A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.

Well done bibble! Just gradually increase your long run, I used to increase mine by half or one km every two weeks. Good luck with the half.
Steady run through warm sun and strong winds this morning, good fun.

Tempo run in the forest, less windy today thankfully. Will be spending all day tomorrow cheering on ds and his team at athletics down in Perth, should be fun!

Sounds like you are doing great emummy good luck to your DS tomorrow! Am I right in thinking your marathon is quite soon?

bibble 8.7 miles today is great. In the run up to my first half marathon, I increased my long run distance by a mile each week- which was fairly doable. I'm going for my second in a week, and have been doing similar. It was working well today until the last mile, so I didn't quite get to where I wanted to be, but that's ok.

I did also increase my weekly running/cardio, but that's from quite a low base. Currently in the week I'm aiming for 1 x 3 mile run, 1x 5 mile run 60 mins x cardio plus my long run- if I can fit in another 3-5 mile run that's great, but I don't panic if I can't.

I've been loosely the beginner plan on this page, which I think is quite good- www.torbayhalfmarathon.co.uk/training.html

Long run today- was aiming for 10 miles, got to 9.8 and was starting to feel a bit of pain in my lower back, so left it there as I didn't want to get injured just over a week before my race.

Aiming for a minimum of 5 miles on Sunday, but might push for a bit more- then tapering early next week! I'm excited!

Hello, I'm new and would like to join this thread.

I run every day with my dog - 10k twice a week and 5k every other day. I'm slow, mainly because I'm obese (not long, 1lb until I am 'merely' overweight), and also have short 27" legs. I run for calorie burn as well as for health and am dieting too.

I had no idea I would love running like I do! I only started C25K in April, having never run. I'm therefore very much a newbie. I have lots of questions, because I am DIY training and have no real clue what I'm doing!

At the moment I run non-stop for my 5K runs and it takes me around 38 minutes. I do 30 mins run then 2 minute walk repeats for my 10k. My PB improves with every 10k I run, today's was 81 minutes.

emummy · 16/06/2018 20:35

Welcome FATE! Sounds like you're doing really well. I'm always impressed with people who run every day, I think my middle-aged legs would give up!

emummy · 17/06/2018 10:11

Lovely run in morning sunshine along country roads.

2 runs this week totalling 8 miles. 🤞 injury free. I'm going to see if I can slot another run in somewhere but not sure where in amongst my gym classes.

Welcome FATE sounds like you are doing really well. I'm another short legged slow runner!

Sounds like it is going well emummy and nbee

4.8 miles with a friend yesterday and 2 today. Starting to taper before my half. Quite damp and cool here which would be ideal for Sunday.

According to Strava I have already run over 50 miles this month so I think my July goal will be 75 miles!

I’m going to come and join you if that’s ok! I recently did my first half marathon after taking up running in September. I’m finding it a bit odd not having a goal at the moment so I figure if I post (as opposed to just lurk) then that might keep me motivated Grin

Hi thanks emummy and LadyLance - I'll just keep on gradually upping the distance. It is getting really addictive now, I found it so hard last week but now I'm itching to get back out and do a long run again, hoping to get out on Wednesday and get over the 9 mile mark. I've been running about 3x a week for about 6 months now which seems to be helping stave off injury after some dodgy knees in the early days.

FATE that sounds great and those are respectable times. I'm naturally a slow runner but have been gradually getting faster and it is so motivating!

bibblebobblebubble · 18/06/2018 22:44

Oh forgot to add yesterday's run - a relaxed 7km evening outing

I signed up for Bournemouth half marathon in October. Has anyone done this one? I'm not sure if the route is particularly hilly or not and hills are something I really struggle with! Any tips on how to improve my hill running?
I also bought some new trainers after having my gait tested and they are making the balls of my feet tingly not exactly rubbing but more a tingly feeling, anyone know if this is just because they're new? They cost a fair bit and are muddy so I won't be able to return them if they aren't suitable for me Confused
I'm increasing my log run by 1.5 Miles every 2 weeks until 2 weeks before the half and then toning it down for a week or so before race day! Weirdly excited about it!!

