A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

They look nice Running. I wear shorts for most of the year, I usually wear longer ones though otherwise there is unpleasant thigh chafing!

Runningintothesunset · 21/06/2018 17:59

Hadn’t considered chafing, will have to see how that goes! My number 1 consideration is having a pocket big enough for my phone (I listen to podcasts) and poobags for my canine running mate Grin

DaffoDeffo · 21/06/2018 18:08

you guys are pros compared to me Grin but I'm hoping to tap into your knowledge

I have only recently got into running, mainly because I needed to lose weight. I have a dodgy right knee and right hip (plus a recurring problem with my right foot, it's all down that side) but I have started running on the treadmill as I can pace myself properly (which I can't out on the road yet and not sure knee will stand up - treadmill is softer!).

in past years I've tried C25k and never got anywhere but a few weeks ago, I started out walk/run/walk and I'm now up to 5 mins fast walking warm up then 20 mins jogging (at 8.5km/h) then fast walking 5 mins warm down so 30 mins in total - this is around 3.75km in total (I know it's nothing!).

not quite sure how to take myself to the next step - I am monitoring my heartbeat while running (i'm mid 40s) and it's still pretty high but hoping as I get fitter that gets better!

I'm in awe of those of you running every day. I am trying every other day at the moment! I will lurk and read your tips ;)

btw i also got too hot in leggings so now run in Nike women's football shorts. They are v comfortable and airy!

Runningintothesunset · 21/06/2018 18:21

Daffy 3.75km is not nothing! Be proud that you can do that now, and then be even more proud in 6 months time when you see where you are. Keep going on the treadmill for a bit and then try going outside, you’ll surprise yourself at how fast and far you can go.

Have you seen a proper sports Physio? They should be able to help with your right sided issues. I had a dodgy knee which a bit of tape and 2 weeks of bum strengthening exercises magically fixed.

emummy · 21/06/2018 19:14

Daffo sounds like you're doing great! Every few weeks you could gradually increase your running by a minute or two and the fitness will definitely keep improving. A sports physio is a good idea unless you already know what to do for your issues. Strength training in addition to the running would be beneficial too. Good luck!

bibblebobblebubble · 21/06/2018 19:46

Hi daffo! If you saw me shuffle along you definitely wouldn’t call me a pro :)

I had a dodgy knee too. I saw a Physio and did some exercises to strengthen hips. Definitely good to build up gradually but regularly and allow the knee time to recover if it’s sore. Think my body’s got used to running now and the knee feels much better.

DaffoDeffo · 21/06/2018 21:04

Thanks so much for the advice. I saw a podiatrist for the foot but never thought of the physio for the knee/hip so will go and do that. I am doing a bit of strength training but probably need to do more.

Thanks for the idea about increasing the running by a minute or so. I will try that. And yes I look like I need an ambulance behind me at the moment but hopefully that will change ;)!

RocketPockets · 21/06/2018 22:12

The shorts talk has reminded me I'd like some! Any recommendations on longer ones to avoid chafing? I have quite big thighs (not fat just thick 🙄) and they chafe when walking so I presume they will when running as well. So any longer shorts? Also where does everyone tend to buy their running attire from? I have some fabletics crop leggings that I love and a short sleeve top from Tesco. I desperately need some new gear but no idea where to look. Whenever I google it it becomes a bit overwhelming and I end up not ordering anything.

emummy · 21/06/2018 22:31

I have Ronhill twin shorts, they are very comfortable. Most of my running clothes are Ronhill!

emummy · 22/06/2018 11:36

Short tempo run in the woods, nice morning

LadyLance · 22/06/2018 18:27

Sounds like everyone is doing well and welcome to anyone who is new!

Even when it's hot I prefer capri leggings, I think they give me a little more support and weirdly I find them less hot. I tend to buy whatever is cheap, got some nice stuff from boohoo in the past or I keep my eye out for sales.

