I’ve copied below from the last thread and I hope you don’t mind me joining you all!

This is the 12th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 10.2 for September

Best wishes

I’m shattered now 😳 it took me ages to warm up today as well but I’m tempted to see if I can do 6km tomorrow but maybe I should stick to 5 for a few until I’m properly back into it

SkiMum99 · 05/01/2019 17:21

Well done goats it was super chilly ParkRun this morning with white sand as there was frost on it brrrr first time I’ve run with gloves on and two long sleeved layers. I was still chilly legs but I was walk/sprinting with my younger daughter she only seems to do sprint or walk I really struggled to keep up with her on the sprints and not get cold on the walks. She did well as not fully over a virus which has gone on for weeks and now has ear ache tonight Sad

I’m hoping if I ever lose some weight I’ll get faster! In theory if you not carrying that weight it’s easier to run faster. My DH is 2stone lighter than me Blush and has a 20min PR time, and 1hr40 Half. I’d dream of getting a 60min 10k, my 5k is 29.30, 10k around 67mins. I’m mid-40s and shortGrin

Total with my ParkRun+ 6k
68

Sirzy · 05/01/2019 17:25

I have stopped trying to get close to my DP he is aLways going to be much faster - he can just make sure my hoody and a drink are at the finish line Grin

BusterTheBulldog · 05/01/2019 21:17

Well done all!

Slept in today so no parkrun (I need a good 90mins before to erm, have a clear system!) I did a 5km though, sciatica was backa nd fitness is shot-lovely!

My husband is lucky enough to me a be a neutral runner with trainers, I spent ages rearching some new ones for him and got them for Christmas. He took 20secs per mile off his 10k time straight away, crazy! I used to be faster than him but now he wipes the floor with me so we don’t run together now. EnvyGrin

My 10km Pb time is about 48mins, and 5km 22.30 however I HATE 10k as a distance, 5km I can just about take the pain of going quick, I find half’s much more enjoyable. I never run 10km as a distance out of choice!

Nice easy long run today, hilly and scenic route along country roads. Didn't have to stop and cough up a lung today so the cold must be finally improving!
My Dh is much fast than me on erratic training. He did his first 10k in July in 54 minutes then 2 months later did one in 50 minutes with very inconsistent training. I got my time down from 62 to 57 minutes over 5 years of slogging. I console myself with knowing that he was exhausted when he ran 8 miles one day while I regularly run 10-12 quite easily. Hoping he never decides to go up in distance!

I was meant to do a social run today but had a rare lie in. Still dragged myself out for a solo 5k, I am awful st running alone my pace is all over the place

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/01/2019 11:53

Strange question but when you run on country roads with no pavement, which side do you run on? I hear and see conflicting advice! I want to start doing some new routes but they almost all involve country roads and I'm nervous after being on pavements all the time

Sirzy · 06/01/2019 11:58

Towards the traffic - unless it’s a blind bend then I cross over so I can be seen

emummy · 06/01/2019 12:06

Exactly what Sirzy said! A fair number of the roads I run on are very narrow so on those it doesn't matter but I move into the middle of the road approaching any sharp corners. I also hop off onto the verge when cars come unless there is a lot of room. Very quiet around here though, I was passed by 3 cars in 10 miles this morning!

FATEdestiny · 06/01/2019 12:13

Towards the traffic, so on the right? I always run in the left, same as cars and bikes. Maybe I should change that!

mmmgoats · 06/01/2019 12:14

Afternoon all, managed another 5km in 33 mins today so pleased with that. think I need new trainers as feeling a bit of impact on the outside of my left leg and up my thigh, I know they’re on their way out but was hoping to get another month or two out of them.
anyone got any recommendations for neutral pavement running trainers? I tend to suffer with my hip when running a lot so generally go for something with a lot of cushioning.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/01/2019 16:41

So on the opposite side to driving?that makes sense. I have none headphones now so at least I can hear traffic. That settles it, long run on Tuesday is out in the country!

