A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

Do any of you have any advice about toes? I have a black nail which is now really getting sore, not when I run, but if my little boy touches it for example, it’s agony! Does this mean my trainers are too small do you think? They don’t feel too small. I’ve tried a fungal nail paint but it hasn’t done anything really.

BusterTheBulldog · 16/09/2018 10:54

Brilliant work emummy!!!

Hi topsy, I personally prefer long leggings to capris, and like a bit of compression. I don’t think you can go too far wrong with vests and tees these days. Maybe get a thin long sleeved hi vis top for winter running just in case it starts to get colder. Even supermarket ones seem to be pretty good- I know Morrison’s does longer length vests.

The Nike website is pretty good for always having sale items on, and I really like sportsshoes.com (doesn’t just sell shoes!) for bargains on last season items.

10k obstacle course run from me yest. I planned to do a 10k road race today but my toe nail (and some skin!) has fallen off and it’s a bit painful. Anyone had similar?! I’ve lost one before but always had new nail growing underneath, where as nothing at all with this Confused.

I also have a black toe nail with three others starting to colour too. I asked a podiatrist about it and she said it was very common in walkers and runners. Could try going up half a size in shoes but it wouldn't make a difference if the original shoes were already the right size and increases the risk of blisters if your foot slips in the shoe. Some black nails will fall off and some will stay attached. Either way, a new nail will grow up from the nail bed and it most likely will be thickened for a while so be very careful when trimming it. Can buy dressings from pharmacies if the area is raw or you want some padding. Ask to speak to the pharmacist for advice. Essentially black nails are harmless but a nuisance and unsightly. Obviously if you have diabetes or circulatory disease (eg, peripheral vascular disease) then you should be going to your podiatrist for proper advice.

emummy · 16/09/2018 12:00

I find it also helps with toenails to keep them well trimmed. My running shoes are also always a size up and I have managed not to get a black toenail for 2 years now! Good socks must help too I think.
On another note, did anyone see the Berlin marathon today? Kipchoge set a new world record - 2:01:39! That's 8 minutes faster than my half! It was amazing to watch and he is such a lovely man.

IRun4Me · 16/09/2018 12:17

Well done emummy
I’ve been lucky so far and not suffered black toes. I also go half a size up on running shoes.
I did see an article about different ways to lace running shoes so it changes the pressure on the foot. Might be worth looking in to that?

Thanks all! I’m going to try and get an urgent appointment at podiatrist tomorrow, if not may pop to minor injuries as i can’t walk / drive at the mo! I think whatever is in it needs to be drained out (bleurgh).

My running shoes are defo the right size, I also have ‘specialist’ socks but I’ll checj all the seams actually, and the lacing could be a good one to try too. might pop to pharmacy now to try and get some better padding plasters.
Always something!!

TheMendedDrum · 16/09/2018 14:54

I was here earlier in the year then dropped off. I've got a half lined up for mid October which I'm really excited and nervous about. Did a hilly 6 miles yesterday which went well but I'm worried I'm behind where I should be on distance. I can do 8/9 miles OK on a not too hilly route but not gone further.... I use the cross trainer to try and build my stamina. I'm not bothered about time, I just want to enjoy it and not feel I've let myself down IYSWIM? Any advice?

I love this thread. So inspiring!

emummy · 17/09/2018 10:09

I think for my first half I went up to 10 miles in training and was fine on the day. With the cross training helping you I think you'll be ok. Good luck!

FATEdestiny · 17/09/2018 12:38

TheMendedDrum, do you run the whole distance or run/walk?

I find a ratio of 30 min run then 2 mins walk works for me. It was by having this 2 min walk after every half hour that got me from 5k to 10k then from 10k to 10 miles. Although I've not run a half matathon, I know I could just by adding on an extra 2 min walk / 30 min run at the end.

TheMendedDrum · 17/09/2018 18:10

Thanks emummy and FATE. I'm running the whole way FATE. I find if I walk, that's the beginning of the end to me. But I like your rational about tactically walking... something to think about.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/09/2018 20:01

I’m hoping to break the 10 mile this week so I might try the strategic walking method! My current longest is 14km.

FATEdestiny · 17/09/2018 20:57

I run using Audiofuel coaching podcasts on Spotify. The coaching in the long runs advise the walk breaks every half hour. The attached is my usual long run. It has two minutes walks built into the program at 33-35 minutes, 60-62 minutes and 93-95 minutes.

Daisydoesnt · 18/09/2018 08:13

hello everyone I am hoping I can join this thread! I started running in June and rapidly became completely hooked. I work for myself, and for various business reasons am more or less not working till the end of the year. I decided that something positive was going to come out of this time, and that I was going to get fit! I have built up very slowly, and did my first Parkrun on Saturday. That was great fun.

