A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

I can now do 4km in 30 mins. I know it's not super fast pace but it's getting better :). I am hugely motivated by all of you!

FATEdestiny · 02/07/2018 19:44

I haven't been adding mine because I do my distances in km, not miles. My June total was standing at 198.2km, so I did a little 2k extra run on Saturday to get to a round 200km for June

200km = 124.3 miles. So I have a fair amount of add to our June total:

283.6 + 124.3 = 407.9 (for last month)

Hi everyone and welcome to everyone new! I've been absent for a week following my half marathon as I had a few days off running and then I was on holiday.

Well done emummy on your marathon! And well done to everyone else who is running!

Got back on the wagon now with 2 miles in the gym. The goal for July is to run 75 miles!

Well done on your pbs ladylance and emummy!

I’ve dropped off these threads recently due to shamefully being more active on the Love Island ones!

Also had a fairly easy June, back on it now with a shiny new plan for Great North Run.

13.5 miles in Jul so far for me.

First post- marathon run, took it very easy and luckily it's cloudy and cooler today.

What does it feel like after a marathon emummy? Immediately and the morning after and the following days? Was it hard running today or nice and easy as it was far shorter?

AnotherOtter · 05/07/2018 13:10

Also, how are your feet, emummy? Is it inevitable to get blisters and pain?

emummy · 05/07/2018 13:58

Well the day after my legs were a bit stiff, not too bad, with one or two sore spots. They've gradually felt easier since. Today felt ok running, I've an ache in my hamstrings that will take a while to go I think - much foam rolling required!
AnotherOtter I hate to tempt fate but I have never had a running blister! So not inevitable at all! I think all my strength training helped prevent leg soreness and my training mileage was higher this time. Also it may be that a short sports massage and a ceilidh many be ideal for recovery!

LadyLance · 05/07/2018 21:29

3 miles today in the gym. Having a week off was such a mistake- everything feels like a struggle. The gym has just got a curved treadmill as well, which I'm using for 10 minutes as strength training- always leaves me dripping with sweat.

Another easy run in the sun this morning, legs feeling good. Planning 4 short runs next week, then hitting half marathon training. There is one local to me in September and for no good reason I have decided to go for a PB! Of course the children are now on holiday so it's going to be fun fitting in the running and dog walking, though thankfully the oldest is old enough to look after the other two which helps.

Well done on the mara emummy. Your recovery sounds like it’s going really well. I couldn’t walk downstairs unaided for 3 days after mine.

11 very hot miles done this morning and I finished at 9am. It is roasting today.

Sounds like all your preparation and planned worked really well, emummy. Can I ask how you choose shoes too please?

10.1 miles for me in three runs along the beach. Find sand, even packed hard sand, much harder to run on than asphalt. I probably have the wrong shoes too! Stunning views though.

Three 10K runs and 4 5K runs gorgeous me this week. Yesterday's 10K was really hard work in the heat so did a slower paced 5K this morning.

50K is 31.07 miles, so...

106.1

emummy · 08/07/2018 12:11

Very impressed with all this hot weather running, keep it up!
AnotherOtter I got my first pair of running shoes from Run4it after gait analysis and have stuck to the same model ever since - over 5 years! I did try a different one this year but found that my usual ones were comfiest and suited me better, so striking with my Saucony, the model is now called isoguide, I started with guide 6. They usually last a year. Trail shoes took a bit of experimentation, I am now happily settled with my Innov8 X claws, which have a bit more cushioning and a very comfy wide toe box.

AnotherOtter · 08/07/2018 12:40

Thanks, emummy, appreciate the information.

FATEdestiny · 09/07/2018 12:55

Bit of cloud cover and lower temperature today was great for running. I did 10K at a constant running pace, without a walk break, for the first time ever. I even had enough in the engine to have a bit of a sprint finish for the last 800m.

I have a question about drinking while running.

I have started to think that needing a drink during my 10k run is psychological, not a physical need. I have always had one walk break in my 20k for 2 mins, 35 minutes in. I feel like I need this in order to drink. But actually, I'm beginning to think I don't really need that drink - I just think I do. Does this resonate with any more experienced runners? (I'm new to this, so don't really know what I'm doing)

I think that if I'm doing 10k in 70 minutes ish and have a drink before starting, then I surely should be able to physically manage just over an hour without extra water then just have a litre or two when I get home.

This would save me having to carry water and also having to slow down to drink during the run. Is this reasonable or am I being an idiot not drinking while on the run?

FATEdestiny · 09/07/2018 12:56

(That 20k should have been 10k - typo)

emummy · 09/07/2018 13:17

when I started running I needed a drink for 5k; gradually as I got fitter I was able to go further. I now only take a drink for 10 miles and over; however if it is hot and sunny I will take a drink for 5 miles and over.

emummy · 10/07/2018 19:45

Steady run this evening, cooler & cloudy so very pleasant.
Daffo I meant to say, no miles are tiny and they are all welcome!

RocketPockets · 11/07/2018 07:51

Slow run this morning I think I have a mild thigh strain. Any tips?

I did 7k this morning so 4.3miles I think.

115.9

FATEdestiny · 11/07/2018 14:02

Not wishing to jinx myself, but I've managed 10k without a walk/water break for the last 3 days in a row. And it's feeling, dare I say it... easy 🙊

Normally I alternate fast pace 5K and mid pace 10K, this is the first time I've tried back-to-back 10k runs. I think it's because the temperature has lowered. It'll have to be 5K tomorrow though, I have the grocery shopping to do so less time to run.

I need a plan of action for the summer holidays. I normally run in the morning after dropping the children at school. Not sure how I'll get on with evening runs while they're off school, but needs must I suppose.

(I'll total up my km and convert to miles to add at the end of the week)

emummy · 11/07/2018 15:57

I 'm the same FATE, it's very inconvenient this holiday malarkey! I am doing Tuesday & Thursday evenings, then early Saturday and Sunday mornings. I don't like evening runs so much, but it's that or getting up at 5am!

RocketPockets · 11/07/2018 18:15

Fate could you get up early? I tend to get up just before six so I'm out by six. Works for us as I get my run in before work. I'm terrible at running in the evenings!

FATEdestiny · 11/07/2018 18:52

I also don't like running in the evening. I think the crux of it is that I like to run on a completely empty stomach which is why mornings work for me.

My husband goes out to work early so I have to be at home with the children for when he leaves. I could possibly manage a fast 5k if I got up early, it's an option.

What I'm thinking is to use the summer holidays to work on intervals or hill repeats. I've seen training schedules that only take 20 minutes to complete, so will be easier to fit in my day and also useful.

I've never done focused training of that kind before, just put my trainers on and run usually. But I've heard they help. There's a very steep grass hill next to the park near our home. I could feasibly put the kids on the park and run 45 second hill repeats for 20 minutes while they play.

emummy · 11/07/2018 19:50

Hills and intervals definitely help, and can be done in one area so that helps. If your children can manage it they could cycle or scoot round with you too. Disclaimer: have never tried this, mine have always refused!
