A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.

Long run this morning. Was a the easier than I expected, pretty knackered now though! Taking da to his first athletics contest today so at least I'll get a seat, even if it won't be very relaxing.

Hi all,

I wrote a post here on fri but I lost it Angry

Been for some short runs this week and an 8 today. My head is very much in a ‘can’t do it’ phase at the mo, but hoping that will change ASAP. Thinking of starting a half marathon ‘go faster’ training plan as a way of sticking to something, have the my as I s app downloaded unless anyone knows on any other good ones?

I had a biomechanics thingy done through physio when I was injured, I should go back really as be interesting to see how / if things have changed. Was really interesting!

18.5 to add from this week anyway.

Buster sorry you're not feeling it. Maybe following a plan will help so you have an aim for your runs. Hope you feel more with it soon.

emummy glad you had a good long run. How was the athletics contest?

We all went to Yorkshire Wildlife Park yesterday - I did the 5k run and DDs did the junior run (with me). It was fun to run around the lions, giraffes, polar bears and rhinos and the race entry included a day ticket to the Wildlife Park so we spent the rest of the day there. We'll be doing it again next year but we need some costumes next time.

Longest run ever this morning, at 5am. Felt sleepy and slow but I did it.

I registered for the London marathon ballet when I got home!! We shall see. Haven't quite cracked 10k yet but I'm very close.

Urgh, ballot! Thought that looked wrong!

salsamad · 30/04/2018 10:29

Wondering if any one can offer me some advice?
Have been running for many years - I run for 30 minutes twice a week, every week (used to be 3 times but reduced due to an Achilles injury a yr ago) and I do an hours power yoga each week too and am also a fairly busy person.
Have recently borrowed a fit bit style watch to track my heart rate.
My average heart resting rate seems to be around 53 but has gone as low as 43.
When running my rate goes up into the 150s (peak 157) and my heart recovery rate is 66 which I understand is good from google.
My query is, is my exercise peak rate too high - looking at stats you take your age (I'm 52) from 220 = 178 and I should aim to increase my heart rate to 60-80% of this figure, so top range would be 143 and I'm obviously exceeding that - is this bad for me? Should I be slowing down, jogging rather than running?

I would find this hard as when I'm in the groove running to music I love it.....

LadyLance · 30/04/2018 12:34

How was the athletics emummy?

Buster I don't have a recommendation for "go faster" plans, but there are lots out there, so if you find one you like, hopefully that will give you more motivation?

That sounds like a super fun run mayathebee!

athing Good luck for the ballot! I was sort of thinking of entering, but I know I won't have the time to fit in training next year!

salsamad I don't have much very useful advice, I'm afraid, but I have heard/read that the 220-age formula is not always very accurate, especially if you are very fit or have always been active. One suggestion I've read for working out your actual max heart rate is to run up a hill 3-4 times quickly, then run up it twice more, as fast as you possibly can. The highest heart rate you record will be close to your maximum heart rate. You can also get your maximum heart rate measured/assessed professionally.

I'm less sure about the rest of this, but as I understand it, exceeding max heart rate is only very dangerous if you already have heart issues. However, if you've truly exceeded your maximum heart rate, you're much slower to recover, more at risk from injury and get less benefit from training. As you're recovering well, I don't think you're actually exceeding your maximum heart rate.

I ran 5.7 miles today, two thirty minute sets of interval training on the treadmill. I was trying to push myself a bit, and didn't feel like I was dying at the end, so that was good!

This morning was cold and rainy and windy but once I warmed up, it felt good. I ran a very slow 7k.

emummy · 30/04/2018 13:49

Hope your mojo returns Buster! Most of my training plans have come from magazines or books, am currently following one from Paula Radcliffe's book.
maya that sounds like a brilliant run!
Good luck in the ballot athibg, fingers crossed!
just well done on getting out in horrible weather. Lovely sunny day here, not warm though.
salsa I agree with LadyLance, I think the heart rate formulas are inaccurate, especially for women, and how you feel is a better guide. Someone wrote a great book on heart rate training, Matt Fitzgerald maybe?
The athletics contest was good, although freezing - whoever thought building an athletics stadium with a view of the North Sea was a good idea?! Ds did well, got a shot put pb and his relay squad came 3rd. 1st meet of the season, 3 to go...

LadyLance · 30/04/2018 13:57

Well done to your DS emummy

Just I am rubbish at running in the rain, so go you! (this is why I have a gym membership!)

JustGettingStarted · 30/04/2018 15:52

I actually enjoy running in cold rain. I don't like my fingers going numb so I pull my fists into my jacket sleeves until I'm very warmed up. But I love the feeling of a sweaty hot body and cold extremities. It's exhilarating.

emummy · 01/05/2018 11:06

I quite like running in the rain, but I like the sun too! Lovely sunny morning here, did a hill session and survived! Tested out new sun visor & it worked well so will take that to the marathon - unless it's raining if course!

