A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

Today I did 7km with a 5.30am alarm set to get it done before work and the heat kicks in!

emummy · 27/06/2018 10:54

Welcome MrsBlondie! Very impressive early rising

MrsBlondie · 27/06/2018 12:47

Thanks. Have to do it once per week to fit in. Was pretty cold this winter brrrrrr.

emummy · 28/06/2018 07:25

It was a very chilly winter!
Out early this morning, busy day ahead! Beautiful and already warm.

263.5 including MrsBlondie's miles

MrsBlondie · 28/06/2018 09:45

whats the 253.5? The miles the people on the thread have done Smile

Well done for today emummy. x

emummy · 28/06/2018 10:44

The number is the total for the month so you can add your miles whenever you do them.

Purpleraindeer · 28/06/2018 19:00

Hello! Thanks for the interval timer app recommendation.

11miles this am. Was lovely and cool but summery.

I think that makes 273.5

DaffoDeffo · 30/06/2018 10:00

I went out early this morning and did 7km but walked the first km. I can see the splits on my fitbit weirdly (only after I had stopped). It was a 3.5km out and back and I honestly could have sworn I was doing a similar speed on the way back (but I took a slightly more bumpy, windy route which probably slowed me down). I was doing just under 7mins a km on the way out and 9-9.5 mins/km (which is virtually walking lol) on the way back. But still I did it :).

Really enjoyed it today and will keep pushing onwards!

emummy · 30/06/2018 17:58

Well done PurpleRaindeer & Daffo, great running despite the heat.
Am now up in Orkney; we've been sightseeing in the sunshine and am now starting to get a tiny bit nervous about the marathon tomorrow! It's going to be beautiful but breezy. Fingers crossed for a good day.

nbee84 · 30/06/2018 18:30

Bit cooler in Orkney than down South and thar breeze will be lovely I would think. Good luck, hope yoi have a fantastic race.

AnotherOtter · 30/06/2018 23:41

May I join as well, please? I finished C25K a fortnight ago and run 5k ish three times a week since. I have run 10.1 miles this week and feel pretty shocked that I can say that. I was wondering if any of you would recommend some websites or books on the basics of running, please? Pitfalls to avoid, tips and tricks, authoritative advice, etc. I have googled but got conflicting information and don't know enough to know who to believe.

Good luck with the Orkney marathon, emummy. Hope you get a good breeze to keep the midgies at bay.

Hello everyone!
I'm looking for a bit of advice (again). I have been able to run 5-6k for a good few weeks now and have always been quite pleased with how well I'm able to breathe through it. Yesterday I did my first park run and I had to end up walking a lot of it because of an awful stitch!
Today I went out to do a 6k and I didn't even make half way before having to slow to a walk because of another stitch. I ended up having to walk home and the whole way home the stitch wasn't disappearing.
I don't understand what's changed over the past week that's made me suddenly unable to run without getting an awful stitch that means I have to stop. Any advice very welcome!!

DaffoDeffo · 01/07/2018 10:04

good luck with the marathon emummy

I know nothing yet really rocket but I do know I suddenly began running better when I had more rest days. Is it a stitch in your side? Are you eating before you run?

RocketPockets · 01/07/2018 10:29

Daffo I hadn't eaten anything this morning when I went out, I normally run three - four times a week but this week it was just three, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday.
I'm wondering if I was a bit dehydrated and that's contributed to it, no idea if that causes a stitch though.

DaffoDeffo · 01/07/2018 11:06

have you tried to breathe through it? I can sometimes feel one coming on and I change my breathing and it goes away. I'm asthmatic so I might be a bit more breathing aware than some people though.

For me, it's more to do with breathing out properly. I did read somewhere that the way to get rid of it quickly is to breathe out when you plant the foot opposite to the side of the stitch. I'm not sure if that works!

RocketPockets · 01/07/2018 14:18

I always try to breathe in really deeply when I've got one but maybe I'm doing the wrong thing! I did feel today like my breathing was off but I could feel it coming on during my warm up walk and tried to breathe through it as much as I could. So disheartening as I feel like I've taken a massive step back!

emummy · 01/07/2018 16:59

Marathon done! Phew! It was tough, Orkney managed 23 degrees for us with 390 m of ascent. There was a good wind which helped a lot but definitely hard work. It was an absolutely beautiful course, lovely sea views and great friendly marshals and volunteers. And I got a pb by a whole 4 minutes, hurray! Lovely post race massage and now I'm home for a shower and dinner before tonight's ceilidh.

Ah there you are. Hi all! Hey I will get back into running and add to the numbers. I have meant to come back sooner and not have such a big winter break 😌. Well done to everyone. I actually am missing running.

RocketPockets · 01/07/2018 17:11

Well done emummy that sounds amazing!

nbee84 · 01/07/2018 17:43

Well done emummy! I popped on to see if you'd posted yet Smile You must feel so pleased - congrats on your pb.

15.2 miles this week over 3 runs. Was out at 9 this morning but it was hot already, stuck to the shady lanes. Also tried an early morning run this week as I was awake before 6 one morning. Hard work and just did 2.5 miles. I like to be awake for an hour or so and to have drunk a large glass of water before I go.

Just started to run again after a break, glad to find this super positive thread is still running 😉

Did 5k race on Friday (it was hard!) and my hips ache still. It did inspire me to go and buy new running shoes though - hope they speed me up Grin
