A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

I managed 3.1 today. Didn't manage to run at all last week, I had some horrible mystery bug that meant I was puking, and then REALLY tired. It felt so good to get out today.

Hi haven’t managed to run all week for various reasons but dragged myself to my new running club and managed 5 miles (although my bloody watch couldn’t find our location for the first 0.5 miles and didnt log it Angry).

I really enjoyed it but I am so slow! I feel bad that the run leader is plodding along at the back with me. My pace was 12:50 min per mile and I got a 5k pb of 39:02. This is only my third week back running after 2 years so I’m really proud I managed 5 miles but I’m impatient too. How long does it take to get a bit quicker at this stage, or for it to feel a bit easier? I don’t want to be really speedy - 10 minute miles would be great.

I did a 3.1 mile interval run tonight, it was freezing! I did 30 seconds sprint, 2 mins jog, and it seemed to make the time go more quickly than a steady paced run.

mayathebee - 5 miles is brilliant, especially after only a couple of weeks back running.

3.1 from parkrun and 5.9 from trail run with running club tonight. Very pretty running through frosted trees with all our lights.

Mayathebee, that sounds like a great run after only just getting back. You will soon speed up with regular running. Don't worry about the run leader, I joined a running club about 5 months ago, best thing I ever did and I'm loving the variety of running I'm getting now. I'm about middle speed in the club, but sometimes the slowest if it's all the speedy ones out and I used to feel bad, but everyone was social and friendly and were happy to take turns running at back and chatting ( while I puffed away Grin ).
I reckon if the speedy ones really want to run faster they would just do their own runs and not the club runs.

A tropical 5 degrees here today which meant the forest run was back to being muddy instead of icy, hurray!
Mayathebee I agree that 5 miles at this stage is brilliant. The speed will improve with regular running; if you can get out 2 or 3 times a week it gets easier again and your speed will pick up gradually. Sounds like a good running club, they made sure you weren't left alone unlike some I've heard of!

Managed to get out on another run today. I’m actually quite pleased to be back in training, I’d forgotten how much I like just getting out and switching off when running. Today was only meant to be 4miles but I didn’t check the route first and I took a wrong turn and had to double back so it ended up being 4.6. I was also really pleased with my times. I’ve just started running again after over 18 months and I was averaging 9 mins per mile - that’s better than when I ran a HM. I think all the extra fitness work which involves interval type training has really helped. If I keep this up I could knock a big chunk off my one and only HM pb

Commute last two mornings

(Only doing one way until I’m fully recovered) so 4 miles to add.

My Fitbit has stopped syncing so might to use Strava direct tomorrow. Run was easier today and not as coughy afterwards.

I’d caution that 5 miles this soon might lead to an injury. Take it easy, if I’ve been off a while I limit to 3 miles and build up to three a week over 3 weeks and then stay there for a month. It’s easy to run for a few weeks, it’s harder to do 8 without overdoing it and injuring yourself.

Evening all :) steady 3.5 miles this evening with running club. Very tired and hungry after!

Sorelip · 09/01/2018 23:13

Another 3.1 this evening. I much prefer running in cold weather.

Hi, may I join? I have abandoned my regular sport this year but am finding my running mojo again and though slow and ploddy (and injury-prone!) I am aiming to do 500km this year - that’s just 10km per week! I’m asthmatic and have my usual winter virus & cough but I have gone out regardless!

Think we had a cross post earlier which took us to 190.5, so with my 10.5 miles we are at

I got too cold and made a mad dash home!

Hi All,

I fell off the last running thread I was on, not sure if this or a half marathon one? Anyhoos, I did 13mikes in sun so feel a bit more confident on my 30k coming up in Feb-still a long way to go to feel confident though! Annoyingly my trainers are on the verge of being done for longer runs so just ordered some more-need to break them in properly before, could be a challenge!

35 miles done so far in Jan:

BusterTheBulldog · 11/01/2018 09:20

Ahem, miles, luckily I don’t know any Mikes

emummy · 11/01/2018 10:22

Welcome Nameless hope the asthma behaves and you can enjoy your running.
Oh Buster I'm disappointed! Could have been an interesting story...
Run in castle grounds this morning, very busy, dogs everywhere so kept having to put mine on the lead or we would have been there all day. Hoping the ice all melts soon so I can get back to my quieter routes!

Hello again, I'm still struggling with injury, tried a run last weekend ended up pulling calf even more. So I need to be sensible, and lay off running a bit longer. Planned to swim but haven't managed that yet!

Lifeisabeach · 11/01/2018 19:02

That must be frustrating Cranberry, but worth resting until it’s fully better.

Did a 5k tonight, intending to take it steady as I have a race on Sunday. Ended up with a PB!

NamelessEnsign · 11/01/2018 20:58

Thanks emummy and buster

Sorry to hear about your injury buster. My kid’s friend’s mum is a super committed runner and turned up at school on crutches this week - I felt awful for her! She had been improving her PBS and winning races recently so this must be a setback.

Well done on the pb beach!

RunningAddict · 11/01/2018 21:14

Ooo can I join please? I start training for my second marathon this weekend and having some other runners to chat too will be so helpful!

I’ve done 55 miles so far in January so I’ll add them on Grin

304.7

NamelessEnsign · 11/01/2018 21:24

I mean sorry about your injury cranberry!

Welcome addict - wow, second marathon! I am not sure my knees would ever hold up - but this is the first time i’m not running on top of my usual hobby so perhaps I’ll do better Grin. I have hypermobility syndrome which is not always the greatest combination with running, but I try. Does anyone else run in zero drop ‘barefoot’ trainers?

familygermsareok · 11/01/2018 23:32

Lots of running for me today! Smile
8.9 very muddy trail run this morning, a bit longer than intended as I took a wrong turn and had to double back.
And 6.4 with the club tonight. We did an interesting exercise where we all had to run for 18 mins out then turn and maintain same pace back, aiming to get back to start in exactly 36 mins. Our coach wanted us to push ourselves and run a bit faster than 10k race pace. I got back in 35:59 so was very pleased, I'm usually rubbish at pacing myself.

Nameless Ensign, I got all enthusiastic about barefoot trainers after reading 'Born to Run' but then realised I would have to build distance up slowly, and as I use stability road shoes and have chronic Achilles problems the run shop staff didn't think they would be good for me. I still wonder if I would get less injuries in them though. How do you find them? Are they uncomfortable on rough ground?

Sympathies Cranberry. I've struggled with various injuries recently and it is so frustrating. I quite like cycling (though not in winter!) but I hate swimming. Nothing beats running though. Hope you recover soon.

Hi everyone. I'm new. Started running again fairly recently. Aiming for consistency rather than speed or distance. I just want to go for a few runs a week and not get injured. Saying that I had the loveliest run yesterday. Felt so strong and steady. Done 10 miles this month.

Sorelip · 12/01/2018 18:18

5 to add today.
