A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

Glad you managed to get out anotherotter.

I’m going to get that fast fuel book I think emummy, my diet in general is terrible and I can’t outrun it any more, plus also it might actually improve my running!

I joined an online running coach thing today, with aim of getting under 1hr 50hm. I’ll give it 3 months or so and see how it goes! £35pm so it had best be good!!!

Great North Run for me at weekend- I’m excited!

6 running club miles tonight.

Good luck at GNR Buster, that will be a great experience.
Tempo run this morning, last speed session before my half next weekend.

Easy run & steady run this week, will need to squeeze in another run tomorrow as off to Inverness on Saturday with ds for the athletics league final.

An easy 3 from me yest, and a 1.5 today to test out my new spi-belt (which I love!).

Hope your ds does well emummy.

Thanks Buster & good luck tomorrow.
Last long run before next week's half, so nice in cooler temperatures.

Thanks for the sports nutrition recommendations. Did my second ever 16k/10 miles run this afternoon . I thought more about my food intake before and straight after the run. I already feel much better as a result.

I found myself using my 2 min walk break at 90 minute googling "how many km is a half matathon". I could have carried on to 21km, it's just time restraints that stop me, because I'm not terribly fast.

Just over 53km so far in September. Thankful the kids are back at school so I have more time to run.

IRun4Me · 08/09/2018 16:15

Finally managed to get back out there. Everyone is now back at school and work so hoping I will be able to get back in to the running routine. It reminded me how much I missed it, think the dog has too - he was so excited when he realised we were going running.
Good luck to your ds emummy and good luck buster on the GNR

Two 4.5 mile runs and a parkrun this week. Got a minute and a half off my PB which I'm pleased about. There doesn't seem to be anything as motivating than a bodach keeping overtaking me!

Hope your son got on well, emummy.

Good luck with the GNR today, Buster.

What changes did you make to your diet, Fate? That's great that it's working well.

FATEdestiny · 09/09/2018 11:18

What changes did you make to your diet,Fate?

I ate a lot of porriage oats.

I ensured I had oats (with water, warmed in microwave) for breakfast the two days before hand. I normally don't have breakfast and limit carb generally.

Then after the run I made a delicious bowl of 70g (double portion) oats with 250ml milk, two scoops of protein powder and a desert spoon of peanut butter. I have deliberately not worked out the calories in this because it will be massive and put me off wanting to have it. But I wanted a proper post-exercise refuel and it did (along with 2 litres of squash) immediately make me feel better.

I had this as brunch, so missed my usual lunch and didn't eat breakfast. Then I had a tuna salad for dinner - so light but with plenty of protein (whole tin of tuna to myself). Followed by greek yoghurt and protein powder mix and raspberries and homebaked peanut butter oat granola sprinkled on top.

FATEdestiny · 09/09/2018 11:20

Oh, and we'll done on your PB otter!

Good look at GBR and athletics emummy and Buster!

emummy · 11/09/2018 10:23

Congrats on your pb AnotherOtter!
Hope GNR went well Buster.
Ds & I had a good day at athletics, his team of under 11 boys came 2nd so pretty happy with that.
Steady run this morning, experiencing my usual pre-race doubts! Why do runs in the week before an event so often feel slow & difficult?!

BusterTheBulldog · 12/09/2018 09:13

Great work by your ds emummy!

GNR was soso, I have a cold which didn’t help and it was warmer than expected, but mainly the volume of people running I (stupidly) just didn’t expect! Was on target pace for first quarter but the effort (all the weaving about) to do that really took it out of me, so decided to slow right down and enjoy it! 10 mins slower than Pb! Confused

Not sure what I made of it all really, I’ve said to everyone in real life that I loved it etc but honestly it wasn’t quite how I expected and not sure I’d do it again?

In hindsight, I should have asked to be put in a ‘quicker’ pen and stuck with a pacemaker.

I’ve got another HM mid Oct so hoping for a better performance then!

Hope you don’t mind me jumping in at this late stage in the thread! I’ve only been running since January but I’ve been in the Run 1000km thread (currently on 1050km or there about) and signed up to a half marathon in April. I’m going to settle in with a cuppa and read this from the start, so just place-marking for now! Smile

emummy · 12/09/2018 10:10

Well done Buster! GNR is a huge event, even more runners than London, and a lot of people do say it's too crowded to allow a fast run. I think it might be one of those races that is all about the experience rather than the time. I'm sure your next half will be less crowded!
Welcome thenewaveragebear! Sounds like your running is going really well, that's an impressive total.
Easy run this morning, last one before Saturday's half. Forecast is for 13 degrees with some sunshine, which would be just fine.

