A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

Forgot to post yesterday. 4.4 miles at a tempo run. Lots of personal records on Strava. Boot camp today for strength training
Can anyone advise if changing my trainers now for a HM in 7 1/2 weeks would be advisable? Current pair are 2 1/2 yrs old and inspecting them today they're showing quite a bit of wear underneath. Not done loads of running in them but I have done a lot of exercise classes and gym work - treadmills etc.

Early morning frosty run in town, really enjoyed it.
sayhello I got new trainers 8 weeks before my marathon last year and that worked well. They were the same model though, I think you would want to avoid a major change in the type of shoe at this stage.

RunningAddict · 18/01/2018 08:21

Had a few good runs since the last post, 1 speed run on the treadmill and an easy 5K this morning.

sayhello I got new trainers around 5-6 weeks before my last HM and they were fine Smile but they were the same shoe just a newer model

sayhello I have a 30k in 3 weeks and I changed mine last week. Got the same model and wore them straight away for 12 mile run-no problems at all and comfier than old ones, I would defo do it! My original ones were still ‘ok’ but the tread was going and I wanted to not be worrying about it on the day.

Lifeisabeach · 18/01/2018 19:08

4 miles this afternoon, and it was a 4 mile PB for me Smile

I’m doing a 5 mile race on Sunday so I just hope I can maintain today’s pace for one more mile, as that would give me a time I’d be really happy with.

emummy · 18/01/2018 20:29

Good luck on Sunday, hope the weather is kind!

familygermsareok · 18/01/2018 21:57

Well done on PB Lifeisabeach and good luck for your race!

4.5 from club training session - short reps tonight, hard work but feels so good afterwards Smile

Did a really good easy run this morning, one of those where you push yourself just enough but still enjoy the whole run. Got my second training run of 13 miles on Sunday so I’m resting up now!

Lifeisabeach good luck for the run! I’m sure you’ll find that pace for the extra mile Smile

Lovely easy run in the sunshine after school running club.

Advice on snow. There's been some snow here. Enough to leave slushy deposits still. I don't run on Wednesday as I thought it too risky with possible ice. Did an exercise dvd instead. It's mainly melted today. How do you make decisions about running with snow?

emummy · 19/01/2018 13:20

I worry about ice more I think. If there is a few inches of snow I get good grip with my trail shoes, and similar with slush. For ice I have just bought some yak trax running spikes but haven't needed them, typical! Are you running in town or off road? I prefer trails if paths are sloppy.

emummy · 19/01/2018 13:20

Slippy not sloppy!

BusterTheBulldog · 19/01/2018 14:34

4 yest and 3 today for me. emummy and runningaddict saw your posts about easy runs earlier and genuinely looked forwards to my run. Then had one of those runs when you’re just not feeling it. Feet felt like lead! Hey Ho, it All counts.

lasttimearound I also go for trail shoes if bit of snow and I’ve left, I try to either run in the road or stay off road completely. I also make a lot of ‘OOH’ noises every time I think I’m gonna slip.

Just remembered the whole point of my 3 mile run today was to test new running belt and bloody forgot!!! Angry

familygermsareok · 19/01/2018 18:05

Buster I tell myself the ones where you have to really work at keeping yourself going are the ones that improve you the most! No idea if it's true, but I hang onto it.
You will have to go and do your run all over again now with belt Grin

lasttimearound I agree trail shoes give more grip in snow. Fresh snow is lovely and crunchy to run on, slush is usually ok in trail shoes but ice is horrible. Agree off- road on trails or grass better or running in the road as it's gritted. If I'm unsure I just run cautiously at first to get an idea and it's often not as bad as you think. But sometimes it's just not runnable and you have to go home.

emummy I'd be interested in how you find Yak Trax when you get a chance to try them. I'm sure the ice will come!

5.1 trail run with 3 others from club today. We had planned to recce a route for a relay race over some hills next Sat but snow was heavy and roads getting bad when we got there so we abandoned that and did low level run instead. Still had snow up to knee deep in places so very glad we didn't attempt to go over top of the hills. Great fun hurdling the snowdrifts Smile
Previous attempt at recce we took wrong turn as misty, so plan for next weekend is now to just find another team who look like they know where they are going to follow!!

Thanks for the advice family and buster. It's really ice I mean. I run a loop cycle path and through a local park. It had been walked on just enough to get everything compacted and slippy.
I didn't know about trail shoes. I will look into these if I'm missing lots of runs. But generally it's not that cold or snowy. I was more wondering if I'm being a wuss.

familygermsareok · 19/01/2018 20:13

Ah, no, not being wuss. If you can't reasonably trust your feet not to go flying from under you, you can't run. Well, I can't, at least!
If there is a bit of grass or mud beside the cycle path you could try running on that, but if it's really icy there's not much you can do really. It was like an ice rink here a couple of weeks ago and I just had to give up.

RunningAddict · 19/01/2018 21:30

Buster I know the feeling! It’s horrible when that happens. I try and see it as the harder ones improve my running like family said but sill not sure if it works haha! And next time remember your belt Grin

Luckily the weather here is fine apart from the ridiculous wind Hmm hope everyone with snow/ice is okay!

sayhellotothelittlefella · 20/01/2018 09:55

Aaarrgh I woke up really late this morning so I didn't get out to do my long run before DC clubs started. Now I have to fit 8 miles in at some point today and I can't see an 'easy' time to do it. Really struggling for motivation. Someone kick me up the backside
( also forgot to post my mileage from Thursday )

emummy · 20/01/2018 10:26

You can do it sayhello! Just think of the fun you'll have!

familygermsareok · 20/01/2018 11:31

Go for it sayhello, just get that kit on and get out the door before you have time to think it through. Even if you can't fit the full 8 in any miles are better than none.
And just think how good you will feel after Halo

cinnamongreyhound · 20/01/2018 14:41

Hi All!
Been rubbish at keeping up, will post my runs and then go back and catch up! Loving the bigger totals Grin

My canicross run last week end with one of my dogs collapsing and having but be rescued. She perked up and has seen a Vet and got a clean bill of health! My first ever DNF Sad
Ran without her Sunday and then did canicross run with her after vets Monday. Usual run with my friends Tuesday and postponed my Thursday morning run until Friday, plus parkrun this morning. 25.6 miles

Wow Cinnamon, lots of miles! Glad your dog is ok now.

Parkrun for me this morning so I’ll add that on.

sayhellotothelittlefella · 20/01/2018 16:04

Thanks emummy and familygerms. Did it!! Left DH sorting out lunch for the DC ( beans on toast Grin). Planned my route and went for it - 8.1 miles. I knew once I got going it would be fine, I just couldn't get started but DS (19) is running the same HM and he was heading out on his run so that helped to motivate me out the door - along with the 'just do it ' messages here

lasttimeround · 20/01/2018 17:05

Well I'm writing off hope of any more runs this week. Still ice everywhere. I'm going to have to reacquaint myself with jillian and do a few 30 day shred workouts instead.
