A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

379 3 muddy, soggy trail miles from me! I'm out in the countryside for the weekend!

stegosauruslady · 30/03/2018 17:42

Bustertbebulldog I'm terrible for tense arms! I try to shake them out every mile or so, which helps a bit.

My new balance shorts had their first outing today, I may be a convert to super short shorts for running!

MyBlackCat · 30/03/2018 20:11

After 4 long months plagued my injury I am slowly making my return to running. I've got to build up very slowly and will be run/walking for a while yet. Tomorrow I progress to 1 min walking 4 min running as I attempt parkrun. Make the most of your running, it's not fun being on the side lines.

A few miles over the last two weeks to add...

Ah no need for thanks, I wasnon the first thread and others kind of fell away so I just carried on. Great to get support and tips and be able to talk about trainers!!!

I’ve got a problem with my heel so I’ve done 8 miles so far this week. Got a 10k with Little dog and mad dog on the beach tomorrow in the wind and rain, can’t say I’m looking forward to it!

Does anyone have any races coming up?

I'm not racing until July now, when I have another half, then I might do an ultra in August and I have the Great North Run in September!

emummy · 31/03/2018 11:07

I have a 10k in 3 weeks, a half in early June and a marathon in July! Nothing planned or after that, I feel I don't know what I'll feel like after the marathon so will wait and decide. Only done one run this week thanks to a stinking cold, hoping to go out tomorrow morning.
MyBlackCat so glad you can start running again, even just a tiny bit. Fingers crossed that your recovery continues smoothly.
Hope you have fun in the lovely weather cinnamon!

BusterTheBulldog · 31/03/2018 18:40

I’ve got a half a week tomorrow, a 20 mile obstacle race in May, a spartan in July and the great north run in sept also. I have a couple of half’s planned after that but they seem a long away off!!

Hats off emummy, I just don’t think I’ve got a marathon in me! Have you done one before?

Ironmanrocks · 31/03/2018 23:47

I haven't read all of the thread, but I was wondering if I can join you? I am fairly new to running - kind of started last year with a friend and got up to 5k - did race for life and struggled etc - but I am always SO SLOW. I feel quite embarrassed by it, so have started again recently in order to get better by he summer. I started mid Jan, running once a week in the good weather and have run mostly twice a week maybe for 4 weeks now and an amazing runner friend has started to encourage me to increase my distance. The first week I did 4.1 miles, 2nd 4.5 miles 3rd 5 miles and today I ran a 10k! I literally cannot believe it! And I've loved it!!!

emummy · 01/04/2018 08:43

Welcome ironman, sounds like your running is going really well. Hope you carry on enjoying it.
Buster I think if you can do a 20 mile obstacle race you could do a marathon! Spartan races sound way too hard! I did London last year as my first marathon, so Orkney is going to be a very different experience. Am really looking forward to it.
Back running this morning, but slower thanks to the remains of the cold. Felt lovely to be out and it is a beautiful sunny morning here. Ran along country roads with snowy mountains in the distance, very nice! Will repeat this week's training plan for next week as I missed so much. Feeling much better now!

Had a bit of time off as I overdid things last week and pulled my calf :( it's feeling pretty recovered so I went out for 3 miles in the wind and the drizzle today. Walked the steepest hill but otherwise felt pretty good :) back to the gym tomorrow and hoping to get things back on track.

@stegosauruslady I'm doing a half in May, my first ever race Shock and signed up to race at your pace to do 50 miles in April. I did over 50 miles in March so hopefully I'll manage it again this month.

Good luck to all with races coming up and well done to everyone running!

Lots of races! I love racing, I always find someone to chat to. I'm considering signing up to become a Race Angel.

No run today for me as I'm prepping for a treat tomorrow, I'm planning a day of forest trail running all by myself. I've mapped a lovely five mile route and I'll do four laps, probably stopping to eat a picnic lunch at some point too! Can't wait!

Then we are going to climb Snowdon on Saturday, although DP says I can't run it and have to stay with him!

