A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

Thanks for changing the total LadyLance, and well done on your long run.
Great PB RunningAddict!
Very slow long run in the sun this morning, had to stop at the river and splash my arms and legs! Legs dead now!

RunningAddict · 06/05/2018 13:27

Thanks I was really happy with it!

Easy 10 miles today in the sun, was lovely but could have done with a river too emummy

Well done LadyLance Smile it’s difficult pushing up the miles

I managed a 10k run in the heat this morning. It was a struggle but I'm pleased I did it. It's been an odd week running wise. I did 4.5 miles with my new running group on Wednesday which I really enjoyed (despite an embarrassing trip and fall part way round Blush) but I felt grotty and run down at the end of the week so I haven't been out since. Hoping to fit in a short run tomorrow or Tuesday, group run Wed evening and a long run with a friend on Friday.

Hope you feel better soon maya, well done on the 10k today too!

I only managed a hungover 5 this morning, even that didn’t seem likely at one pound though, so I am pleased!

Can I join the thread? I'm tentatively starting to run again after 2 years off due to plantar fasciitis. Did my first Parkrun in 2 years yesterday and was so thrilled to get to the finish, even though I was very slow!

RunningAddict · 06/05/2018 17:47

Well done maya, I always find the firsts hot run so hard

Buster I’ve had a few days like that, at least you got out, I usually just hide on the sofa 😂

Hey Eolian, well done for the park run! Getting that first run back is always the hardest

Can anyone recommend a sun cream for running? I’ve tried a few but always end up greasy and covered in flies Shock would love to avoid the dodgy racer vest tan lines this year....

nbee84 · 06/05/2018 20:42

Shy wave to all - not sure if I should be here Confused But my family and friends aren't really into running so thought I could talk it through here Grin

Have recently had a go at 'running' I've always wanted to be able to run - being outdoors, being able to exercise anywhere as long as you have your trainers but each time I've tried in the past I haven't been able to run for more than 5 mins or so and I've given up within 10 days Blush

This time I've built up a good fitness level through various classes at the gym including spin.

I did 3 5k runs (each a week apart) fairly slow at around 32 minutes but managed them with no walking. Run 4 I felt good at 5k so kept going and did 7.8k. Run 5 I did 10k because I waned to see if I could - the last 3k was hard, wasn't sure if my legs or my lungs would go first but did it with no walking in 1:09.

Yesterday I did a circuits class and then my spin class was cancelled so ran 2.5 k and ths morning I went out for 5k. BIG mistake I think - too keen, too much, too soon as now my right hip aches.

So the plan is ibuprofen, rest and no running till at least next weekend and only then if the pain has gone.

Open to advice Smile

JustGettingStarted · 06/05/2018 21:21

Run more frequently but slower and for shorter duration. Build up slowly.

BusterTheBulldog · 07/05/2018 02:20

Thanks runningAddict annoyingly I felt fine when I left and then it got bad when I was about a mile in to a circular route, hey Ho!

Hi eolian I also have pf, found running and gym trainers that suit me now and basically cannot wear flats EVER! Had flip flops on for 5 min walk in sat and basically broke my feet again! Also convinced our local ‘trendy’ shop to stock fashion trainers that would suit me but turns out they retail at £70 rather than the £40 that I somehow had had n my head! 😱

Sounds like you are doing awesome nbee84, are you training for anything?

Have left car at beer fest 7 miles away, so have to run to get it tomorrow 😳

nbee84 · 07/05/2018 09:10

Thanks both. No, not training for anything. Just trying to keep or maybe improve my fitness levels and keep the calorie burn up as I like cake a bit too much. I'm 50 next year and lost 3 stone a couple of years back, then picked up a gym habit.
I'd really like to keep the running up this time. What sort of distances/speeds should I be looking at? I'd probably only be able get out a couple of times a week as I love my other classes and would like to keep them up.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 07/05/2018 10:52

Took ds out for a short run on Saturday. Short for me, but I pushed him too hard! It was a slow 4.7km.

Went out this morning with the dog and we managed my longest run yet - 11.21km.

I'm building up to half marathon distance, so next week's long run I will aim for 12.5 km I think.

emummy · 07/05/2018 12:06

nbee84 welcome! With running the trick I think is to build up gradually; even when you are fit from other exercise the impact involved in running makes it different. So if you are comfortable running 5k then stick with that for a week or two, then on one run go a little farther, only 1k more, then after another few weeks increase a little again. Doing too much too soon is one of the most common ways to get injured at running. Good luck!
Well done on your long run athing!

northbynorthwesty · 07/05/2018 12:11

Would like to join this thread please. Can currently run 3miles but have signed up to a 10k. I am determined to do it. Just need to keep that determination up as I struggle to find time to run: work and kids activities. But that’s just excuses !!

Look forward to hearing your inspiring stories

JustGettingStarted · 07/05/2018 14:09

I ran 10k this morning for the first time. It took me 1:20. I'm on Week 6 of Bridge to 10k and I'm really only supposed to run for 60 minutes, but I felt like pushing on until I'd gone 10k. I won't do it again this week, though. I'll just stick with the 60 minutes for the next 2 runs.

