A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

Wow well done Irun4me. I hope to do Brighton Marathon in 2020!
I think you deserve a rest for a bit!

IRun4Me · 20/07/2018 13:06

Thank you. It was my first (and only 😁) marathon. It was hard and painful at times, even though I did put in the training but I did enjoy it and so proud of myself for doing it. I was pleased with my time and have no urge to do another. But I would definitely recommend it - the feeling when you finish is amazing. I’m hoping to get back out running tomorrow but it is still so hot here

IRun4Me · 20/07/2018 13:08

MrsBlondie how did you get out so early? I used to be able to do it but now I struggle to get up and out - not sure if it’s an age thing?

MrsBlondie · 20/07/2018 13:10

IRunforme, I only want to do one marathon too. One day.

Lol I'm 41 so not sure if that's older or younger than you. I just set the alarm and go. I know if I don't do it early I wont get out. I have 2 kids and a husband who works long hours.

Good interval session; it's cooler now, about 16, but I certainly felt warm by the end! Happy with pace, especially after cinema trip meant a late night last night - late for me anyway!

I did around 7km this morning but stop start run walk as I was just not completely into it. Very hot outside here today!

emummy · 22/07/2018 09:11

Warm this morning; lovely sunny run.
Mine plus Daffo's 283.7

15.3 miles this week Grin Did 3 miles on the treadmill one hot day as it was cooler in the air conditioned gym, much prefer to be outside though. Never would have believed I could do this just a few months ago. Really enjoying it.

Had a laughably disastrous week so only got one easy 5k run in. It's cool and overcast here so perfect weather for me. Perfect weather for midgies too though!

Just done my first sub-70 minute 10K run. Whoop Whoop.

There's a lot to be said for eating enough calories to have the power to run. I'm calorie counting to lose weight, so keep a daily deficit. But DH hit his BMI 25 target this week, so we had our first takeaway since Christmas last night, in celebration. I therefore consumed around 1000 calories in Chinese food last night 🙈

But....! The extra calories did my running good this morning. My 10K felt easy. The first 5K in particular was like a walk in the park and with hindsight I could have pushed much harder initially. Upped the pace for the second half, given how easy it felt and got a good PB as a result.

Gives me good reason to not feel too bad about my rare indulgence last night.

40km this week.

Well done FATE! You could be on to something there, maybe we should have a go at the Chinese food diet!
Tempo run this morning, dh is on holiday so I get to run in the mornings this week, hurray! Warm and sunny, really nice. We had heavy rain last night so by the end of the run I was deliberately bumping into bushes to get wet!

Nice easy forest run this morning, breaking in lovely new trail shoes.

Pyramid speed session yesterday & long run today. Beautiful sunny morning today, rather damp yesterday.

I've started to slowly increase my distance to 10.3 miles over this week. Used to work in orthopaedic clinics so very wary of the risk of overuse injuries.

Does anyone have any tips about running downhill please? I find it jolts my bladder and feels tough on my knees and ankles. On the flat, I strike the ground with my forefoot but it's my heel going downhill. Is there a better way?

emummy · 29/07/2018 18:17

When running downhill it's easy to brake by leaning back. Then you are putting more force through your legs and this causes problems. I try to lean forward a bit and not brake too hard, and try to move my feet faster rather than taking big steps. If I am coming down a very steep hill I sometimes zig zag a bit so the gradient is a bit less.

IRun4Me · 30/07/2018 19:05

I can properly join now. I finally got out there. 3 miles, it was hot, windy and hard but I did it and enjoyed it.

MrsBlondie - I’m the other end of the 40’s lol and sleep has definitely been more elusive in the last year!

40 miles since my last post. Feeling slightly more positive at the mo, but think I might need to postpone my PB aim to later in the year rather than at Great North Run.

FATEdestiny · 31/07/2018 16:12

24.9 miles from my last post, to take us to month end today.

No PB chasing for me. The main challenge is just finding the time to get out there, what with having young children off school for the summer.

Tempo run tonight while ds was at athletics.

7 at running club tonight from me, actually felt quite good!

Just 4 miles to add to this months total - combination of being on holiday and the heat Grin

boomboo · 31/07/2018 22:35

Ran 4.5 miles tonight with couch to 5k club. Actually feeling very unmotivated I was the slowest and they all had to wait for me. The other runners apart from another lady were all very experienced- regularly run marathons etc.
This is my fourth week and I am 3 months post partum.

Should I just suck it up and keep going or should I go out by myself under my own steam?

emummy · 01/08/2018 07:26

I would have thought a couch to 5k club was for new runners! Being the slowest is ok, someone has to be, but did you feel you were welcome or that it was a problem that you were slower? If you are welcomed and supported then keep going. If not you might be better looking for another club or going on your own. Many people find clubs good though for motivation. Good on you for being out there after having your baby. My youngest was 4 when I started running!

FATEdestiny · 01/08/2018 08:33

Should I just suck it up and keep going or should I go out by myself under my own steam?

It's very personal, but I would never want to run with others. I'm after C25K, but still a relatively new runner having started in April (when my youngest was 3 and a half, I might add!). I like to be able to set the pace according to how I feel that day. If that's a slow one, I'd hate to feel disappointed or under pressure to go faster.

But running clubs exist, so not everyone is as antisocial in their running as I am Grin

If you went on your own, you can decide when you go, how often and where you run. You're not tied to what the rest of the club do. I'm all for solo running personally.