Ironmanrocks · 02/04/2018 13:17

My goodness you all sound so amazing. I was proud to get to 4 then 5 miles and you are going to do 4 or 5 laps of a 5 mile route!! Shock To be fair I never EVER thought Id get to 10k and did it fairly easily considering so maybe one day Ill be as good as you!! Grin
Can I ask - has it helped any of you lose weight? I can't imagine my body changing massively - always had chunky thighs and a big bum, but I'm not huge...

Ironmanrocks · 02/04/2018 13:18

ps whats a race angel???

LadyLance · 02/04/2018 14:10

Those sound like some lovely plans stegosauruslady I'm off to Wales next weekend but for some horse-riding rather than running. Have a great time!

Ironman I'm definitely not that impressive- although I'm building up the miles aiming for my half marathon I'm definitely only at the stage where I'm running a 5 mile loop once! 10k is great progress- I bet you didn't think you'd be able to do that this time last year!

I've definitely noticed muscle changes since I started running seriously, but I've also changed an active job for one that's more sedentary, so I've put on 5lb since January :( I think sadly weightloss is much more down to diet than exercise unless you're talking massive changes in activity- When I started my old job moving from an office job to one where I was on my feet and moving most of the time (and outside) I lost over a stone, and I could eat what I wanted to, BUT that was a huge change in my activity levels.

I also find that going to the gym etc makes me hungry, so I eat more to compensate! So, I think you will see changes to your body, but not necessarily weightloss unless you are making some conscious effort with your diet.

stegosauruslady · 02/04/2018 14:21

ironman I couldn't run for five minutes this time last year! It doesn't help me to lose weight, but since I started maintaining (I lost 3.5 stone last year) it really really helps me to keep my weight where I want it to stay.

In terms of body changes due to running, my posture is now a million times better and my legs are like chiseled granite. Shame about the mum tum!

Ironmanrocks · 02/04/2018 14:40

Thanks all, it is as I suspected - last week I just wanted to stuff my face with anything I was so hungry - Im feeling more in control this week - and less prone to eating the wrong foods. Im veggie, and last week I craved meat!!! I figure if I stick to what I as eating roughly, and then run twice a week or more, I should be OK. I don't have lots to lose, just need to be fit and toned. I want thighs of granite like stegosaurus!!! Grin

LadyLance · 02/04/2018 15:03

ironman honestly you will notice huge changes to your thighs- mine are the most toned they have ever been even though that's where I carry most of my body fat and I've ridden horses since I was pretty young. Also I have calf muscles that I can actually physically tense!

BusterTheBulldog · 02/04/2018 15:14

Welcome ironman! When I really concentrate on running I definitkey see the difference in my legs. Unfortunately I have been ‘blessed’ with chunky thighs and a big bum and they always remain out of proportion but hey ho!

Thanks emummy I actually find the obstacle races a lot easier than just straight running, lots of chances to stop and rest!

Jealous of those of to Wales-I love it there! Are you taking your own horse ladylance? I would love to do that but I’m a bit of a wimp!

3 and a 4 from me, will do club run tomorrow and then no more running until half on Sun I don’t think.

Buster I'm not taking my own, but I'm going to ride at a stables with some lovely Welsh ponies which I'm quite excited about. I did see a place with guided trail rides that you could take your own horse on, which looked amazing- something for the future when I have my own transport!

stegosauruslady · 02/04/2018 21:38

Ok, I totally lied. Ran three miles because DP wanted me to pace him.

mayathebee · 03/04/2018 10:52

Grrr I keep falling off the thread and off the running wagon. I've been busy at work and running drops off the bottom of my to-do list. Despite knowing how much better I feel when I'm running I find it hard to stick with it. I've signed up for some races this month to help me. I did the Elvington Flyer on Sunday (5 miles) and have 2 5ks later in the month. I'm on Easter hols just now so I have no excuse not to train. I get a 5k pb during Sunday's run - 36:40 - so I'm setting myself the challenge of getting under 35 minutes in one of the 5ks.