emummy · 19/06/2018 12:46

Glad your injury is settling nbee.
Welcome Runningintothesunset, well done on your half. Maybe you need to book another one?!
Not sure about Bournemouth Rocket; if you google you might be able to find an elevation profile. Sites like Fetcheveryone often have info on courses. Tingly feet sounds odd, is there anything else you've changed, like your mileage or the surface you run on? Or could you use new comfiest socks? If none of those it might be the shoes. You could try doing some more off road running if road impact is a problem.
Intervals for me this morning, shorter ones as I'm now tapering so it was quite nice!

Hi everyone. Welcome running. Still tapering so 2.1 miles today.

Rockets I'm not an expert on hill running but I do live somewhere very hilly. I try to have one short hilly session a week (it is hard work) and make sure to run at least one proper hill each session. I try to run hills and inclines at a slowish pace staying in the same rhythm. If you go too slow it can get harder again.

If you can also practice running downhill.

Good luck for your half.

Cross Post with emummy

Total should be 156.5

RocketPockets · 19/06/2018 15:11

Thank you both, will definitely have a google!
I'll definitely incorporate more hills into my weekly runs, I have a steady hill (I think) quite close to me so will try that first of all!

LadyLance · 19/06/2018 21:05

Slight inclines are good to start with, I think. You use different muscles running up hill, so you may have to build these up slowly. On steeper hills to start with I used to run 10 strides, walk 10 strides and do the same going down to build up the muscles needed, and I do think this can help.

Hills that stay at a steady incline are good- hills that increase the incline as you go up them are harder.

Runningintothesunset · 20/06/2018 09:20

I live in a really flat area, so very impressed with those do you running hills.

I do definitely need to book something else in, sort of tempted to go for the Manchester marathon next April (the flatness appeals!)

Johnnycomelately1 · 20/06/2018 10:51

rocket DH is from Bournemouth so I know it reasonably well. If the course is the same as 2017 it's not too bad but there are a few short steep climbs. I imagine the main issue will be the headwind on the bits that go west along the coast as that can be a real SOAB.

Just checking in to add my miles since last time- total of 55km/34 miles, mixture of trail and road with a bit of treadmill thrown in. I'm gradually getting fitter and faster although panicking a bit about being race fit by October.

RocketPockets · 20/06/2018 18:33

Thank you Johnny I've been trying to read a bit about it and some people ya it's fairly flat with a couple of inclines and others say it's really hilly! I'm going to do some hill training regardless as hoping it will help with my endurance Smile

bibblebobblebubble · 20/06/2018 20:36

Broke the 9 mile barrier today - totally shattered now but pleased that my knees are holding up.

Worried about the heatwave next week - don’t like running when it’s too hot!

RocketPockets · 21/06/2018 10:12

I tackled some hills today! I feel absolutely done in but now I have something to work from. I'm going to do a long run, hill runs and an easy run each week as a minimum. Hopefully will do an extra run not sure what kind though and some walking & Pilates on the other two days. I also need to do some strength training!!
I figured out my trainers issue, I believe I had them done up too tight, I loosened them slightly today and no tingling so far Smile
This might seem like a silly question but is the total miles a total for the group? I don't want to mess it up!

emummy · 21/06/2018 12:06

Well done bibble! Maybe you should have a holiday up here in Aberdeenshire next week, it will probably be slightly cooler here.
Good work on the hills Rocket and I'm glad your feet are better! Definitely agree with strength training, I think that's really important, and the hills are good for strength too.
The mileage is indeed a total for the group for that month.
Easy run around town for me today, nice morning but very windy again.

Runningintothesunset · 21/06/2018 17:10

It was crazily windy here today too, I ended up a couple of km as I couldn’t seem to get a rhythm of breathing with the wind in my face Hmm

Has anyone got these shorts? I am thinking of braving the leap from leggings as I’m too warm!
