A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

rocket I know how you feel, all my runner friends are faster than me and Dh hardly trains but can run a 10k 7 minutes faster than me. I read stories of people who just ran to see how fast they could go and got amazing times - this never happens to me! At the end of the day, we have to just be proud of ourselves and what we achieve; trying to be your best you is better than trying to beat someone else. Good luck in your race.

I did my first "hill" session this morning; not sure if it was hard enough, but I enjoyed it. I did a warm up jog then ran up the hill behind our house to the corner, and then jogged/walked back down. I did that four times. Each "there & back" is 1km and the climb is 20m. The hill actually goes even steeper after the corner but only for another say 250m. I am going to aim to be able to get to the top of that, if only once on my next session!

Sounds good Daisy, is it a worrying sign if you enjoy hill reps?! I quite enjoy them too, must mean we are real runners!
Easy run this morning in the sunshine, jumping over fallen branches from the storm, great fun

Oh I definitely wouldn't call myself a real runner! Not yet anyway. I enjoyed it in the sense of "I can't believe I can run up this hill....!" and then I did it three more times. Just revelling in the feeling of being fitter.
You sound very athletic jumping over branches!

I’m a hill junkie too, I live in a very hilly area with some really long hills and steep ones so once a week at least I do a really strenuous hilly run! Love them!

Hello everyone! I'm tentatively joining this thread (though I have been lurking for a while) as I am just about to take the plunge and click to confirm my entry into a half marathon in roughly a month's time.

I've never done a proper race before so it seems like a big deal. Is it stupid to skip doing the shorter distances first or is it fine so long as I'm capable? I'm quite woefully ignorant about all the technical stuff so will appreciate any and all advice re. training, preparation, nutrition etc etc. from all you experts. I have learnt a lot just from lurking here.

you can do any race distance you choose Irvina, I guess it's more common to work up as 5k seems less scary. Go for it! Half marathons are my favourite distance. The more you run the more you will learn about what stuff works for you and how your body responds to different types of training. There's no one size fits all, it's trial and error. Where is your race?

At Eton school actually- on a whim I just googled halfs in October, found this one and it happens to be the flattest in the UK which seemed perfect for my first time!

Started couch to 5k in May and I've only been running longer distances than that for 2 weeks but my body seems to be naturally adapted to it or something. I did a 12mile run on Monday and loved it so just think I'm suited to distance- not that my times are good but I'm not bothered about winning or anything (obviously).

Not a race or event. Just me on the roads local to me. I wanted to see if I could do it, and I did it!

Irvina I started couch to 5k in April and I'm doing my first half in 2 weeks time!

I did my final 10 Miles yesterday and next week will begin my taper down, I managed to knock a whole minute off my previous time despite not really trying to, doing a slower first 10k & having the most incredible head wind!! Felt really really good and really proud of myself. My fastest km was number 9 as I got a sudden boost, I've also discovered I can not tolerate gels and jelly beans are much better for me. Does anyone know if regular jelly beans are fine to use or if it's better for them to be energy ones?

Ooh hey Rocket, it's good to find someone at basically the same stage as I am. It sounds like you've done amazingly and also like you may be a tad bit better informed than I am so I might ask you lots of questions and take advantage of your newbie distance runner wisdom if that's ok?

How are you timing yourself to know each km so accurately?

Are you following a specific training programme and if so which one and how did you choose? If not, is there an accepted time period before a half and the last practice "long run" you do?

Are you aiming for a specific time or just keeping track out of interest?

What do you do in terms of nutrition (when training/ before and during the actual race)?

What different things have you experimented with (food/drink wise and technique/style etc) that you would recommend others to try?

Sorry for the barrage- no pressure to answer them all (or any for that matter).

Anyone else feel free to answer too btw- I will be very appreciative!

Hi lovelies! I was just about to join the running thread and saw it was almost full and couldn’t find another so I have started a new one, I hope you don’t mind :)

I’m very slowly running and have done just over 10 miles this month with the hope of finishing c25k in a few weeks and running a half marathon next spring!

How are you timing yourself to know each km so accurately?

I use a Fitbit (the Charge 2), which tells me my split times for each km.

Are you following a specific training programme and if so which one and how did you choose? If not, is there an accepted time period before a half and the last practice "long run" you do?

I use Audiofuel podcasts which have coaching similar to the C25K podcasts.

I generally do a long run (10k, 10 miles or like yesterday a HM) at the weekend, every weekend. Then do a 5k every week day.

Are you aiming for a specific time or just keeping track out of interest?

I spent time focusing on my 5K time, when I was trying to break into sub-30s. Once I'd done it though I don't consider time, I just run. Similarly I'm currently working on a sub-60 10K time so try for fast paced 10k runs. However for longer runs, I'm so new to running that I'm just impressed with finishing a 10mile or HM. So time is irrelevant.

I'll try to answer your questions Irvina but I'm not sure I have all that much wisdom 🙈

I use my Fitbit versa to track my pace, it tells me if I look at my watch what my current pace, distance & time is and every km what my pace for that km was.

I'm not really following a specific training programme, I work shifts so struggle to do the same runs on same days each week so while one week I might run 4 days if I'm on nights or my husband is I may only fit in one or two runs. I try to do at least one long run each week which I built up from 5-10km and then from 10-16km.

Generally they say 2 weeks between last long run and race day I think. I've been looking at runners world website which I'm also subscribed to their magazine and also the website of the half marathon I am running which has a little training section with a few different training plans and other tips.

I'm aiming for less than 2 hours 30 minutes which I'm currently on course to do but it's my first one so I'm not going to push myself too hard to get it and risk an injury!

Normally I run at 6am so I don't eat before but make sure I've had a decent meal the night before. If I'm running more than 1 hour I take an isotonic drink with me and I always run with water no matter what. If I'm doing my 10 Miles I take jelly beans for roughly the 10km mark. I cannot tolerate the gels so jelly beans seemed to work well for me, I've been using the jelly belly sports ones. I've no idea if they're better than the regular jelly beans or not though!

In the past couple of weeks I've really been concentrating on my technique because I read an article about how a lot of ex gymnasts (which I am) run very very upright (which I do) if I lean forwards slightly as I do when running into the wind I find my calf's ache less and I think it's what helped me knock a minute off my 10 Miles! I may just be talking crap though! With regards to food I haven't really tried many different things, I definitely need to eat before a longer run and I definitely need to run with water and/or some kind of isotonic drink.

I have found Runner's world and woman's running to be really helpful websites & magazines. Lots of really good articles and training schedules to try and lots of good advice. I also had a gait analysis at my local running shop and feel this was invaluable. To begin with my feet really didn't like the trainers I'd bought, after 5km the balls of my feet really tingled but I realised after reading an article that I'd been doing them up too tight! I also feel my running belt is my best tool as it allows me to carry the water I need without having to hold it in my hand. It also means I can have my phone and a little microfibre towel which in the summer was lovely to help cool down!
