Augh my glutes!

My friend has pusuaded me into the 100 squats a day challenge. It only takes me 5 minutes, what harm could it do? I though.

Hahaha!

Day 3 and I got up this morning stiff as a board. Couldn't even bend to sit on the toilet! So I figured a run should loosen me up. It did, but spent the first two miles running like I was astride a horse, or something! Not pleasant at all. Must either make sure I stretch better post-squats. Or chill out a bit and ease up on the squattage.

Sorry fate that did make me laugh. Hope the glutes are feeling less sore and more toned.
Yes buster I have a waist lead. I find it easier as I don’t have to hold the lead in my hand when running. We’ve only had a couple of episodes when he’s decided to go the other side of a lamppost to me - much to the amusement of any passerbys.

emummy · 11/11/2018 08:26

Oh FATE that sounds painful! Hope it's better soon and you get flutes of steel!
Good steady run this morning, misty & sunny, very atmospheric

Ooof fate that does sound painful!

emummy · 11/11/2018 10:37

Sorry, flutes of steel?! Obviously I meant glutes! Late night followed by an early morning clearly doesn't agree with me!

SkiMum99 · 11/11/2018 11:05

100squats a day is hardcore! I do 100 a week 😂that’s been enough to strengthen mine. Had 9.6m run this morning got struck down by dodgy tum at 6m Blush luckily the public toilets were open! Not had such a bad case of runners tum before. Note to self don’t eat curry the night before a long run day!

AnotherOtter · 11/11/2018 12:42

That sounds like a nightmare, Ski! I live in dread of dodgy guts and bladder.

Two steady 5 mile runs from me since my last post. Glad I bought a light rain jacket as it is pissing down. At least it is a bit warmer with the cloud cover.

I ran 6 miles yesterday - started listening to a podcast prequel to Waking the Dead. Really enjoyed it!

Ran 6 miles today for My Poppy Run. I am enjoying it more now it's more of a choice than training for a race. It is difficult when you are not 100% though. Do you still try to run through a cold or recovery from a virus or do you wait it out knowing first runs back will be really difficult?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/11/2018 18:36

Staying I’ve had a cold virus for about a week and I’ve run through it, although it’s been hard work and I didn’t do a long one this weekend. I see it as ‘money in the bank’ a bit, as in if I can run at 75% health, I will feel the benefits when I’m well again. However, i wouldn’t have run if I wasn’t up to it (as in bad flu or something)

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 11/11/2018 18:37

Thanks. I have Crohn's disease so often have stomach issues which can leave me a bit wobbly when I run but I don't want to let it beat me.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/11/2018 18:44

Staying I suppose it’s different if you have an actual condition, rather than just a cold. I was always very prone to ear nose throat type infections, but after starting running I Had absolutely none for about 8 months. The last few months I’ve struggled with my diet and have been having more sugar than before, and I’ve now had two quite long lasting bugs (this cold has lasted 8+ days). Not sure if it’s just coincidence, or the reintroduction of sugar, or just the effect of dieting and running hard finally taking its toll on me?

BusterTheBulldog · 12/11/2018 16:20

8 miles from me yest. Half marathon planned for sun, so will be taking it fairly easy this week.

Short steady run in the chilly sunshine this morning.
staying I take my hat off to you, running with something like Crohns cannot be easy. I guess the main principle is the old 'listen to your body' - if you don't feel so good, reduce the intensity or duration of a run, maybe introduce a walk-run strategy for those days. Good luck with your running

Has anyone ever experienced metatarsal pain? I think I may have a condition called Metatarsalgia, I originally thought I had aggravated my bunion doing my longer runs, but now I’m getting this strange burning heat sensation down my metatarsal. Just wondered if anyone had any experience of it? I’m going to have to take a few days off running aren’t I?

BusterTheBulldog · 13/11/2018 16:46

I fractured a metatarsal newwave, rest (not too much in fairness), physio and a sensible recovery training plan helped it recover.

It might be worth a trip to physio as pain there can be many different things hidden in that area. Do you see a podiatrist for your bunion? Seeing one regularly has improved my running so much!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/11/2018 16:57

Buster no, and I really should. It’s never been painful before, although I can feel the joint getting more inflamed since running. This pain is new this week, it’s only with a bit of googling that I’ve managed to self diagnose as this! Did you get referred to your podiatrist through the gp or did you have to go private? My concern with gp is that they’ll surely just say to stop running won’t they?

BusterTheBulldog · 13/11/2018 21:28

I got referred to physio by doctors (doctors worse than useless!), and then physio recommended i also see podiatrist. I just paid for that-£50 for first session-I was in there for 3 hours!! Blush and now it’s £35 every 6 weeks. It really is one of the best health related things I’ve done, high heels no longer cripple me and I’m not embarrassed to unleash my bare feet on other people anymore!

My physio also didn’t recommend stopping running, just to slow down and concentrate on form and also do their exercises. It really worked wonders!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/11/2018 21:39

Buster thanks. I’m going to give it two more days off running but will phone the doc tomorrow. I might look into some insoles as well, plus I think it’s time for new trainers for me as the soles of mine are now smooth in places. I will phone around the podiatrists but frankly I cannot really afford private treatment so I may be stuck.

IRun4Me · 14/11/2018 10:56

I haven’t had that specific pain newaveragebear but last year had to change my type of trainers and get ones which were more cushioned and supportive. My feet became very painful which actually stopped me running for a few weeks - I think basically I was losing my natural foot cushioning (another joy of getting older). Since I changed my trainers it’s been fine.

Lovely run this morning to and from my exercise group.

Just a short run today, experimenting with running 5 days a week by running to and from boot camp.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/11/2018 11:53

I’m booked at the dr for tomorrow, so I’ll see what they say. No run for me today, that’s the longest I’ve gone without running all year- which probably goes some way to explaining my very painful feet!

FATEdestiny · 14/11/2018 12:40

I'm prone to metatarsalgia. I had it really bad once and I think the cause was a very slight ankle twist (from kerbs when pavement running) caused me to hold my gait differently, which moved the pain to the balls of my feet on the opposite foot.

That time I took 4 days off running (I usually run daily). I added ankle/foot support when I restarted - bought from Decathlon.

Now, I can spot the metatarsalgia coming on and can usually stretch it out before it gets bad enough to affect my running. My mum is a Pilates and Yoga buff, she gave me loads of stretches to try. Have a look here:

www.livestrong.com/article/366409-foot-exercises-for-metatarsal-pain/

The most simplest is toe walking (I walk on my tip toes around the house whenever I think about it, multiple times every day) and heel lifts - which I do any time in standing around and waiting. For exams when watching the kids at football / swimming / netball, I'll be stood there doing heel lifts and tip toe balancing.

Oh, and Aldi currently have two cushion insoles in their middle isle for £2.99. They are great.

gel* cushion insoles

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/11/2018 13:42

Thanks fate, that’s really interesting. Last night I sat and ‘clawed’ my toes gently back and forth which definitely seemed to ease the tightness there. I hope I have caught it in enough time that it might recover. Bought new trainers today (although without a specialist running shop for miles around I was very limited) and some gel insoles for my regular shoes for comfort. Booked a doctors app for tomorrow. Thanks everyone for all your advice!
