I’ve copied below from the last thread and I hope you don’t mind me joining you all!

This is the 12th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 10.2 for September

Best wishes

To & from boot camp today, now to scrub the house before my mum gets here! That combined with an essay due for the OU is making this a very busy week.

How's the weather with you all? Damp & chilly up here today, with possible snow on the way! Steady run this morning and now going out for coffee with my mum.

It's cold and dry here (Worcs) but I've had a cold so haven't run since Monday. I may go this evening (run to circuits class) depending how I feel, but as my foot is still playing up I thought I'd take the opportunity to rest it for a few days.

FATEdestiny · 13/12/2018 10:59

My favourite run along the canal path is drying out and significantly less muddy, so much drier here (Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire boarder). Very cold though. Had to go immediately upstairs into a hot shower upon getting home from this morning's run, to avoid The Shivers. No time for my usual steaming coffee first.

I get a very cold nose when running. But if I wear a buff across my face, my breathing steams up my glasses. So I can't win.

DaffoDeffo · 13/12/2018 13:39

did 5km yesterday in the gym - getting a bit faster as can run at 9km/h now :)

I run without my glasses fate. I can't see a thing!

AnotherOtter · 13/12/2018 14:40

Two 5 mile runs in the cold. Only just above freezing here and couldn't run on Monday due to ice. Thanks for the advice about ice, emummy. Looks like useful kit! *

We've got snow and ice weather warnings for Saturday and Sunday morning. Hoping to get a run tomorrow morning and Sunday afternoon but the fates and weather gods may think that is amusing.

Super windy 5.5k this morning, I ran with my new buff thing around my ears and head kept my head headphones in. Had legs of lead though after Monday’s long run and pace was way off for a short run but the fresh air did me good. May squeeze in another quick 5km after school drop off tomorrow as weather looks horrendous for Sat.

It's blustery here and there's a distinct polar chill to the air. Just done 5km, planning my long run tomorrow afternoon as we are at a wedding Saturday and likely to be hungover Sunday!

SkiMum99 · 14/12/2018 14:51

Quick 5k this morning as I doubt given the forecast there will be much chance to run this weekend.

Well the worst of the stormy weather seems to be to the west of us, it's dry and windy here, quite cold but no snow or freezing rain. I think it will be wet late so happy to have got my miles in this morning.

I do love this thread. It really keeps me going. Getting quicker but also finding it easier and more enjoyable!

I volunteered at parkrun this morning doing the barcode scanning. It was good but I can’t remember the last time I was that cold! It’s a very exposed parkrun.

I walked home then went for a 4.4 mile run. Should have done an extra 0.3 as I’m up to 799.7 for the year.

SkiMum99 · 15/12/2018 16:51

No chance of me doing ParkRun today it was full on stormy conditions and torrential rain coming in sideways ALL day...tomorrow doesn’t look much better now Sad was hoping to get out Sunday for a 10k.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/12/2018 21:48

Can I join in please, signed up to a half marathon for the first time in the spring. I'm quite clueless as to what I'm doing. Not really sure where to start. At the moment I run 5k 2-3 times a week in about 32 minutes but need to start training I guess.

emummy · 15/12/2018 21:54

Welcome OhYouBadBadKitten! There are plenty of training plans online, or just work out your own plan where you gradually increase the length of your long run. Good luck!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/12/2018 22:04

thanks! :) I've found a bupa one that seems quite simple. It seems to do mostly 30-40 min runs with one increasingly long one each week. Does that seem about right?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/12/2018 22:35

I'm training for a half and my strategy come January will be 3x runs a week (one speed 40 mins, one mid length tempo eg 10-12k, one 10 mile+) plus 2 strength sessions (eg weights or swimming). I currently run 35-40k a week over 5 or 6 runs.

I've done a half in 2hr7 and I'd like to get it under 2hours so that's my goal. My training plan will be as much to do with my nutrition, improving my sleep, and resting as it will be about the running as I actually am fairly confident I can do the distance, I'm just concerned I destroy myself in the process!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/12/2018 22:39

cripes! I'm at 15k a week, nowhere near you. My goal is to finish without dieing. Grin

Harmonyrays · 15/12/2018 22:42

Hi, is anyone running to loose weight?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/12/2018 22:56

Hah, I hope I didn't come across as some Uber fit gym bunny!! I only started running in January!

The key is definitely increasing overall weekly/monthly distance gradually, (to avoid injury). So if you're doing 15k a week over 3 runs, you're looking at maybe increasing by 10% a week (in total), but also varying this so you do a longer run at a steady pace and maybe a few shorter ones to build your speed. I've also seen training plans that say to increase your overall distance by 1km for every time you run a week (so run 3x a week, increase by 3km a month), but also what you'd need to factor in is increasing your longest run to be almost half M distance (although I know lots of people who've only done 15-16 in training but still done a half)

I'm definitely a long distance endurance runner by nature- I rarely sprint, but provided I get a good podcast on the go I can just go steady for hours. I've built this over the year though by doing consistent 5-8km runs daily and throwing in some hills and longer distances at weekends.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/12/2018 22:59

Harmony I have lost weight running (about 3 stone this year) but you absolutely need to control your diet as well. Running makes you very hungry, so unless you're controlling your food intake then it would be very easy to just eat back what you burn (and some).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/12/2018 07:26

That's really helpful bear thank you :) I'll have a look later and see what could work. I need to find some podcasts I think!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/12/2018 08:59

Couldn't even find my headphones never kind any podcasts Grin Lovely 6km run, I thought I was doing a nice easy pace but it turned out to be my usual pace.

What do people do about muddy trainers? I'm running mostly off road to reduce impact on my joints.

FATEdestiny · 16/12/2018 09:23

Hi, is anyone running to loose weight?

Me @Harmonyrays! Well, I started off running for weight loss (have lost 8 stone in 2018) but now run because I love running. Exactly as thenewaveragebear1983 said though, most weight loss comes from your diet not exercise.

My New Years Resolution was to "Become Healthy in 2018", rather than lose weight (I was 17st 8.5) and that's where running came from for me. A healthy heart requires regular exercise. I ran alongside a healthy, low calorie diet.

Hello @OhYouBadBadKitten. My husband runs with the Nike Plus podcasts - it's a running app. I prefer to listen to audiobooks. I use the library app for my audio books so they cost me nothing.

I run off road usually too. On paths though, not fields, but still get muddy in wet weather. My trainers live on top of the boiler when I get home. Then they dry out between runs and I whack them against a wall outside before each run to knock the dry mud off.