Last run before my half yesterday evening, 2.2 miles nice and easy. It's suddenly got hot again so hoping for a breeze on Sunday.

Good luck for today LadyLance, hope you have a great time!

emummy · 24/06/2018 09:54

Last pre-marathon long run, lovely sunny morning.

nbee84 · 24/06/2018 13:05

Good luck LadyLance x

Enjoy the tapering emummy 🙂

I've run 12 miles over 3 runs this week. Really enjoying the sunshine 😎 and tge cool shady lanes.

This weeks niggle seems to be the arches of my feet. Been stretching them with a band over my foot which seems to do the trick.

239.7

LadyLance · 24/06/2018 21:21

Thank you for the kind wishes. When is your marathon @emummy?

Sounds like your running is going well @nbee84

Torbay Half marathon today! It went really well- chip time of 2.35, so knocked 6 minutes off the time for my first half marathon! It was very hot again, but there were 5 opportunities to grab water on the course, which did help! The race was really well organised and supported.

It's a two lap race with some hilly bits- on the last lap, mile 11-12 was mostly uphill and a real struggle, but otherwise I felt good during most of the race. Last time, I made the mistake of going off to fast, so I deliberately paced my first mile especially. I almost wonder if I should have gone a bit faster! However, I finished well and enjoyed the race much more than my first one.

Would definitely recommend it to anyone in the area!

One day, I'm going to do a flat half marathon and it will feel like the easiest thing ever!

Well done LadyLance, fantastic result! Heat and hills, that's tough!
My race is next Sunday, heading up to north coast on Friday to get the ferry, getting excited now!

LadyLance · 24/06/2018 22:36

That sounds very exciting emummy I'll be on holiday next weekend, so wishing you luck in advance!

Runningintothesunset · 25/06/2018 07:26

Well done @ladylance! Hot and hilly, I’m seriously impressed Grin

LadyLance · 25/06/2018 10:34

Thank you Smile. The first half I did (Plymouth) was also hot and hilly- I'm hoping if I ever manage to do a flatter one, I'll reduce my time loads!

DaffoDeffo · 25/06/2018 18:30

I have no one else to tell so I have come on here to tell you lot Grin

I have managed my first 5k on the treadmill! I am so excited. Did all your tips and they all worked and managed 5 mins walking 25 mins running (still fairly slow but I fele comfortable at that pace) and did it in 38 mins.

I was so pleased I had a giant pistachio ice cream afterwards Blush but still onwards and upwards!

I am open to all your tips now! Btw I bought some new shorts, sundried shorts which are brilliant - they have an inner lycra short so your thighs don't rub - they might be a bit much for those of you who are long distance runners but anyone who is a bit portly and still running short distances, they are great.

I can't thank you enough for your advice! I feel elated today - I never ever thought I would be able to do this! x

DaffoDeffo · 25/06/2018 18:30

sorry I meant 5 mins walking 33 mins running!

Purpleraindeer · 25/06/2018 18:32

Hello - just a quick question for you all - is there an app I can use on my iPhone to help me with intervals etc. I’m doing a half mara in a few weeks so mostly have been doing long slow runs but am wondering about a considered assault on my 10k pb and think I might need to do some intervals/tempo runs

It has been a loooooong time since I worried too much about pace so I thought I’d see whether there were any clever apps I could use.

I have map my run but am not sure whether I can programme a workout into it?

I’m only running 1 day pw at the moment as I do lots of cross training so don’t have much to post in the way of training compared to you hardcore runners

emummy · 25/06/2018 20:18

Well done Daffo that's brilliant! A well deserved ice cream there! Shorts like those are what I run in, the inner shorts are vital, even more on long runs I think, and especially in the heat.
Purpletaindeer I have an app called Simple Interval Timer SIT, you can programme that for intervals. I don't think you can do it on Mapmyrun. I usually use my watch now but SIT worked well before that.

emummy · 26/06/2018 09:42

Easy 3 miles plus strides this morning, lovely warm sunshine.
