A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

I've done 2 lots of 4km. Still taking me 30 mins but I'm enjoying it and I think that's important for now. Have been playing around with my speed. Can run at 9km/hour but not for long. Good pace is 8.5 and 8 is the pace I go to if my heart rate is about to explode. Still loving it!

Thanks for all the encouragement! I have lost around 15-16kg now in total from my heaviest!

FATEdestiny · 12/07/2018 16:11

4km in 30 minutes isn't bad. It suggests you could run 5km in under 40 minutes and that's the pace I was at when I first started running 5km. It soon got down to under 35 minutes, you will naturally get faster the fitter you get.

FATEdestiny · 12/07/2018 16:14

Oh, and we'll done on your weight loss. I'm a fellow dieter - it's tricky to know what to eat when you are both trying to lose weight and also get fitter/stronger (so need muscle growth). I hit a big milestone today - exactly 6 stone loss as of this morning.

AnotherOtter · 12/07/2018 18:00

Well done on your weight loss, both of you. I'm a fellow dieter and have lost 95lbs as of Sunday with another ten pounds or so to go so in it for the long haul too. What foods are you eating so as to have enough energy and nutrition for running but still managing to lose weight? I worry that I have lost muscle as well as fat as I am definitely not as strong as I was when I was heavier.

FATEdestiny · 12/07/2018 20:55

I get a bit obsessive about my protein intake (given the fact that I run 50k a week and feel I need it) to the point where I use diet whey protein powder to maximise protein while minimising calories.

Aside from that, I limit carbs to whole grains (only oats and rice) and aim for 10 a day, at least 7 veg. I usually eat around 1000 calories per day (it can be 800-1200) and my fitbit tells me I use 2500-2800 calories per day.

A typical day for me would be:

  • BREAKFAST, only on a 10K day, after my run. 30g porriage oats, 200ml skimmed milk, 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder. (300 calories)
  • LUNCH: Home made hummus, no fat. Two whole peppers, sliced, 3 celery sticks. This works out as 7 veg portions and is about 180 calories

DINNER: Family meal with the children cooked from scratch. Always lean meat, at least 3 veg portions, no fat, no potatoes, no pasta, rice once or twice a week. I tend to have a big portion. Usually 400-500 calories.

  • AFTER DINNER (only if I feel I need it, but my absolute favourite 'treat') 150g zero fat greek yoghurt mixed with 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder - makes a consistency of fudge icing and very filling and delicious. 100g of berries on top. 260 calories, but worth every one!

Then maybe 8-10 cuppas with skimmed milk and about 3 litres of sugar free squash. I don't drink alcohol (this isn't a dieting thing, I never have) and don't snack at all, only eat at mealtimes.

FATEdestiny · 12/07/2018 21:05

Just finished an evening 5K. I don't normally run in the evening but felt I over ate today so needed it though I'd give it a go to prepare myself for 6 weeks of evening running over the school holidays. It wasn't as enjoyable as my morning run, but wasn't as bad as I expected.

Are there any evening runners on here? Do you wait and eat your dinner after the run, or have it before you go? My main issue with running evenings is the 'heavy' feeling in my stomach. I feel much 'lighter' in the morning because I have an empty stomach when I run.

emummy · 12/07/2018 21:15

Nice steady run on a lovely cool evening. Really enjoyed it.
Well done to you all on your weight loss, amazing stuff!
Fate when I run in the evening I often have my usual breakfast meal of granola & Greek yoghurt for dinner, run around 45 minutes later and then eat dinner when I get back. This week however I have had my normal dinner then run around 90 minutes later without any problems.

Thanks for sharing your food choices, FATE. I did evening runs on holiday recently and ran three hours after my pretty large dinner. Even then, my stomach felt a bit heavy and my legs not as strong as if my blood volume was still sitting around my gut and not going to my muscles!

RocketPockets · 13/07/2018 20:05

When I do run in the evening I always go before I eat and just eat a bit later. Did a 5k early this morning and have my park run tomorrow! Hoping to improve on last weeks time. Today I did it in 33.20 but the park run is slightly more hilly. I'm aiming to get my 5k under 30 minutes, any tips on how I can achieve this? Sometimes I feel like I'm just not made to run any faster than 6.20 per km!!

