pocket how many of the cubes might you eat? Thanks

emummy · 15/01/2019 07:35

I usually take one every 15-30 minutes, starting at about an hour into a run or race. I started with one every half hour when I did my first half marathon. I find that for marathons I'm better with one every 15 minutes. Trial and error I guess, but the idea is to start before you get tired so you maintain your energy levels.

FATEdestiny · 15/01/2019 07:40

FATEwhere you get your stamina from I do not know - I cant believe you run those distances, and every day!!?

I'm not finding it easy! My milage this month is a big difference to my normal running. I wanted to really challenge myself for RED January. It's certainly a challenge, I'm feeling the fatigue and have a few aches and niggles.

Only 2 weeks left though. I'm looking forward to February and going back to "only" 5k runs.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/01/2019 07:44

I don't take jelly babies or anything with me. I use electrolytes if my period is due because I read an article in runners world that said it can stop a stitch at that totm (i get a stitch much more frequently then). I actually think the jelly baby effect must be mostly psychological- a JB has about 25 calories so it can't be particularly good fuel, you'd need a fair few to power you through a half marathon. I can see the benefit though of a small reward at certain stages though, my friend carries a little mars bar for halfway. If I'm planning a long run I do prep for it the day before, keeping myself really well hydrated and also eating something like oats last thing at night (I always run on empty in the morning!) to fuel me, as I generally eat a low carb diet. On running forums I've seen soreen malt loaf recommended, cut into little squares as well.