138.7

IRun4Me · 12/09/2018 11:23

Hello thenewaveragebear
Well done Buster 10 minutes of your PB is very good over that distance with that many people. I do agree that the time I got my PB on a half was going in a faster pen and keeping the pace maker in my sight the whole time. I also ran with a friend and we kept each other going through the tough bits!
But my favourite half was when I was marathon training and I wasn’t worried about PB, I was slightly slower than previous runs but I loved it and felt so comfortable. I was smiling at the end and felt great - I think it’s because I put no pressure on myself and just enjoyed the experience.
Good luck on Saturday emummy that sounds a good forecast.

Thanks for the information, Fate. Very interesting.

Not surprising that the nerves are kicking in, emummy. I think anything that you really care about and have hopes for can trigger anxieties. I used to be a musician and got horrendous stage fright, which is pretty common, and the consensus there was that nerves prime your performance unless they get severe. Plus the day you don't get nerves means you don't care! Good luck for your half and hope the weather holds.

Well done with the GNR, Buster. Sounds a bit overwhelming with all those people and managing that is an achievement in itself.

Welcome theneeaveragebear. That is a very impressive total!

Two 5 mile runs for me so far this week. First one was hard going and the second felt easier and was two minutes faster, very confusing! I have so much to learn.

152.7

BusterTheBulldog · 13/09/2018 09:01

Thanks guys Smile in the long run up I wasn’t fussed about a Pb at all, and was fully aware of the size. it’s only been the last 6 weeks or so I seem to have forgotten how massive it was and got fixated on a PB. You live and learn eh?! Grin

Good luck for Sat emummy, sounds like a fab weather forecast!

Leg stretch 3 from me.

Can I ask for advice.... I 'was a runner' but gave up my 3-4 times a week habit around 8 years ago. I have agreed to enter a 10k charity run in November but am at a loss of what running wear is kind of 'in' now.

I don't mean trendy but there seem to be tight shorts/baggy/baggy over tight and then long/3/4/Capri tights available.

Can the good folk of MN point me in the direction of what lady runners seem to wear, what works well and doesn't encourage thigh-rubbage, but looks ok.

If delved into my drawer to be greeted with an eclectic mix of 10yr old wicking t shirts that never seemed to be long enough (bum coverage would be good) and one pair of cycling shirts from F&F in Tesco. I expect it to be chilly in November but I get very hot so could do with a long sleeve layer too or some arm warmers (do runners even wear these?) that can be removed.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/09/2018 08:02

I don’t know what’s in, but I bought a lovely thin black top from primark, it’s like a thinner fabric to what the leggings are made of. Nice as a layer but not as thick as my running jacket which gets way too hot. I love karimor stuff as well. When I next buy leggings I will ensure they have a drawstring tie because my non drawstring ones feel like they fall down (they don’t, but I spend my run worrying they will!)

emummy · 15/09/2018 08:13

If it was cold I would be wearing tights or capris ( or winter tights if really cold, like below 2 degrees), a t shirt & sleeves( I get mine from Decathlon) and a long sleeved top plus or minus a gilet. Or just the gilet without the long top. Sleeves are brilliant! You could get a few basics then try and see what works for you. I see some people wearing way more layers than me, we all operate at different temperatures I think! Most of my stuff is from Ronhill, I am 6ft1 and find their base layers long enough. Got a good gilet from M&S last year too. Good luck with your race!

emummy · 15/09/2018 15:04

Half marathon done! Got a pb by a whole 45 seconds! Great race, lovely route in the countryside. Was a wee bit warmer than forecast but not too bad.

FATEdestiny · 15/09/2018 18:44

Well done emummy!

AnotherOtter · 16/09/2018 10:46

Well done, emummy, that's brilliant! Sounds like you did really well.

Parkrun for me yesterday. Was wildly ambitious and tried to get under 25 minutes. Was 25 seconds over but I was still pleased with my time. Felt like a proper runner going along so fast (for me)! Grin My heart rate was really high though, right at the 220-age maximum. Is that bad?