Just a couple of short runs since I last posted - not liking this heat and I'm not an early morning runner.

AnotherOtter · 15/07/2018 09:47

Three 5ks for me of which the last was my first ever Parkrun. Got a PB Grin To be serious for a split second, got 28:45 which I'm pleased about but makes me think I have been fannying about in the other runs as they are a couple of minutes slower. Or does the adrenaline of all those people and the sixty year old overtaking you really make a big difference? Also, I saw people doing all kind of exercises to warm up. I just do a five minute briskish walk like C25K. Does that make a difference too?

Nice easy forest run this morning, warmer again! Stopped for a cooling splash in a stream near the end.
Congratulations on your PB AnotherOtter! I think that it is easier to run fast in a race situation (I know park run isn't a race) with others around working hard.
I always do a warm up now, I find without it it takes longer for my legs to wake up! Especially for a shorter faster run like a 5k. For shorter faster runs it also helps to get your heart rate up a bit beforehand so it's ready for the demands of the run. For longer runs I do an easier warm up.

FATEdestiny · 15/07/2018 14:42

Awesome time AnotherOtter! I dream of getting my 5K time under 30 minutes. My PB is 32.46 and I'm proper huffing and puffing to get that time. Under 30m feels unattainable. But I have to remind myself that under 35m felt unattainable a month ago. I WILL get there. Grin

I have the walk to school as my warm up most days - about 1km brisk pace. But I always feel like the first km in any run is when I'm warming up. So I can see sence in a more robust warm up.

60km run this week. 37.3 miles

Been a bit lax on this three, 40 miles since last post.

Does anyone have the Garmin Forerunner 235 or polar m430? Both have good prime deals and I am tempted.... Apple Watch is fine for day to say but I’d like a specific running watch too!

Ahem 226 Blush

MrsBlondie · 17/07/2018 14:37

Oh forgot this then remembered!
Ive done at least 30k since last posting.

Had a race on Sunday OMG. Hottest ever. Not surprisingly it was my slowest ever 10k race result but I don't mind.

MrsBlondie · 17/07/2018 14:39

Buster I have a garmin but its the cheapest one and I love it. Keep thinking about upgrading but not got the money now. Maybe a Christmas gift. Did you get one?

Fate, you will get that 5k under 30 mins - you will.

BusterTheBulldog · 17/07/2018 16:33

Thanks Mrs, I don’t have the money either, but I would like one this year, and it’s a good deal! I’ll leave it in my basket and decide later......Halo

emummy · 17/07/2018 20:27

Well I have a Tomtom runner; it was £45 and I love it! Might get something fancier one day but then would have to learn how to use it...
Nice tempo run this evening, near to my 10k pb of 2 years ago so quite chuffed! And the rain stayed off - it was like the monsoon here earlier today! Half marathon training has begun well.

MrsBlondie · 18/07/2018 10:17

5k early before work today. Need to get the km in as I go away next week and I'm doing a challenge of 1000 km in a year. I'm at 576km so far.

Ohh get it Buster!!!

When is your half marathon emummy? I have one in Ocober.

emummy · 18/07/2018 12:45

Middle of September MrsBlondie*. Good luck with yours - should be a bit cooler then!

emummy · 18/07/2018 20:16

Nice easy run in the forest, beautiful evening.

IRun4Me · 19/07/2018 16:40

Please can I join? I did a Marathon a few weeks ago and since then my motivation has dropped - did need a rest after all the training! I have signed up for a half marathon in March but need to get back out there now. Hoping by joining this group it will help me regain my running mojo

emummy · 19/07/2018 17:25

Welcome IRun4Me! Congratulations on your marathon! How was it? Have you done many? It can be hard after such a big event to get back to normal running again I think.

MrsBlondie · 20/07/2018 10:13

6km all done by 6.30am today. Not sure how many miles that is to add on - 4?
