Hi lovelies! I was just about to join the running thread and saw it was almost full and couldn’t find another
I’ve copied below from the last thread and I hope you don’t mind me joining you all!

This is the 12th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 10.2 for September

Best wishes

I listened to the entire Kevin bridges stand up on my last long run, it's available on Spotify. Very funny. I usually listen to music though, but sometimes I do need something to distract me more so will listen to audio tracks. My particular favourite is one called 'walking the dog' where celebs are interviewed while walking their dogs, or the guilty feminist.

emummy · 16/12/2018 11:18

I don't know how you could run for laughing bear! I listen to Running Commentary, which is 2 comedians running, and struggle to breathe sometimes! I always listen to podcasts, mostly running ones. This morning's was Marathon Talk, it's longer so I save it for my long runs. Beautiful day here, no rain, snow or ice!

Yes I like running commentary too.

I'd LOVE to make a running podcast, me and my friend are always saying it, as we natter a lot on our runs. I'd also love to do one on a kind of 'running with nobodies' theme, as I know a lot of absolutely fascinating people with amazing stories to tell and often think it's exactly the sort of thing I'd listen to- as in interviews with just regular people and not celebrities. Perhaps that should be my new year resolution!!

I also like the true crime type ones or unsolved mystery ones, there's a very good one about a woman who disappeared from a cruise ship.

kitten I did my first half in Feb and got there by building up from 10k adding 1km a week to my long run and two other runs a week, a faster 5k and a mid week 7-8k steady run. I completed the half in 2.5hrs but was shattered and ended up with a niggliy hip issue. I’ve learnt I need to do strength and cross training with it too, or my body can’t “bounce-back” from long runs, finally nailed my second half last Monday Smile and working on doing the Feb Half again next year with more left in the tank than I had this year! I also swim to cross train, but losing 1-2stone would help me more Grin but that’s a whole other thread of peri-menopause hormones and hunger!

Ran 10k this morning before the heavy rain descended again!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/12/2018 15:08

Perhaps I should look at some cross training too then. Would cycling be a good choice?

emummy · 16/12/2018 16:31

Cycling is good as there is no impact. Strength training is also good i.e. exercises like squats, lunges, kettle bell exercise, core strength routines. Strong core and glutes are good for runners, especially if you are increasing your distance, as they help you keep your form and run efficiently even when tired.

DaffoDeffo · 16/12/2018 17:30

I've lost about 17kg running this year and am now at a perfect weight. I am a v slow runner but also v slow to get to 5km. So it took me basically 5 months to go from nothing to 5km (though I injured myself in the middle). I don't think I will ever be able to run more than 10km but I'm so happy I got to 5km as I never thought I would do it (must have tried couch to 5km 3 or 4 times and failed each time!).

SkiMum99 · 19/12/2018 20:07

Ran a dark 7k tonight managed to dodge all the puddles till the 6k mark when a dog walker startled me and splash arrhh cold wet foot. But was grateful to avoid the downpour which hit just as I was finishing.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/12/2018 21:51

Today I went for a bike ride and got lost in a muddy forest. Oops. Ill try to add in some strength exercises. Thanks :)

I need to make sure I don't lose weight. It could be a bit of a balancing act as I lose it easily, so I need to develop some healthy snacks.

AnotherOtter · 20/12/2018 10:10

An easy 10k, a tempo 5 miles (fastest one yet and felt great, shows the difference fuelling well makes), easy 5k and easy 5 miles. Been experimenting with what distances and speeds help my mood the most. I think running on consecutive days and getting properly tired, though with relatively short distances like 5 miles, is what is key for settling agitation for me. Anyone else found things that are particularly good for controlling mood or mental health problems in general?

First run this week thanks to a rotten cold. It felt great, so glad I went. Was supposed to be week 1 of half marathon training, guess that will start on Xmas Eve instead!

It was our boot camp Xmas trip up our local hill this morning, so a short but steep run! 180m of climb in 1 mile - which meant a great speedy run down, until the dog decided to try & trip me up! Luckily she failed and there was hot spiced apple juice afterwards, so it was all worth it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/12/2018 14:05

5k parkrun today. Chose the flattest one around so I could go for my 5k PB and I did it Xmas Grin I'm really proud of myself, knocked 3 mins off my time.

I've eaten a mince pie and a chocolate to celebrate.

FATEdestiny · 22/12/2018 17:28

Awesome 10k today, which gave me 3 PBs!

First sub-60 10km (59.55)
The second 5km was my fastest 5km (29.10)
Highest time continuously in peak heart rate (32 minutes)

Will total my running to date and add to the total when I get chance. Just wanted a place to celebrate my achievement in the meantime (since no one else is really very interested in my running pbs)

emummy · 22/12/2018 18:09

Brilliantly FATE! Well done!

SkiMum99 · 22/12/2018 18:18

Great PBs fate I’d love to get close to 60min 10k, 66 has been my closet, I did get a 29min 5k this year just once at ParkRun so I just need to keep working on it. It was a festival PR today so my Xmas leggings were on.

315.4

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/12/2018 21:12

Those are great times. I'd love a sub 60 10k.

emummy · 23/12/2018 11:07

Nice easy run, beautiful frosty morning. Hilly route but March's half will be hilly so can't avoid it really!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/12/2018 11:16

Just done trust10 at Hanbury hall worcs, which was my first ever trail run. Rather squelchy in places, trainers are soaked! 10km in 1.01, which considering I started at the back of the scrum and there were a few minutes wasted waiting for gates and stiles, I reckon I came in just under 60. I hadn't anticipated how much harder it is to run on uneven ground as well.

CalmConfident · 23/12/2018 23:33

Rejoining thread...!!! Lots of new people here, I am plodding round parkrun still but ready to get back on it in 2019. Peri-meno seems to be creeping in...

Fate my parents are mitts/Derby border would love to hear some hints of offroad routes as that is my fave running.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/12/2018 10:01

Ran 6.5 miles today. Bit of a problem with pain at the back of my leg above my knee for much of the route. Any remedies?
It was quite hard work. Partly because I'd set spotify to give me nice Christmas music and it gave me awful american crooning instead. argh! I need to plan things better.

emummy · 24/12/2018 10:36

Tempo run today, really pleased with the pace as I thought I'd be a lot slower with this cold still hanging on. Beautiful morning, definitely below freezing, well wrapped up today!
Pain the hamstrings can come from different things Kitten, make sure you stretch well after running, foam rollers are also good and maybe look into strengthening exercises. If it persists it may be worth seeing a sports physiology for assessment as sometimes it can be a sign of a weakness or tightness somewhere else that needs sorting.

346.1 - me, Kitten and bear's miles

emummy · 24/12/2018 10:36

Sports physio that should say, sorry!

FATEdestiny · 24/12/2018 11:16

@CalmConfident have a look for [[https://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/for-you/parks-and-nature-conservation/walking-and-cycling/erewash-valley-trail/ the
Erewash trail]]. 30 miles of off-road paths that often intersect, so you can easily find different 10km circuits, or 10 miles, or HM distances that loop round. A very versatile and gorgeous route to run.

I especially like that it is mostly flat, since it follows the various waterways in the area. Also the paths are maintained so although it gets muddy in wet weather, it is not like running through fields or bare ground.
