A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

I have Fit Bit Blaze and I use that to track runs both outside and treadmill

LadyLance · 23/01/2018 14:13

So I managed the 3 miles/5k today, in 43 minutes. I have no idea about times! I like using a treadmill though, as I can pace myself, whereas if I go road running inevitably I start too quickly and struggle towards the end. I also find treadmill running psychologically easier as I can watch the numbers go up. The best thing about today's run is it apparently burnt over 300kcal, which is nearly 100 kcal more than my standard gym workout!

The bad news is that my trainers have suddenly started to rub on the inside of both feet. They are 4+ years old, but they were fine in the summer and fine before I went skiing, so I'm going to investigate my options this afternoon. If I can get some new ones today then the plan is to try another 5k tomorrow morning in the gym. If I can't, I'll probably put the running on hold and do rowing+weights tomorrow.

Adding on my miles makes the thread total 877.5

sayhellotothelittlefella · 23/01/2018 17:45

Today was meant to be an Orange Theory Fitness session ( with a shortish treadmill element ) and then a 4 mile easy run. However I've got a cold and although I feel ok dealing with everyday stuff I really struggled pushing myself at the gym so decided to just leave it there and not do the extra 4 miles. Therefore only managed 2 miles on the treadmill

I did a 5k while the kids were at swimming lessons, got a horrible dry cough at the moment. No cold just a really irritating cough, so that not helping my running. Was supposed to be at club tonight but couldn’t face it Sad

Training all going well and think half on 4th will be doable! It's just walking out of the door and running is easy! Did a 40 minute recovery run today after 13 k on Sunday. It's definitely getting easier!! Good luck all:)

Hope you feel better soon sayhello and pink - it’s good to rest up and recover a bit I think. You just ‘know’ when you’re not up to it don’t you?

Club run of 8.4 miles and 3 yest from me.

So I managed to get some new trainers and tested them out with a 30 minute run today and they seem good. Did 2.4 miles which felt like more effort than yesterday. Hope everyone struggling with illness feels better soon!

That brings the thread total to 901.3

sayhellotothelittlefella · 24/01/2018 17:26

Race pack for the 4th arrived in the post today. Eeeek! Have you got yours tricky? Determined to get out and at least do some running tomorrow. Even if it's a run/walk

Whyareusernamessotricky · 24/01/2018 18:45

Not yet sayhello! I got an email today saying that it's on the way and I'm getting excited (maybe wrong word!) now! I've followed the BUPA beginners' plan pretty closely and reading this thread has meant that I'll go and do my tempo run tonight. I remember Emummy's advice about turning it into a habit and it's definitely easier now I'm used to 4 runs a week.
Keep running!

emummy · 25/01/2018 10:24

Enjoy your new trainers LadyLance! Will be getting a new pair in March/April, can't wait!
Nice steady run in sunshine this morning. Dh on day off so persuaded him to walk the dog so I could do a different route. It was very relaxing.

Got my 4 mile tempo run done this morning. It wasn't too bad considering I have a cold.
I haven't seen the BUPA programme tricky I googled loads before I started and then decided to just drop into week 4 of the 14 week programme from women's running that I used last time. It sounds very similar to yours.

LadyLance · 25/01/2018 13:34

sayhello I've just googled the program you're using and it looks great as it allows for more variety than a lot of running plans I've seen.

Today is going to be a rest day as I went for a two hour horse ride this morning, but I'm going to try to fit in a workout/run tomorrow at the gym and hopefully an outdoor run at the weekend if it's not too wet.

Fitting in any running next week is going to be a challenge, but after that I think I will make a proper start on a training plan and maybe enter a race!

Good three miles on treadmill this morning.

Planning a 10km first thing tomorrow, will do it in gym if it's raining.

emummy · 25/01/2018 20:34

Great running going on, well done all! Hope those who are injured are fixed soon. I'm having my physio biomechanicsl assessment tomorrow so that will be enough running I think! Then off to Edinburgh to meet old friends, hoping to get a run along the canal on Sunday morning if not too hungover!

RunningAddict · 26/01/2018 08:22

Done a mixture of treadmill and outdoor runs over the last few days. Really looking forward to the lighter mornings, struggling with getting up in the mornings now.

Hope everyone with injury’s recover soon, enjoy Edinburgh emummy

Good 10km this morning, faster than last Friday.

4m yesterday and 4 today, planning a 15mile on sun which will be last long run before 30k.

Lovely and sunny when went out-always helps Smile

BusterTheBulldog · 26/01/2018 16:49

Forgot to add miles

familygermsareok · 26/01/2018 21:18

Great to hear about everyone's different runs.
Have fun in Edinburgh emummy.

I've got 4.8 and 8.2 to add from runs on Mon and Thurs.

Have got a trail relay race going over some hills tomorrow with club. Bit worried as haven't managed proper recce, first attempt went wrong in thick mist and on second try snow was falling heavily so abandoned.
Looks fairly straightforward on map, but I'm not the best with a compass and rain and gales forecast, aargh.
Plan B is to just find a confident-looking runner to follow..... How hard can it be.........??

Good luck familygerms - don't get lost Grin
Terrible 9 mile run for me today. Probably one of my worst ever. I planned a lovely route taking me through the historic city I live in and out into the country but everything went wrong. Phone died so no music, no Strava, no time. Then my left knee started hurting at only 4 miles ( I can usually get to about 7 before any issue) then my right knee started at 6 miles. By the time I got to the final mile I was really struggling - it took everything I had not to walk ( although my hobbling could barely pass for running )I'm starting to think I might not make the full 13 without walking in March and I was really hoping to make it a 2 hr HM. Sad
Booking in for a biomechanics assessment tomorrow and definitely getting some new trainers to see if that helps

It was just one of those days sayhello! Put it down to a bad run and forget about it. I had exactly the same last week and said to dh I couldn't get past 8 miles and was going to pull out. He said do a few more before you decide and when o didn't feel the pressure of having to make it, I did a far longer run, felt good and far more positive! We can definitely get round and just a blip!

Didn't manage to run yesterday but I have been for a run this morning. Only 2 miles but it was on roads and felt ok, so that's good and I'm loving my new trainers! I find it hard to pace myself when not on a treadmill so was pretty pleased with today.

Hi all, welcome Anawi, a couple of weeks of going regularly and I bet you'll get the love for it again!

Parkrun this morning - 19 seconds away from my PB... grrr. Have been doing some interval runs to try to get my speed up a bit but probably need to keep it up a bit longer before I see the results.

Anyone got any tips on how not to be completely exhausted later in the day after a run?? Nap probably not very realistic with the kids about and not sure I'm very good at sleeping in the day anyway.
