A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

Well done sayhello!
It's really annoying weather lasttimeround, am heading up a hill tomorrow, planning to take my yak trax with me. Hoping it won't be too icy as we haven't had any rain or snow. Forecast is for snow tomorrow afternoon, so should miss it.

emummy · 21/01/2018 11:01

Did it! 10 miles, 1300 ft of climb, -5! Was good fun, some icy bits so the yak trax helped. Dog had a lovely time and I overtook some mountain bikers on an uphill, feeling very hardcore! Also very cold, large coffee needed!

584.2

BusterTheBulldog · 21/01/2018 14:14

Well done emummy! -5😳!

I did a slightly slippy 10 earlier, was really nice actually (after my crap run on Fri!).

Well done for getting out yest too sayhello, great effort!

594.2

bibblebobblebubble · 21/01/2018 16:23

emummy that is one run to be proud of! Hope you have defrosted now.

Haven't been on this thread for a while but enjoyed my run today so much I wanted to tell someone (and my family's not into running so lost on them!)

5.2 miles, raining and snowing all the way round, got soaked and muddy but felt soooo good after.

599.4

PS if anyone has any tips for avoiding glasses getting misted up in cold/rainy weather please pass them on - did half the run without them in the end as couldn't get them clear!

emummy · 21/01/2018 17:50

bibble mine never mist up until I'm doing my stretches at the end. I usually wear a cap, don't know if that has anything to with it!

RunningAddict · 21/01/2018 18:25

Well done emummy that’s sounds like a tough run to overcome

bibble there’s a couple of sprays around that are anti fog, think muc off are good for quadding goggles, so may help with the misting up. It’s aboyt £5/6 a bottle

I’ve started my marathon training now, so it was 12 miles today. Not my favourite run with the wind, rain and snow! But I did it so I’m really happy Smile

611.4

Lifeisabeach · 21/01/2018 21:25

Well done everyone for getting out today, conditions were harsh!

Did my 5 mile road race this morning and got a 5k, 4 mile and 5 mile PB Grin I’m so chuffed! I was 3 mins faster than my previous 5 mile best - really could not believe my time. It’s nice to feel that all the intervals, hill reps and long runs I’ve done recently have had an effect. And I actually enjoyed the whole thing too, despite the rain, wind and sleet.

I’ve been buzzing all day! Even a grumpy OH with man-flu, a tantrumming 2 yo, stroppy 7 year old and moody 9 year old could not wipe the grin off my face!

Lifeisabeach · 21/01/2018 21:26

Forgot to add the miles!

617.4

BusterTheBulldog · 21/01/2018 22:03

That’s brilliant lifesabeach!!! Well done! 3 mins quicker is amazing! Grin

emummy · 22/01/2018 07:16

Well done lifesabeach, great result!

Iamblossom · 22/01/2018 14:54

Blimey does that mean life you have done 617.4 miles in JANUARY!!!!???

Lifeisabeach · 22/01/2018 15:28

No that’s the thread total, everyone adds their own miles to it!

LadyLance · 22/01/2018 17:04

I hope it's ok if I join the thread. I'd never really run before last summer and was one of those people who is generally fit but claimed I "couldn't" run. I was aiming for a 10K in October, which sadly didn't happen for a lot of reasons, and over the winter, working in a fairly physical job, I pretty much stopped running.

Anyway, I have now changed jobs to something a lot less physical and joined a gym to try and keep a bit of fitness. I always used to hate/avoid the treadmill, but have found myself spending more and more time on it during my cardio (today I did 20 mins on the treadmill rather than move to another machine after 10 minutes like I normally would). At the gym there are lots of posters for the local half marathon at the end of May, which sort of feels like it should be possible.

The half marathon website helpfully provides a 12 week training schedule, so my plan is to try and get to the first week of that by the end of February, and if I've managed that then I'll enter! The longest run in the first week is 4miles, which I did manage as a distance in the summer, so it should be possible.

Anyway, feel free to tell me I'm mad and it'll never work.

I'm going to try for 3 miles on the treadmill tomorrow, so I'll hopefully have some miles to report back soon. I'd love to try a park run, but not sure when I'll next have a Saturday morning free.

Pinkponiesrock · 22/01/2018 17:28

@emummy
I live just outside Stonehaven and the castle path is one of my fav runs!
I wonder if we know each other in real life Grin

Pinkponiesrock · 22/01/2018 17:36

Just posting up here for the first time, well second if you count the one above in my excitement of find a fellow north east Scottish runner Grin

I do a bit of everything but 10ks are my thing.
Been Parkrunning all through January, got a PB in Saturday so delighted that it’s paying off.

I’ve entered a 10k in March, so currently training towards that then planning an island series of 10k during the summer.

I run with my local running club 2/3 times a week and with friends another once or twice.

My current mileage for January is 64 miles I think.

emummy · 22/01/2018 17:48

LadyLance you are not mad, you can definitely do this! Consistency is the thing, get into the habit and you will be fine. Good luck!
Hello pinkponiesrock! I am over in Banchory, nice to have someone else up in frozen north! Adding your miles gives 681.4

Iamblossom · 22/01/2018 18:03

Blimey I did wonder! Grin

Can I join?

Really getting back into running, and having not done a 10k for months I am now regularly running that once a week plus a couple of 5ks a week as well.

I find running such a psychological activity, it is all in my mind how the run goes I find, I visualise the next section of the run to get me through any low points and always feel proud and amazing when I have finished.

Iamblossom · 22/01/2018 18:04

Oops forgot to post miles run - 33 so far in Jan.

Lifeisabeach · 22/01/2018 18:47

Steady 5k this afternoon for me. My legs are tired after yesterday’s effort.

Will add on Iamblossom’s 33 too -

717.5

LadyLance · 22/01/2018 19:47

emummy Thank you for the welcome, it's great to have some encouragement. I've also seen a relatively nearby 10k at the end of March which advertises itself as being "very flat", which is a rarity around here, so I'm also thinking about entering that!

Does anyone use an app to record their runs? I found one in the summer I was happy with for recording runs outside, but I'd love something I could put treadmill runs into as well.

emummy · 22/01/2018 20:16

I use my TomTom watch & app LadyLance so I'm not sure. Does Runkeeper do treadmill? I know some people who use that.
Welcome Iamblossom!

duckponds · 22/01/2018 20:17

Use Strava- by far the best app for running. You can add treadmill runs in manually

duckponds · 22/01/2018 20:19

Oo forgot to say- my mileage is 154 so far in Jan :)

LadyLance · 22/01/2018 20:45

Thank you duckponds I've downloaded Strava, so I'll let you know how I get on!

emummy · 23/01/2018 10:34

Muddy run in the woods this morning, fine until last 100m when the heavens opened & I got drenched! Knee a little achy after Sunday but not too bad. Having a physio running assessment this week, can't wait!
My miles, plus duckponds 874.5