DaffoDeffo · 06/01/2019 20:19

Feeling very pleased as I did my first bigger than 5km run today (ok it was only 6.5km/4 miles but still...)

DaffoDeffo · 06/01/2019 20:21

mmmgoats I have similar issues with my hips. I wear nike running shoes as I find them the most supportive. It might be worth going to a running shop and asking them. E.g asics kill my joints as do Adidas for some reason! I'm trying some Brooks running shoes which are good but more expensive than Nike

BusterTheBulldog · 06/01/2019 21:19

mmmgoats I have saucony iso triumph 3s, they are good for hip pain but most definitely not a neutral shoe so may be good to get your gait analysed!

Also run towards the traffic when no pavement.

13 mile LSR for me today. Tough and painful. Hey ho.

Happyinheels · 06/01/2019 21:50

Hi everyone, am I ok to join in please?

I have literally just gone back to running tonight! I've had about a year off after going through a nasty divorce and struggled to adjust to life, 2 kids, working full time etc etc. Sadly running just fell by the wayside. But I find that running is great for my mental health. It's the only time I don't think about anything but surviving the run and pushing on.
I only managed 2.9 miles tonight but it's a start right?!

2.9 miles

mmmgoats · 07/01/2019 08:21

Well done @Daffodeffo

@happyinheels hi! I’m new here too. so sorry you’ve had a bad time but it’s great you are getting back into it now. I agree about mental health I had a pretty rough end of 2017 and start of 2018 and it really helped once I started running again.

Thanks for the tips re trainers I’m wondering whether I need to get my gait analysed again - I had it done about two years ago I think.

Psyching myself up for another 5km today - trying to keep to this for a few more runs before I push myself any further as I’m still feeling a bit knackered after being ill!

Daisydoesnt · 07/01/2019 10:02

Welcome Happyinheels and yes you put it very well: one of the best things about running is that mental blank when you have nothing in your mind but run survival! I also get a similar mental 'stillness' from yoga.

My hilly 6km route for me today, only for the first time I ran it "backwards" ie the other way round than I usually run it. This means there are three shortish but steepish hills towards the end, hmm!! Oddly enough I felt good up the hills and kept up a good pace but on the flat sections I was quite sluggish. There is a 5k race in the next village on Wednesday night which I was hoping to beat my PB, but based on today I don't have a hope.

I know it happens to everyone from time to time but it's weird how you ca't tell when you are going to have a bad run and just have to slog through it? ho hum.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/01/2019 10:13

Just smashed my 5km Pb with 27.52! I was consciously doing some fast sprints, they clearly paid off. Very pleased with that, my parkrun Pb was 28.22 in October.

mmmgoats · 07/01/2019 10:15

@daisydoesnt so true about not being able to tell. Often my best runs are the ones where I feel tired and expect it to be a bad one!

Well done @theneeaveragebear1983 that’s an awesome time!

Daisydoesnt · 07/01/2019 10:20

yay well done @thenewaveragebear1983 !!!! 30secs thats a massive improvement too

BusterTheBulldog · 07/01/2019 14:58

Well done thenewaverage great work!

Easy 3 for me today.

110.72

have added my 3, newaverage’s 3.1 and happyinheels 2.8 to the total.

Topsyturvey10 · 07/01/2019 22:59

Adding my last two runs in.
Does anyone get any of the running magazines that are available? There were 3 I saw - Women's Running, trail running and runners world. I wondered which people found the best and why...

emummy · 08/01/2019 12:04

Congrats on the PB bear that's brilliant!
Well done on your long run daffo.
Welcome Happyinheels, hope you enjoy your running and 2019 is better for you.
Topsy I read them all, I think I maybe like Women's running the best. After a few years they do repeat themselves a little, but I still enjoy them.
Tough tempo run this morning. The cold is still lingering and the first few miles felt like I had concrete in my shoes! After that I felt better though and have ended up quite happy with the pace. Now enjoying coffee