I'm not a naturally sporty/ athletic person (I was dreadful at sport at school) so I am getting such a buzz about feeling I can do this. I would like to continue to improve my 5km time (my Parkrun was in 32mins) but my main goal is a 10km race which is held in my village in the spring. It would be the most enormous personal achievement to be able to complete that.

I seem to be doing OK at increasing my distances (I am doing it very, very gradually) but do seem to be a bit one-paced. Any tips on that, or good places to read up? There is so advice much online I don't know where to start.

emummy · 18/09/2018 10:18

Welcome Daisy, glad you are enjoying your running and doing so well. It is so easy to end up doing all your runs at the same pace isn't it?! You can mix it up with some speed sessions. You can do fartlek, where after doing a warm up jog you do spells of faster running. You can run fast between 2 lampposts, then jog till you recover then do it again, however many times you feel.
Or you can do intervals- say jog for 10 minutes then do 2 minutes faster and two minutes slow jog/walk and repeat that 3 or more times as you get stronger. Hills are also good - you can do hill repeats where you run hard up and jog or walk down, or just do a route that has hills on it. If you can it's also nice to go off road for a change of scene and a different challenge.
Interval session for me this morning; I am targeting our local cross country race in 8 weeks so it's out to the hilly forest roads again! Very wet today but still mild so it was nice.

Daisydoesnt · 18/09/2018 19:16

emummy thank you that is really, really helpful. You've just told me what I have been trying to work out for the last 3 weeks!! I think I will try and work one interval session and one hill session into each week, and then do a long run on a Saturday (if I'm not Parkrun-ing). I only run 3 times a week which suits me as I go to yoga on two of the days in between. Does that sound like an OK plan??

thank you again. Tomorrow I am going to do my hilly run, and hope that it's not to wet & windy!!

emummy · 18/09/2018 20:09

Sounds good! If it is too much you could do the hills and intervals on alternate weeks and do a steady run for your 3rd, but see how you get on. Good luck tomorrow, I'm supposed to be at boot camp in the park. Under big trees. Should be interesting!

Daisydoesnt · 18/09/2018 20:37

emummy got it , thank you that makes sense. And it’s nice just to do an easy run for the first one of the week! Thanks again for your advice. Have a good session tomorrow.

RocketPockets · 18/09/2018 23:01

Hi all, looking for a bit of advice. I've got my first half on 7th October and I've got my final long run on Friday before I start my taper down & I've got pain on the outer arch of my left foot. It gets easier if I stretch out but wondering if it could be because my calls are tight? I don't particularly want to go to the dr because I'm worried they'll tell me not to run and I'd rather take it super easy after this week than not run at all and have to withdraw from the half (charity entry). Any ideas what this could be?
Also I'm really struggling mentally because I feel I put so much effort into my running and my friend who I run with on and off just finds it so much easier than I do. She ran twice last week and before that not for a few weeks and then today did her first 10 Miles in preparation for the half and now is tapering down. She was a good 10-15 mins faster than I could even think of doing and seems to be able to have weeks off at a time and just pick it back up again. I know I shouldn't compare myself to her but she's the only person in real life I talk running with regularly as we used to run together regularly (she's always been faster than me). Any wise words to get me out of this funk and in a better mind set?
One last thing (sorry for the mammoth post!!) I'm due to be on my period the week of the half. Is it worth going to the dr to get the pill to delay this or will it not have much affect? I haven't done a long run on my period so nothing to compare to.
Thank you in advance for any replies and for reading all that!!

After all that I forgot to add my total!

Podiatrist visit for me today, lost toenail was deemed not as bad as it could have been due to my salt water soaking and bandaging, may not come back though as cutical gone too 😬 Already able to run again. She also removed 10 corns and apparently my feet and knees are out of line (always wondered how my tights went on wonky!) which is going to end in knee / hip surgery if I don’t start to sort out.

Easy 4 yest and run club 7 tonight.

emummy · 19/09/2018 10:45

Hope you get that sorted Buster, sorry about your toenail.
Rocket do you have a foam roller? They can help you sort out tight muscles after running. If you can, a visit to a sports physio would help with sorting it out. Otherwise maybe ease off a bit this week, do extra stretches and massage and see how it goes.
Very wet boot camp this morning, luckily not too windy yet but it's picking up now.

RocketPockets · 19/09/2018 11:24

Thank you emummy I'll try that!
Did almost 7k today at roughly race pace. Very very windy which hindered things slightly and my foot didn't hurt while running but it hurts now. So unsure what's going on with that! Glad it's ok while running though, I'm thinking it may be because my trainers are more supportive. Perhaps.

IRun4Me · 19/09/2018 12:23

A very breezy but comfortable 5 this morning.
buster glad the toenail sorted and hope you manage to get your foot/knee alignment sorted.
rocket sorry not much advice but try not to compare yourself to others, I know that is hard though. Remember it is for you and your running. I have in the past gone and got the pill just for a half but also not bothered. It depends on how you feel if your energy levels will be affected and also the faff of actually having your period on race day.