10k on treadmill this morning. I look like I've had a shower in my clothes afterwards!

I've been doing a Bridge to 10k program, and the end is in sight: tomorrow I will run 30 minutes, walk one minute, then run another 30 minutes. (today it was 25 minutes x 2).

Next week is the final week. I'll be running for 60 minutes straight. It won't be 10k, though. Probably closer to 8k, considering I didn't quite hit 7k with my second interval today.

So I guess I'll run 60 minutes 3 times next week and then I'll start to run for distance, gradually adding a half kilometre per run until I'm running 10k, however long that takes.

I run very slowly. Much slower than I can run at Parkrun. At parkrun, on a flat course, I have managed to average 6:01 per kilometre. I do my long runs at about 7:30 per kilometre, or even slower. I hold myself back. So I expect to take about 01:15:00 or more to do 10k. Probably longer.

I don't see myself having the time to run longer than that very often, but I will be doing a 10k in October. I have plenty of time to hopefully get the time down.

LadyLance · 02/05/2018 13:45

My race number came today Shock I'm excited but also really nervous. 2.5 weeks to go!

Just an easy 3.1 miles today as I was testing out a new route. Day off tomorrow then long run on Friday and a short run+ strength training at the weekend!

Next week I start tapering apart from the long run.

I'm thinking of getting a running belt and some gels to test out before race day, but I'm not sure if that's excessive?

409.2

BusterTheBulldog · 02/05/2018 17:03

How exciting ladylance! If you do, I would get both asap-I tried 4 running belts before finding one that worked for me (flipbelt and bottle), I also had to try a fair few gels as some gave me a dodgy tum!

Running for 60 mins straight is a fantastic achievement justgettingstarted! You’ll find you naturally get quicker / cover more ground the more you run too.

3 earlier, where I got drenched, I would have said I quite like running in the rain too, but not today!!

6 on mon, and 6.5 at run club last night. Joined faster group for first leg which I had forgotten was up hill, nearly killed me!

424.7

LadyLance · 02/05/2018 17:50

Buster I have heard that too- but I am also feeling like once I hit about 75 mins, I need something to keep my energy levels up. Maybe I will just pack a small bag of jelly babies or something!

Also, yes, well done on your progress Justgettingstarted It currently takes me 70-75 mins to run 10k, but I'm not too worried about speed. Just think how many people (even relatively fit people) can't run 10k or for an hour at all!

JustGettingStarted · 02/05/2018 19:22

Thanks for putting into perspective, LadyLance!

emummy · 02/05/2018 20:42

Nice easy run tonight in the sunshine, glad the rain has stopped.
LadyLance I usually need fuel for anything longer than 9 miles. I use clif shot bloks, which are like jelly cubes. I am not a fan of the texture of gels. I often run with a karrimor belt, mine has 2 small bottles on it. I do need to have water in them or else the belt rides up! Dh has a flip belt which he finds very comfy.
Good running Buster!
I think your 10k time is fine Just, and I'm sure it will come down gradually with time. Running that distance is a real achievement, the time is just detail

athingthateveryoneneeds · 03/05/2018 09:35

My speed is improving, much to my surprise. My app gave me a rabbit symbol after last night's run. I've only had tortoises up til now! :D Cracked the 10k mark as well.

Iamblossom · 04/05/2018 10:26

Gorgeous 10km run in country lanes past blossom and amazing houses - love the way I can indulge my property porn habit when I am running. Took 57 mins so slightly slower than usual?

448.5

emummy · 04/05/2018 12:30

Well done athing!
Sounds like a lovely run Iamblossom, I do the house thing too! There's a couple I am seriously in love with!
Ok run this morning, nice & sunny & warm but felt a bit tired. Got it done though so happy enough

RunningAddict · 04/05/2018 12:36

Been a while since I last posted! Had so much work on with finishing uni in June while trying to keep my head at work.

Got a new half marathon PB at the end of March, 1:51:23 which I was really happy with! My next one is in July so I may push for the sub 1:50.

Also tempted to sign up for the Chester Marathon in October, but very on the fence Grin

Hope anyone with running struggles gets past them soon and great to still see everyone enjoying it, especially now it’s sunny!

LadyLance · 04/05/2018 16:02

Thanks emummy I'll have a look at everything you've mentioned Smile

Well done athing

Sounds like a great run Iamblossom

That's an impressive PB RunningAddict Congrats.

8.8 miles today- I did feel knackered by the end though, but pleased I'm managing to keep pushing the distance up on my long runs!

Also, we haven't restarted the running total for May! I make us on 63.5 already!
