A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

Sorry to hear about your injury CranberryTea!

Welcome RunningAddict and lasttimearound!

That’s pretty spot on familygermsareok?

Sad MyBlackCat
I’m sorry, that’s rubbish!! Fingers crossed that you’re healed up quickly.

Ran Thursday morning and I’ve got a canicross race tomorrow which is meant to be 10k and the course has been posted, it’s 7.2 miles Angry 339

familygerms I made the switch to ‘barefoot’ a few years ago and most of my work and training shoes are barefoot - zero drop, wide toe box and thin sole. It took a while to build up my legs but I love them and it has radically reduced my knee and hip pain, and the foot pain I was getting in my medial cuneiform bone. I have never really been a long distance runner though so i’m not sure how much I can cope with.

RunningAddict · 13/01/2018 07:30

Does anyone have any good advice for a warmer running top? I don’t want to run in a coat/jacket/hoody, but really need some sort of long sleeved layer as these mornings are starting to get to me!

Hope everyone with injures recovers as quickly as possible. It’s rubbish when you want to run but can’t.

cinna good luck with the —slightly longer— 10K!

Strike through fail there HmmGrin

emummy · 13/01/2018 07:40

RunningAddict on cold mornings at the moment I wear a t shirt, sleeves, then a Ronhill baselayer, I think it's called a thermal 200 or 300. Then I have a gilet, just got a new one from M&S for £35.

Lifeisabeach · 13/01/2018 12:55

Sorry to hear about your injury MyBlackCat, hope the 3 weeks fly by. Can you do any other activity?

RunningAddict I usually wear a sleeveless vest and then a more mile long sleeved top over it.

Did my 100th parkrun today, yay! So will add that to the total.

@runningaddict I quite like the karrimor long sleeved tops, cheap and cheerful but do the job surprisingly well. Some of the thicker ones have thumb holes which I like. My current favourite has a turtleneck which is really useful as I have asthma and I'm meant to run with a scarf but never do.

I'm adding my parkrun on too.

Another parkrunner checking in!

Hi there - I've been stop/start training for a HM in march but am really behind because of injuries.

One question, my coach favours fore-foot running - I find this ok as rear-foot running always seems to jar me, but I'm struggling to build up any kind of speed and just don't currently have the strength in my legs to increase my distance. Are there any other fore-foot runners out there? Is it just a case of building up strength in my legs?

emummy · 14/01/2018 12:11

Hi Itscurtains, I guess it is just getting used to it. I have read some stuff recently about how it's not so important how you strike but what works best for you, what is your body's most efficient way of running. Has your coach analysed your natural gait?
Long run this morning, very hilly -368m which is about 1200 feet-went ok but didn't enjoy the exposed bit with the horizontal rain! Soaked through, hot shower time!

Oops I meant 367.3

Anawi · 14/01/2018 12:52

I managed another lowly 3 miles on Thursday, then came down with the sick bug my poor baby brought home from nursery after only her first 3 days 😔 one by one all 5 of us have come down with it, miserable weekend. Going back from maternity leave sucks. Between that and my permanent state of coldy/cough and asthma I'm struggling. Running motivation is AWOL. I'll be happy if I manage to make it just once a week on Thursdays with my group for now I think. Roll on lighter evenings!

RunningAddict · 14/01/2018 13:14

Thanks for all the advice, think I’ll go take a look at some long sleeved tops. This morning’s run has tipped me over the edge!

Lifeisabeach congrats on the 100th park run

Anawi Keep going will the running, but I know how hard it is when the motivation has gone. The group meeting sounds like a great aim

Checking in after first week back at work madness and lack of running- will keep going though, and here's to completing many miles this week!

ClimbingPenguin · 14/01/2018 13:47

Managed 3/4 of a hill interval session (turns out my chest isn’t completely clear yet) and a slow 7 miles today.

Flying around next week to some quite hot places so not sure how much I’ll get done.

Anawi · 14/01/2018 13:47

Thanks RunningAddict I will, keep on plodding! Getting back into the swing of work and running for the first time in months might have been a bit much all at once! I'm just desperate to get back to the point where its part of the routine and I don't have to think about it anymore. One step at a time I guess.
I find if I can get to my group once a week it's enough to keep me ticking over.

Well done everyone with your runs. It helps me to see what you have all been doing, hopefully I'll find some motivation along the way!

BusterTheBulldog · 14/01/2018 16:38

15 to add from me. 12 today which went surprisingly well!

I have a long sleeved more miles one which is perfect for

NamelessEnsign · 14/01/2018 20:56

I picked up a couple of fluorescent layers at Decathlon a month ago and they have been good for this weather. I like the ones with thumb holes and I like high vis!

sayhellotothelittlefella · 14/01/2018 22:10

Wow. There's loads of new runs since I last checked in. Well done.
This weekend was manic for me and I barely had a minute to spare but I finally managed to get myself out running this eve to do the (nearly) 7 miles on my training schedule. It was very slow but I got it done.

Busted I have a fluorescent yellow top I bought in sports direct. Funnily enough I wanted a fluorescent pink but couldn't find one anywhere. ( yellow is such a harsh colour. It just drains meGrin)

BusterTheBulldog · 14/01/2018 23:18

Haha sayhello I mainly prefer it to pink as it counteracts my bright red face! Wink

Will Check sports direct-thanks for tip Smile

newyeardelurker · 14/01/2018 23:27

Hi new joiner here I can add some miles, new year parkrun and a few others

Flamingoose · 15/01/2018 04:35

Hello. I need to join this thread!

I used to be fairly motivated. I ran two half marathons last year. But I've been a bit lazy this last couple of months and I need to get back into it.

I ran twice over the weekend - teeny tiny runs though, only about 3 miles each time. Better than nothing.

What's the number in bold you all put at the end of your posts?
