A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

Ugh I just had a really stupid moment and started a new thread because I thought 20 was the page limit not 40, anyway, I've reported it and asked for it to be deleted, so sorry for tagging everyone in!

Well done on your park run limesoda. One day, I will actually get to one! I agree, getting the motivation to go running can be really tricky, and sitting down is fatal!

Anyway, much better run for me today! 5.4 miles, didn't push myself on speed at all but feeling good about running again, and getting really close to my April target!

3 miles today, outside, found a new route that doesn't have many steep hills (except the unavoidable one at the end!) So made pretty good time. The heat was not fun though!

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Still sticking to the treadmills atm. Really hoping to get outside soon but no improvement in the knee. Rest doesn’t help so I’ve decided to stay on a treadmill and work more on speed than distance. I desperately need to get some new trainers but am actually a bit nervous to change has anyone else found this, how did you get over it and actually take the plunge.
Another 17.7 for me

Glad you noticed that LadyLance, I was trying to work out a diplomatic way to say we didn't need a new thread yet! Good running, a non- hilly route sounds good!
Go for it with the trainers sayhello! New shoes are so nice... Saying that, I have been in the same type of trainers for 5 years now, although my trail shoes are different. I tried on a new make last month int the shop, but they just weren't as comfy!
Nice easy paced run tonight. I wasn't sure how it would go as I am really struggling with poor sleep at the moment, but it was lovely!

I think my brain stopped working for a minute emummy! You didn't need to be diplomatic! Glad you had a good run!

sayhello I have heard that treadmills can be just as bad for some injuries as people are often more "bouncy" on them, so although it's a softer surface, there's a different kind of stress. Obviously don't go against medical advice, but if you want to run outside maybe give it a try? Hope things get better soon!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 27/04/2018 08:38

I think I feel ready to join this thread. :) I'm working towards cracking 10k and last night managed 8.8! How do I add my distance - is it in miles?

emummy · 27/04/2018 10:03

Welcome athibg! Yes, the numbers in bold are the thread total in miles, just add yours on as you go. Good luck with the 10k!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 27/04/2018 10:05

Thank you!

morning all.

Did my 10km on the treadmill this morning as don't like getting my running trainers muddy Grin

Does anyone else run slower on that though than outside? I did 10.23 km in an hour and 3 minutes but I can do 10km in 55mins outside, sometimes less! That seems like a big difference to me!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 27/04/2018 10:38

Haha, I aspire to that speed! I'm currently at 8k/h.

Euphrasia · 27/04/2018 10:45

Hi all, can I join in? I'm just getting back to running after a baby. She's nine months now but I had to wait because of treatment for a mild prolapse (sorry, tmi!) Anyway, looking forward to getting back.

Iamblossom · 27/04/2018 11:25

I find it totally addictive. I want to run again now even though I physically couldn't as am knackered.

I have to restrict my long runs to twice a week or I get injured and I have to really really stretch out after or my back starts to ache.

But running gives me endorphins that no other exercise does - and I swim and use the cross trainer and have done for years.

I find myself driving places thinking "this would be a good road to run on" - hilarious that I discover this at 43 Grin

athingthateveryoneneeds · 27/04/2018 11:29

I am often tempted to run twice a day. Lunacy. But I'm glad I like it so much.

Euphrasia · 27/04/2018 12:08

I'm finding it really hard to build up slowly! I feel I could go faster but I know I'd be kicking myself if it went wrong. I'm itching to get going.

LadyLance · 27/04/2018 15:20

Welcome Euphrasia and athing

Iamblossom I do run more slowly on a treadmill BUT that's often a good thing as I'm rubbish at pacing myself (getting better). So, I set myself a pace I know I can manage to keep up for the time/distance I want to run. Anyway, your 10k speed seems pretty impressive to me, my 10k speed on the treadmill is about 75 mins!

Longer slower run today on the treadmill, 7.6 miles in 90 mins. This means I've exceeded my target of running 50 miles in April!

Iamblossom · 27/04/2018 17:03

Gosh thanks athing and lady it's always hard to know when you run on your own!!

mayathebee · 27/04/2018 21:14

Hi all, I went to new running group on Wednesday. It's called Fitmums but there was quite a mix of people - male and female and all ages and speeds. I really enjoyed it and I'm planning on going again next week. It turned out this week was a grass track session looking at form rather than their usual session. It was really interesting and made me think about moving on from what they call the marathon shuffle (but I call the beginners shuffle).

I went for a run today and tried to put it into practice. The good news is I knocked almost a minute off my 5k time but it was too fast for me - I almost collapsed after 5k and could have cried when I realised I still had to run 3k home. I walked for a minute then managed to jog home but I need to learn to pace myself!

No idea how far I ran on Wed so just the 5 miles from tonight for me.

339.1

mayathebee · 27/04/2018 21:15

Sorry, that was a bit of a ramble Blush

LadyLance · 27/04/2018 21:36

Iamblossom I totally agree, it's really hard to know where you sit compared to other runners! I sort of know I'm pretty slow though! I think I could do 10k a little faster if I was really pushing myself, but I only ever really try to push myself on "short" runs (to me that's 5k or less).

Mayathebee I always find it interesting to read what everyone's up to, I don't think you should worry about rambling. I definitely run with a [half] marathon shuffle!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 27/04/2018 21:51

I would love advice on how to improve my form. I need to join my local running club.

emummy · 28/04/2018 10:15

Welcome Euphrasia and anyone else new that I have missed!
Steady run this morning. Having a lot of sleep problems which combined with children's' appointments this week to throw off my usual running routine. Today's run should have had a 6 mile tempo section in it but I realised early that my legs were too tired so cut that to 3 miles, and ran the rest steady. Tomorrow's long run is going to be tough I think!
I had a biomechanics assessment by a running physi a few months back to look for weaknesses and assess my form. It was really interesting! He filmed me running on a treadmill and I have been told to lift my heels higher, which means I'm less likely to over stride. I think it's helping; I'm not really trying to be faster, just stronger.

348.

JustGettingStarted · 28/04/2018 13:02

I'm working on a bridge to 10k 3x a week, then doing parkrun. I'm irked that my weekly total distance is .5 kilometres less than last week. The program is based on time rather than distance so I have obviously run slower this week. I'm almost tempted to go run for 20 minutes or so later just to get my milage up. Am I being silly?

emummy · 28/04/2018 15:03

It's tempting isn't it JustGettingStarted! I wouldn't though, a programme like that is based more on effort than distance. So this week that was were you got to with the effort you could give. Let it go! Distance isn't everything (says the woman who ran up & down her street twice this morning to get to a round number on her watch!).

LadyLance · 28/04/2018 17:58

I would be tempted JustGettingStarted but it's also natural to run more slowly as you build the time/distance up (I think) I definitely run more slowly if I am running for 90 minutes than if I am running for 45 minutes. I've never managed a negative split in a training run!

I like the idea of a biomechanics assessment emummy where did you get that done?

emummy · 28/04/2018 19:15

One of the physio practices near me has started a running clinic. It was really good, a chance to be a geek about running for an hour!