I guess I'll do one long run a week for a while. But I don't think I will be able to do many 10k runs for a long time.

emummy · 07/05/2018 20:07

Well done Just that's great! Keep going steadily, you're making great progress.
Wee run/walk tonight with dd2, we haven't done it for a month or so. She did really well, running 12 minutes now.

130.3 with Just's 10k

nbee84 · 07/05/2018 20:35

Thanks emummy - I'd been thinking along those lines. 5k feels comfortable - not easy, I still need to push myself through it but I think it's probably about the right distance for me at the moment. I do love to challenge myself but I will hold back as the last thing I want to do is end up injured and unable to do any exercise.

BusterTheBulldog · 07/05/2018 20:39

Well done just! And welcome north Smile

7.5 from me today with a bit of walking. Route to retrieve car was mainly up hill and absolute killer in the heat. Away with work for couple of days now, have packed trainers but not sure will get run in.

Myview2 · 07/05/2018 20:46

Hello everybody,

I’d love to join you all if I may Smile

I started my New Years resolution in February and have run everyday since. I don’t run very far or very fast but I find doing it everyday means I won’t fall off the wagon and talk myself out of it.

I haven’t signed up for any races (my speed is too depressingly slow to what it was when I used to run 10kms regularly ten years ago.)

I have however decided to run 1000 miles in 2018 and am managing at least 35km a week. I have built up to doing 15km as my longest runs (sometimes I only do 2.5km). My aim to is be able to run faster and quicker at some point. I am getting there slowly and hope you can all spur me on.

JustGettingStarted · 08/05/2018 08:13

That's a great goal, myview!

I'm still trying to decide what my goal is. I don't know what I want to work towards.

I know that I enjoy running for exercise and improving my parkrun time. But I don't know how much I want to dedicate to this running thing. It interferes with my weightlifting to push myself into longer and longer runs. I'm willing to put the weights on the back burner for a while, but I want to return to focusing primarily on building strength and muscle with cardio being something I do the bare minimum.

I think my current plan is to run the 10k race in Scarborough in late October, then go back to the heavy lifting until the spring.

I also think I need to make up my mind and be very comfortable with the idea that I want to focus primarily on the 5k, pushing the boat out only for the 10k race.

emummy · 08/05/2018 11:53

Welcome Myview2. Very impressed with the running every day, never been brave enough to try it, I think my legs might fall off!
Beautiful morning here, interval session in the forest, a bit slower than usual because of the heat. Happy with the effort though.
Sounds like a good plan Just!

Hi All

Jumping back on post bunion op- I think I lasted posted in September. Lovely to see some old faces still here and see some new ones. I've done a few short runs over the last few weeks (following a few false starts) and pretty sure my feet will take it now so I'll add my May miles to date (26).

By way of introduction, I live in Hong Kong and mainly run on trail by choice but at the moment its more road.

applelolly · 09/05/2018 06:51

Hello all. May I join you? About 8 years ago I built up from c25k to doing a half marathon (and losing 4 stone!) Sadly then I fell off the wagon, did no exercise for about 5 years and put all the weight (plus more) back on Blush
Last November I bough a really cheap second hand treadmill and finally started doing a little bit of running again. In Jan I headed outside for my first run in many years. I only managed about 2 miles, and was VERY slow, but it was the start of getting back into it! And I have actually stuck with it this time round and am now heading out regularly and building my runs up. I haven't done quite as much as I had hoped but Im still plodding away. And I've lost just under 2 stone! On Sunday I ran my first 10K race in many years. It was hard going , a hilly course and it was 25 degrees by the time I finished. I did it in 1 hr 13 mins - which I know is slow, but at least I did it! And I loved it! I have now signed up for another 10k in July and want to see if I can improve on my time. I am aiming to run 3 or 4 times a week. A mix of shorter, faster runs and longer slow runs.
Tonight I'm off out for around a 4 miler with any luck. I have loved reading all of your running adventures - you are all inspiring!

Iamblossom · 09/05/2018 10:32

I love reading all the running stories too apple - welcome and wow your story is just as inspiring! Good for you!

I did a 5km in the gym yesterday and my lovely 10km route this morning in the beautiful sunshine.

I am going to have to leave it for a week now and just gym, no running, I think, as my back was REALLY aching the whole way round today which was really annoying. I had to stop a couple of times to stretch my back out and feel a bit hobbled now! This happens every now and again due to all the road running I do, but I am hoping leaving running for a few days will mean I am back to normal soon.

I also sleep on my front which I don't think helps...

Curse you, old body!

JustGettingStarted · 09/05/2018 12:56

blossom do you do any weight training? I personally think it's very important to have all-over strength training to prevent and counteract imbalances. We accrue imbalances in our daily lives - sitting at a desk for hours or carrying a heavy handbag over one shoulder... Careful and deliberate weight training will prop up the weaknesses that develop. You probably have a weak spot in your back or glutes or hips and the imbalance puts a strain on you.

Yoga is also good for setting things right.

Iamblossom · 09/05/2018 13:44

thanks just - I do some weights - I do bicep curls and tricep dips with an 8kg dumbbell - 3 sets of 12 each, probably 2-3 times a week.

Not sure if that counts to be honest?

yes my lower back is very weak.
