A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

yes I have my last of 6 Yoga 121s booked for Friday - will have to book some more!

JustGettingStarted · 09/05/2018 15:15

The sort of weight training I meant was more along the lines of squats, deadlifts and rows. Full body stuff.

Iamblossom · 09/05/2018 18:04

Thankyou. My husband is really into it so I will get him to plan me a routine.

applelolly · 09/05/2018 18:10

evening all
thanks for the welcomes.
Managed to do 5 miles this evening.\ sorry, sill question - do I add that onto the number in bold on posts?
Was much cooler than on Sunday thankfully! Am hoping for a short 3 miles tomorrow night. Then body attack on Friday and long run Sat with Sunday as a rest day.
Well done to all those out running today.Grin

JustGettingStarted · 09/05/2018 20:54

I don't understand the number thing, either!

I ran for 60 minutes and managed to do 8km. I ran faster for the 8th k because I wanted to get that even number lol. I was surprised that after 54 minutes of running, I was able to push myself to the pace I do 5k parkrun. I couldn't have sustained it much longer, but I was able to do it.

I'm looking forward to finishing this week and the B210K program, because then I can do things like intervals, etc. I'd like to build up my ability to sustain a faster pace.

emummy · 10/05/2018 07:47

The number in bold is the cumulative total of miles run that month, just add your miles on. Sorry it's miles not km Just!

JustGettingStarted · 10/05/2018 09:04

OK then! My 5 miles plus the 169.8 recorded by blossom =

174.8

emummy · 10/05/2018 11:44

Bit of a stop start run this morning, dog wasn't in the mood until we got to her favourite track under the trees. Think I might run alone tomorrow!

182.1

JustGettingStarted · 10/05/2018 13:32

Runkeeper acted up today. Gps map looked wonky (sending me through back gardens) and about 10 minutes sort of went missing and it never announced that my 1 hour interval was over (I looked at my phone because I thought it had been too long). I am pretty sure that I went 8km again. I made a point of pressing myself at several intervals.

applelolly · 10/05/2018 19:06

Thanks for the number explanation. I've postponed tonight's run due to niggling hip and lower back pain since after yesterday's run. I also need to work on strengthening my core muscles!
Adding my 5 miles from last night onto total
192

nbee84 · 10/05/2018 21:04

Hip pain has eased off. Have done 2 body pump classes and a body conditioning class this week with no problems. Looking forward to a run tomorrow morning (never thought I'd say that Grin) and will keep to a 5k and see how I go.

Adding my May total of 11 miles so...

athingthateveryoneneeds · 10/05/2018 21:12

Hated going running last night in the wind and rain, but I did it! Time to upgrade my shoes, though. I'm definitely getting foot aches that I never got before.

nbee84 · 11/05/2018 10:12

Really disappointed this morning Sad After 1k i was aware of my hip. At 3k I felt a slight twang - enough to make me say ouch out loud. So I walked home from there and currently have an ice pack on my hip.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 11/05/2018 10:49

Ouch, nbee84. Rest up as much as you can.

I wore my new running shoes this morning for a quick 3k. Pb on speed as well - was like running on pillows!!

211.2

emummy · 11/05/2018 11:48

Sorry your hip is being a problem nbee. Are you able to get to a physio for some advice?
Congrats on the new shoes and the speed athing! New shoes are lovely.
Grumpy slow run this morning. Did fast 2 miles with the school running club and wasn't in the mood for my own run! Nice sunny day though, and now I can drink coffee and relax.

Iamblossom · 11/05/2018 14:49

Back still really stiff so swam a mile this morning instead of running.

Am I allowed to add it to the running total? Grin

applelolly · 12/05/2018 13:12

morning all
nbee sorry to hear about your hip. How is it today?
athing glad you like your new shoes. What have you got? I've or
just ordered some new ones which should come tomorrow.
lamb well done on your swimming. I'm rubbish at swimming!

managed 7 miles this morning. My longest run yet since getting back into running in Jan. I am still really, really slow, though! It is hard because I am so much slower than I used to be and have to try to stop myself focusing on time too much!

226.2

Iamblossom · 12/05/2018 14:42

Wow 7 miles! How many km is that?

Iamblossom · 12/05/2018 14:45

11.3. I'm going to make that my next target distance.

Have walked the dog for an hour and done a 45 minute power walk at the gym this morning and back definitely feels better

nbee84 · 12/05/2018 15:16

Hip is quite sore - was very stiff when I got up this morning but has eased through the day. Think I'll need to lay off the running for a fortnight or so - I really don't want to cause any sort of damage that limits my other activities too. Don't think Ill see a physio at this point - I'm pretty sure they'd just tell I'd done too much to soon and to take ibuprofen and rest it.

I've done a spin class no problem and also a circuit class where the only exercises I need to modify were plank hip rolls and plank hip dips.

Well done on your 7 miles lamb. That's a distance to be proud of Smile

JustGettingStarted · 12/05/2018 15:30

I initially thought that I hadn't improved my home parkrun time, but I had forgotten exactly what that time was. I improved it by a minute.

Still slower than the pb I got on a flat course three weeks ago. It's going to be a while before I break that one. The course really makes a difference.

Iamblossom · 12/05/2018 16:16

I didn't do 7 miles apple did!!

nbee84 · 12/05/2018 17:01

Whoops! Sorry lamb

Well done Apple Grin

applelolly · 12/05/2018 17:10

thanks! Managing to do last week's 10K in the heat helped boost my confidence and inspired me to gradually build up my distance. Plan to stick to 7 miles for long run for a couple of weeks, then increase to 7.5 then 8. I have another 10k (6.4miles) booked for 10th if June so I think it will help to have done a couple of longer runs by then.
nbee sometimes rest is the only way. At least you can do other stuff still.
lamb well done on dog and power walking
just well done at parkrun

I am pleased to report I have had no recurrence of my hip/back pain I got on Weds, despite my long run today. I did run in different running shoes and think that may be key.
I have even managed a couple of hours gardening this afternoon!
Now just rewarding myself with a small beer in the garden LOL

Johnnycomelately1 · 13/05/2018 07:46

nbee Is it like a pain in the hip socket, directly behind the hip bone that's worse on foot strike? If so, I get this and it's due to weak and tight glutes (yes, it's possible for them to be both- who knew?). I have to foam roll and pigeon stretch/ 90-90 the shit out of my glutes at least twice a week for about 45 mins (I do it when I'm watching TV or listening to the DC read) and that keeps it at bay.

Not much running since Wed as I had PT Thursday and then been away. However, I've scraped together 3.5km from a gym commute and 2km of intervals at Crossfit today which is approx 3 miles so I'll chuck it in the pot
